RECOVERING AFTER A HOSPITAL STAY

Everyone who has been admitted to a hospital recovers at his or her own pace. Most people say they felt physically weak when they left the hospital. How long someone takes to recover after a hospital stay depends on many things, including their age, previous health, how ill they were and how long they stayed there. Sometimes complete recovery can take up to several years. Here, Mark Berger Chicago, founder and Chief Executive Officer at nursing and rehab center Villa Healthcare, talks about getting the right physical recovery after leaving the hospital.
Coming home after a hospital stay may feel like crossing a finish line, but the race isn’t over just yet. In the first few days and weeks after being released from the hospital, people often found that even the slightest activity wore them out. Most patients have stated feeling weak and immobile when they first got home. That means normal daily activities such as showering, washing, walking, cooking and cleaning were often impossible. Many found climbing up and down the stairs too difficult and exhausting.

There maybe was a time when bed rest was considered the best way to recover, but today, Mark Berger Chicago explains, it has become clear that gradually increasing exercise is imperative for regaining strength. Some physical activity, such as short walks or spins on a stationary bike, can help you get back to your usual self. Based on your doctor’s direction, try to move a little a day or two after you come home, gradually increasing your daily activity. Also, make sure to watch your diet during recovery and choose foods that will provide needed proteins and nutrients for healing.

Checking into a hospital for a procedure or following a medical event can be a stressful experience. Not only are there medical concerns, but as Villa's Healthcare CEO Mark Berger Chicago reports, physical and mental decline are common side effects of a significant hospital stay. Chances are that a hospital stay has completely messed up your sleep schedule. Resuming a normal sleeping routine will help you heal faster and feel better. Get back on your usual schedule as best as you can, allowing yourself some downtime to rest.

Post-Acute and Long-Term Care

When a person is discharged from the hospital following an illness or injury, although the patient is no longer in need of hospital services, they do still require medical care. Under the leadership of Mark Berger Chicago, Villa Healthcare, a leading provider of post-hospital care, rehabilitation, skilled nursing, and long-term care services, offers post-acute care services to bridge the gap between hospital and home.

Villa Healthcare owns and manages twenty-two Short Term Rehabilitation and Nursing Centers throughout the Midwest. Mark Berger Chicago has decades of experience in nursing facility ownership and management. His company goes beyond simply providing resident-focused care, and its goal is “to make people better” - staff and residents, and to improve their lives.

A post-acute and long term care physician is a primary care provider interested in providing care for post-hospital discharge skilled nursing home patients as well as long term patients. They work with other physicians, as well as nurse practitioners, to provide seamless care in transitioning patients from hospital to nursing facility, as well as nursing facility to home/assisted living.

Mark Berger Chicago believes it is important to distinguish between traditional long-term care, such as assisted living, and long-term acute care. In most cases, traditional long-term care focuses on patient comfort, medication management, and assistance in daily living, while post-acute care, on the other hand, involves medication management and help with performing tasks such as bathing and dressing. However, Mr. Berger adds, it also includes skilled nursing care by medical professionals and treatment plans designed to help patients recover, rehabilitate, and restore functioning.

Villa Healthcare provides a home-away-from-home for patients of all ages who are transitioning out of the hospital but who still require specialized care following an illness or injury. The company’s team of compassionate and highly qualified medical professionals creates a treatment plan designed to help each patient achieve their recovery goals and live their best lives.
