I am a professional copy-editor, proofreader and writer with 14 years' experience working in the UK book publishing industry.
Since 2014 I have been freelance, offering a range of editorial services to clients on a wide variety of projects, from working in-house on full-colour illustrated books (using InDesign) to working on traditional copy-editing, proofreading and copywriting projects from home. I am also a features writer for The Line, a magazine for Ealing that launched in September 2015, and in addition to this I create and edit press releases and other written materials for a travel PR agency. I am also a contributing writer for Run Deep magazine, which launched in 2017 and is aimed at the running community.
My role at Michael O’Mara Books involved dividing my time between hands-on editorial work and commissioning new projects and generating new ideas. I was responsible for the progress of new titles through the editorial process, producing P&L costings, monitoring budgets and ensuring schedules were adhered to, and I worked on major titles in the areas of celebrity autobiography, illustrated art and gift books, history and humour. My role also involved writing and approving copy for jackets, publicity and book fair material and presenting at the company sales conference and in-house editorial meetings.
Beginning at John Blake Publishing as Editor in 2008, I gained promotion to Editorial Director. Working across the non-fiction list, I was responsible for commissioning titles, negotiating contracts and forming excellent working relationships with authors. I frequently worked to extremely tight deadlines, reacting to news events and trends to produce ‘instant’ books and setting and managing editorial schedules accordingly. I also project managed titles from start to finish, undertaking structural edits, copy-editing, and working with authors, freelance designers, indexers, proofreaders and in-house editorial and production staff, as well as chairing weekly production and editorial meetings.
