Overview

I’m a New York book publishing veteran, with an impressive track marketing some of the biggest and best authors in the business. People who know me best know that I don't do anything the same way twice, that I refuse to settle for the expected, and I'm always pushing the envelope, looking for the big idea, the new tactic that will cut through the clutter and raise awareness for an author's work. All that cleverness would amount to nothing if I didn't execute, which I take pride in doing at the highest levels. A publishing marketer is necessarily a jack-of-all-trades, a fox and a hedgehog. My experience includes all of the following: Consumer and trade marketing. Print, TV, radio & digital advertising and promotion. Street teams, gorilla and urban marketing. Word-of-mouth and viral marketing. Social media marketing in its many forms and iterations. Promotion/advertising via Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr, etc. Sweepstakes marketing. Email marketing. SMS/MMS marketing. Viral video. I view the book marketing process as a collaboration, and my goal is to tease out the essence of a work, build a campaign around that heart, and work closely with the author to execute the strategy with precision, energy and style.

Projects

Chris Bohjalian

Chris is a prolific writer, a consummate storyteller, and very actively involved in the promotion of his works. Including THE FLIGHT ATTENDANT, most recently, I have collaborated with Chris on the marketing of six of his novels. They range from historical fiction to psychological thrillers. What they share in common are fully-realized female protagonists, crystalline prose, propulsive plots, and a readership overwhelmingly composed of women.

Generally speaking, it makes publishers and booksellers more comfortable to clearly position an author's work, to assign it a clear category, and a defined set of comparable titles. It just makes everyone's job a little easier. To his credit, though, Chris defies categorization. So we've struggled with that some, fruitfully. I think with the publication of THE FLIGHT ATTENDANT we've found him the niche he deserves: must-read!

Anyway, he's very much engaged in his social media, and we've spent a lot of effort building that audience and finding the right voice. The marketing is truly a collaboration—I consult with Chris on every marketing decision. We've developed a very open and trusting partnership that I think is a paradigm for the publisher/author relationship.

John Grisham

I have hands-on managed the Grisham brand in the United States for 25 plus years. Which means that I have had direct responsibility for marketing of all his adult titles in that span while carefully guiding the overall strategy and messaging for ''America's Favorite Storyteller.''

Every single hardcover publication has been a #1 bestseller. Where many mature authors have experienced an erosion in readership as their core readers age, we have maintained an industry leading sales level that continues to confound the conventional wisdom. We have achieved that by reviving lapsed readers, recruiting new, younger readers, and enlisting core fans as influencers.

I have personally managed all of Grisham's digital platforms: website, Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. Every single piece of content that has appeared in these spaces has been shaped by my sensibilities. Additionally, as someone has said, ''80% percent of success is just showing up.'' I take that a leap further by executing on every tactic at the highest level.
