Matthew Maaskant – Designer

Experienced designer with a joy for bringing a vision to life. Specializing in book covers, ebooks, fixed layout epubs, and book trailers.

Overview

GRAPHIC DESIGN
With an eye for color that began with photography, I started out working as a scanning technician for the stock photography company Masterfile. After several years I transitioned to the marketing department of the same company and by doing so started a 20 year career in graphic design that continues to this day. My early experience in stock photography and graphic design have both led me to specialize in book cover design, with freelance clients such as Dundurn Press in Toronto.

WEB & EPUB
I've also worked in graphic design for web, starting with the marketing department of Masterfile and continuing with the production of websites, as well as epub and fixed layout epubs. One recent client is Centennial College in Toronto, for whom I produced the epub textbook "Our Stories - First Peoples in Canada."

PHOTOGRAPHY & BOOK TRAILERS
Through the years my involvement in professional photography has always continued, one recent client beingThompson Educational Publishing in Toronto who needed photos for a Physical Education Textbook.
I've also worked as a freelance videographer, most recently shooting and directing lyric videos - which are music videos that contain animated typography (examples available on request). This is a type of work that perfectly combines my love of typography & graphic design with the love of color and video, a skill set I would like to apply to the relatively new niche of book trailers.

Work experience

Self-employed

Jun, 2008 — Feb, 2010 (over 1 year)

A very technically precise job, my duties were to open complex Quark Express documents and update the text to reflect new changes. The job required the ability to adapt as the new changes required without disturbing the existing layout of the document.

Self-employed

Jun, 2008 — Present

In 2016-2017 I did 9 book covers (all freelance) for Dundurn Press based in Toronto, although as a lifelong musician I have extensive experience with marketing materials for musicians (one-sheets, EPKs, posters, vinyl and CD packaging) One regular client is Canadian record label Coax Records (

Masterfile

Oct, 1997 — Jun, 2007 (over 9 years)

My employment at Masterfile Corporation, a stock photography company, included 3 years as a scanning technician doing color correction, 2 years doing workflow automation and programming scripts for image processing in applescript, and 5 years in the marketing department creating marketing materials (web & print) as well as front end design of the website.

Huron Board Of Education

Jun, 1996 — Aug, 1997 (about 1 year)

After being hired out of a high school multimedia course, I was part of a team that made a CD-ROM 'The Joke's Over.' Dealing with peer to peer sexual harassment in Ontario's secondary schools it was commissioned by the Ministry of Education and distributed to high schools across Ontario.

After completing 'The Joke's Over' I was sent to another local high school to train five student volunteers and one teacher while creating the educational CD-ROM 'Canada in a North American Perspective'.
