I'm a freelance illustrator specialising in character-based narrative illustration and book covers for children's books, young teen fiction and lifestyle non-fiction.
My work focuses on using bold tonal colour palettes, as well as a strong sense of character and decorative detailing. I primarily illustrate using ink linework with digital colouring, but also often work using watercolours or purely digital methods.
I have worked on book covers for new editions of 'Peter Pan' and 'What Katy Did' with Egmont Publishing, chapter illustrations for a teen non-fiction anxiety handbook with Jessica Kingsley Publishing, interior illustrations for University textbooks, comics for well-known publishers like IDW, as well as fully illustrating six published picture books with a selection of publishers worldwide.
I have extensive experience in working with clients and publishers, and enjoy working to a brief! You'll usually find me drawing in my sketchbook, problem-solving an exciting new project or caught up in reading a good book.
I am an award-winning illustrator creating books, book covers, advertising, graphic novels and editorial illustration from a cosy studio in North West England.
I work with a large portfolio of clients within both publishing and commercial sectors. I have exhibited internationally and in my seven years of freelance experience I've built a strong reputation for my illustration work focused on colour, character and suggested narrative.
My work with clients such as Tesco, Egmont Publishing, JKP Publishing, Octopus Group Publishing, Broadview Press, and IDW Publishing, as well as my illustration for six picture books, has seen features in the likes of The Guardian, Design Week and Creative Review; and is stocked in The Victoria and Albert museum, Waterstones and Selfridges.
I'm a passionate ambassador for freelancing and the creative industries, which led to my award of 'IPSE Freelancer of the Year' in 2016. Since then I have featured in numerous national media campaigns and conference panels talking about my work and the issues freelancers face.
On my creative industries blog I have worked with companies like Clarks, Cath Kidston, Laura Ashley, Fat Face, DFS and Cass Art to produce engaging creative projects and posts - with my 'What Emmeline Wore In October' project resulting in over 100,000 views per month.
I love working with clients on a huge range of topics - from anxiety to Ancient Egypt! I really enjoy the problem-solving aspect of design, and the joy my clients express when they see the finished product!
