Maylon Gardner - Editor

Kelowna, BC, Canada

You write it, I right it. While I diligently ensure proper grammar, I never sacrifice your intention or voice to do so! That ain't right! ;)

Overview

I am a creative editor who loves to make an author's intention truly shine in whatever medium he or she prefers. There's no better feeling than when your work helped someone achieve their literary goals. I stand by my slogan: "you write it, I right it" because every writer needs someone to be an unbiased reviewer of their words; however, this does not mean overriding something just because it's grammatically unsound. That just ain't right! The beauty of prose is its artistic flow, and if that means leaving in a dangling participle or run-on sentence, then that's exactly what I'm going to do.

Editing is not sanitizing! As an editor, you are being entrusted with your client's word-child. This is a major responsibility, as well as a privilege. Editors are responsible for buffing a book until the diamond comes out of the rough, but they have to remember that this means the book's personality (the author's intention and voice) needs to remain intact. My main goal as an editor is to give my authors the best version of their voice possible. I work towards that end by establishing excellent relations with my clients so that I better understand them as people and as writers.

Courtesy of my years as a personal trainer and gym manager, I know what it's like to work with a wide variety of people who are very insecure about themselves or their presentation to the world. I find this is similar to a new author, especially, who is unsure of how his or her book is going to be accepted by the public. Both groups of people need guidance and reassurance, and someone they can trust. I love being that person! I have worked with all manner of individuals from blue collar to white collar; struggling to affluent; athletic to artsy . . . and all the in-between! Everyone has an interesting story to be told, and when an author decides to tell it, the right editor can make it resonate with the most amount of people possible.

So that is my job. My job is to take your words and spruce them up so that you can impact the most number of people possible. And to do this with your best interests at heart. You will never feel overridden or not listened to when we work together because we are a team -- my success is your success, and I am the happiest when my clients feel they have been treated well and received an amazing product.

Whether you're looking to publish in fiction or non-fiction, I am happy to help you achieve success. My work experience and schooling have provided me with an excellent basis to edit for you. I primarily focus on health and wellness because of my fitness background, but I enjoy editing fiction quite a lot and am working to expand that aspect of my portfolio. I provide copy, line, substantive, and developmental editing. If you're not quite sure where you sit on this spectrum yet, you can always get a manuscript assessment done where I will detail the strengths and weaknesses of your manuscript thus far, and you can make the changes as you see fit from there. After that point, we can look at more in-depth editing to really make your book shine.

Some of my past clients have had this to say about me:

Maylon has done a great job at editing my book. Maylon completed the work within a short timeframe and was a pleasure to work with. Maylon also made some excellent suggestions for improvement to my book. I thoroughly recommend Maylon as a highly competent editor. ~ Marcel Wilson, author of Frontier Mindset

Maylon was a pleasure to work with, very friendly, easy to reach and communicate with and she did a great job on the project. ~ Gilleard Marketing

Work experience

Freelancer

Self-Employed
April, 2016 – Present (over 1 year)

I provide editing services such as copy editing and substantive editing to a variety of clients (from businesses and their associated functions to fiction novel writers). Whether a client wants to know the strengths and weaknesses of their manuscript as it stands, or wants a more red-line correctional approach, I am happy to deliver results in a timely and effective manner -- using whatever media the client prefers. I work most often in Word and Adobe, though have experience in many other platforms such as GoogleDocs and WordPress.

Copy Editor (volunteer)

Positive Living Magazine
January, 2016 – Present (almost 2 years)

I volunteer for this quarterly publication and am responsible mainly for copy editing, though I do often get asked to do line or substantive editing and to pitch in with other odd jobs here and there. Such is the life in a non-profit! The magazine deals in sensitive issues pertaining to living with or in an HIV-positive environment and the challenges that such individuals face. The content often covers LGBQT issues and some sensational activities and stories; however, it is all geared to create a welcoming community and provide context for those who are marginalized or at risk. I love their mission and efforts to support those who need it most.

Fitness Manager and Personal Trainer

GoodLife Fitness
February, 2006 – December, 2012 (almost 7 years)

I managed a team of 12 personal trainers, encouraging and teaching them best practices for training as well as how to build a business. I also trained my own client load which meant targeting a variety of people's goals through creative problem solving to match their goals with the appropriate fitness and nutrition plans to get them there.

This career helped me build amazing client rapport and retention skills that I still use to this day. I am comfortable working with laymen and CEOs, and find common ground with both! I enjoy variety. Not only that, but I learned how to build and maintain a business through hard work, dedication, and timeliness.
