Ray Rhamey - Editor

Ashland, Oregon, USA

Content editor and writing coach with a long career of making words work, and an editorial focus enhanced by authoring my own novels.

Overview

I've been working with words and images during a long career in advertising, editing book-length fiction, video scripting and editing, and writing novels. Publishing my novels has also led to designing book covers and interiors for Indie authors and small publishing companies.

Details on my editing services are at crrreative.com. My books, including novels and "Mastering the Craft of Compelling Storytelling," are at rayrhamey.com

I also blog on the craft of writing at Flogging the Quill, floggingthequill.com, and am a regular monthly contributor at the Writer Unboxed blog, writerunboxed.com (the Flog a Pro feature). On my blog I invite writers to submit their work for a "will I turn the page" critique by me and my readers.

Work experience

Director of Video Services and Editor

Washington State University

February, 2005 – April, 2011 (about 6 years)

Created a video production unit at the university, managing employees, creating scripts, and supervising production and editing of award-winning promotional videos. Was also the content editor for the university's main website for two of those years.

Freelance editor

Flogging the Quill LLC

January, 2003 – Present (almost 14 years)

I've edited dozens of works of book-length fiction for writers across the globe those years. That I also write novels creates an additional level of insight into the strengths and shortcomings of a client's manuscript. As a creative, I have restructured novels and suggested new endings. My focus is on three things: maintaining and strengthening a writer's voice, coaching on writing best practices, and making the story as compelling a page-turner as possible. While my focus is on content and my edits include extensive line editing and teaching. I'm a pretty good copyeditor as well and, if there's "flab" in a manuscript, I'll guide you in trimming it. Please visit my website for more information, testimonials, fees, etc.

Copywriter to Creative Director

A number of advertising agencies, including Leo Burnett, D'Arcy

June, 1976 – February, 2005 (over 28 years)

Started as a copywriter and grew to be the creative director, senior VP and director of a medium-sized Chicago ad agency. Along the way I held writing and creative director positions at major agencies including Leo Burnett and D'Arcy. I wrote and produced more than 70 television commercials and countless ads. Creating ads and supervising writers and art directors honed my skills at making every word--and choice of word--have an effect. Those writing and editing skills, along with coaching writers to improve their copy, inform the skill set I bring to editing today.
