Overview

With a Master's degree in English Literature and over 16 years of experience providing clear, honest, and constructive feedback, I specialize in developmental editing of young adult, new adult, and adult novels. I partner with my clients, taking the time to understand their stories deeply and give them the right level of feedback for where they are in the writing process. To ensure fairness, I structure my rates in alignment with the Editorial Freelancers Association's rate guide.

Since I began freelance editing full-time in 2012, I've had the honor of working with authors from all over the world writing in English in a wide variety of genres:science fiction, fantasy, urban fantasy, science fantasy, romance (contemporary, paranormal, fantasy, LGBTQ+), women's fiction, suspense, fabulism, contemporary, historical, surrealism, absurdism, mystery (historical, noir, and academic), dystopian, and literary speculative fiction. After working with me, my clients have been offered agent representation, won writing awards, been published by small presses, and earned 4+ star ratings on their self-published work.

I'm particularly passionate about character-driven narratives that explore important questions about being human in ways that are fresh, accessible, deeply connecting, and entertaining, and I gravitate toward work that's a little off-center from the mainstream, such as cross-genre work and work that challenges societal norms and/or the conventions of a genre.

In previous lives I’ve been an adjunct instructor of college writing and literature, an instructional assessment specialist in higher ed, a news writer, a freelance travel and culture writer, and a teacher of English as a Foreign Language. In the last few years I've served as an editor in the Pitch to Publication Twitter contest and as faculty at the inaugural
The Work Conference
in New York City; co-founded
Revise & Resub
(#RevPit) for querying authors; created the
ShoreIndie
Contest for emerging indie authors; co-edited
Letters from the Void
, an anthology of floating-inspired prose and poetry for Coincidence Control Publishing; taught genre fiction writing at the Show:Tell Workshop for Teen Writers and Artists; was featured in Episode #24 of the
Write Through the Roof
podcast, hosted by Madeleine D'Este; and attended the
Martha's Vineyard Institute of Creative Writing
.

Currently, I am a RevPit Editor, co-host of the
Novel Approaches podcast
with r.r. campbell, and co-host of a quarterly reading series in Portland, Oregon called Hodgepodge. I'm a member of the
Editorial Freelancers Association
(EFA),
Willamette Writers
, and the
Association for Writers and Writing Programs
(AWP), and I'm working on my first nonfiction book, a guide to structuring a novel.
