Overview
I'm a professionally trained book editor with eight years of experience providing writer support, notably with independent authors, visual storytellers, and nonnative English speakers. An examination evaluation by Editors Canada describes me as “a brilliant editor” with “a remarkably astute editorial eye.” My heart's content is to empower writers to get the very best of their work off the ground.
My first experience in the world of publishing was to sift through a mountainous slush pile of stories—two years’ worth of them. It was in the act of intensive critical reading that I pulled back the curtain on what makes a story carry emotional resonance—or conversely, what causes a reader’s interest to droop. Premise, plot structure, pacing, character arcs, style, reader expectations: line up these elements above all and people will swoon.
And when some of those elements are shaky? There’s hope! Sometimes, all that’s needed is a close reader who understands the story you want to tell and identifies what’s needed to meet readers on the page.
I am one of those close readers, and I’m good at what I do because I care—about the protagonist’s plight and your unique voice as a writer, about producing work that makes readers give a darn. When I help an aspiring author achieve so momentous a task as publishing a book that people actually want to read, I’m a happy camper.
