How to Play Squash

The rules of squash are fairly simple. There are many variations, but the most common form is played on a squash court divided by a short net.

The game begins with players taking turns hitting the ball against the front wall. The player who can't return the ball over the net and onto the front wall (either because it bounced off or they missed) is then out of the game.
Each player has three chances to hit the ball before their opponent wins a point and gets another chance to play.
If your racquet touches any part of your body or clothing during your swing, you lose one point (known as 'faulting'). If you lose all points, you're disqualified from playing and your opponent wins!

Getting Started

Squash is a competitive, racket-sport that's played on a four-walled court. A game is comprised of individual points, and the first person to win 11 points wins the game. Players use a small, hollow rubber ball and hit it against the front wall so that it bounces off and hits the back wall before reaching the front wall again.
The first thing you'll need to do is find an open squash club near you. Clubs usually have both private and public courts available for rent, so you can try out the sport before committing to joining. Once you join a club, you'll be able to play as many matches as you want!

It's also important to pick up your appropriate equipment before playing squash for the first time. You'll need a racquet that feels comfortable in your hand and shoes that offer stability on slippery surfaces. After that, all you need is a court surface with a good amount of space—you can even create your own court at home with some PVC pipe!

Picking Up the Ball and Moving Around the Court

Squash is played by hitting the ball so that it bounces back off the front wall. But how do you pick up the ball?
It's actually not as complicated as it seems. The server hits the ball so that it bounces off the front wall and comes back to them. When they hit it, they must use their non-racquet hand to push the ball into an open space on the court. If they are unable to push the ball into an open space, then they can hit it again to bounce it off of another wall.

The player who has just received a shot then goes onto serve. This goes on until one player reaches eleven points, at which point they win a game.

Setting up for a Shot and Basic Strokes

An important part of squash is having the right equipment. You can find squash racquets for sale at many sporting goods stores, but it's best to try them out first before purchasing. The racquet should be comfortable and easy to handle, but also provide enough power to hit the ball hard.

Next, you'll need a suitable squash ball. Make sure that the ball is the appropriate size for your needs, as you don't want one that's too big or too small.

The final thing you'll need for playing squash are good squash shoes. Squash shoes are designed to grip the floor well so that you can move quickly around the court surface. The right sneakers will keep you stable on your feet and help prevent injury so you can play for longer periods of time!

The Equipment For Playing Squash

The first step in learning squash is picking out the necessary equipment. Luckily, all you really need for this sport is a racquet and a squash ball.

Squash racquets are usually made of wood, metal, or carbon fibers. The racquet materials vary by weight and stiffness, preventing any one material from dominating the game. It's recommended that beginners use a lighter racquet because it will be easier to control than heavier ones. For advanced players, they may want to experiment with different types of racquets to find the right feel for them.

Squash balls vary by size and can be either hollow or solid. A hollow ball generally has more bounce than a solid ball since it has less air inside it; however, some players prefer playing with solid balls because they're easier to control on shots like drop shots.

Choosing a Court Surface

When you're first starting out, it can be hard to figure out what kind of court surface to play on. Should you play on carpet or hardwood? Do you need a rubber mat? We'll walk you through the pros and cons of various surfaces and help you decide which one is best for you.

Carpet: Carpet is a good surface for those new to the game, as it allows players to slide. It's also more forgiving on your joints than other courts. Though there are some disadvantages: The ball will bounce higher off of carpet than other surfaces, so players need to adjust their swings accordingly.

Doors: If your goal is to play on a surface that is most like playing in an actual squash court, then doors may be a good option for you. Doors are typically made from wood and they have a springy feel that causes the ball to travel slower and bounce lower than it would off of a harder surface like concrete or hardwood. This type of surface can result in longer rallies with opponents as the ball doesn't always travel as fast as it might on another type of court.

What is squash?

Squash is a racquet sport, usually played indoors. A game of squash can be played in singles or doubles matches. The game is played by hitting the ball with the racquet so that it bounces off the front wall and back again. When the ball reaches the front wall, it is called a ‘shot’.

Squash may seem like an intimidating sport to try for the first time, but don't worry—we're here to guide you through everything you need to know about starting up. Squash player Marc Bistricer will teach you the rules of squash, how to pick your equipment, and what type of court surface to play on. You'll be playing like a pro in no time!

What is squash?

Marc Bistricer shares that squash is a racquet sport played by two people (singles) or four people (doubles). It is played by hitting the ball with a racquet so that it bounces off the front wall and back again. When the ball reaches the front wall, it is called a ‘shot’.

The game was originally called ‘squish’, but because there were so many different spellings of the word, the name changed to squash in 1926.

The Rules of Squash

In squash, a player has to hit the ball against the front wall and then back. The ball can bounce off any part of the front wall or side walls, but not off the back wall.

“You have to let your opponent win a rally sometimes because it's not fair if you constantly hit shots from one side,” says Marc Bistricer.

In squash, players have to wait for their opponents to finish hitting a shot before they can hit it themselves. This is called "let."

If you forget to let your opponent hit a shot and hit it instead, you're going to lose that point.
