Emma Baird

Emma Baird – Editor

Writer, reader, editor - let me help you make your words shine.

Overview

I'm a copywriter by trade, and I write books in my spare time. I have seven years' experience of writing and editing in contract publishing, including the productions of publications that won Scottish Communications in the Business awards.

I've edited plenty of self-help books (including Bill Calhoun's Can't...Can! How You CAN Get Motivated in Minutes) and fiction whilst I was part of a writers' co-operative, where I wrote and edited books on behalf of other writers. I love making text flow and working with writers to produce the best possible version of their work. I'm an author myself, and my published books include Katie and the Deelans, The Girl Who Swapped and The Diabetes Diet, which I co-wrote with a doctor.

I'm a prolific reader, and these days I read with an eye to learning. What makes a story flow and how do you structure your book to make the reader keep turning the pages? Flow and structure is challenging, so why not let me help you make sure your words are dynamic enough to spark and keep attention?

Work experience

Comely Bank Publishing

Jan, 2015 — Jan, 2017 (about 2 years)

At Comely Bank Publishing (a co-operative publishing organisation) I advised on the suitability of submissions for publication to CBP. I added appropriate content to the CBP website, managed its social media platforms, wrote and distributed the newsletter, and suggested and recommended new directions for CBP. In addition, I provided a manuscripts advisory service for new authors, and I edited and proof-read CBP submissions.

Self-employed

Apr, 2013 — Present

I have more than 20 years of experience working in communication roles. My career so far has covered journalism, public relations, contract publishing, PR management and freelance writing. The skills I have include excellent time management and organisational abilities, prize-winning writing and editorial capability.
I worked for seven years in contract publishing, where I wrote, edited and proofread newsletters, magazines and websites for big corporates, including several health boards and non-profits. I prepared unique style guides for clients so that I could ensure my writing and proofreading reflected their individual writing requirements.
I have offered feedback on books for many people, and I am keen to help others improve their writing. If you have valuable information to share, it’s vital that what you write conveys what you want to say. I have also published two novels myself, including one romance/comedy, and a self-help book on diabetes and diet.
