Women Writing for (a) Change
A free 90-minute in-person taster session with Diane Debevec at 6906 Plainfield Road, downstairs room, open to women and nonbinary writers aged 18 and over. It mirrors the Tuesday afternoon core class, using the organisation’s established practice of timed writing followed by reading aloud and structured response rather than open critique. Next session 8 September, 1–2.30pm; samplers recur each semester.

Women Writing for (a) Change
A free 90-minute in-person taster session with Laurie Lambert, held at the Women Writing for (a) Change building at 6906 Plainfield Road, downstairs room. Open to all genders, 18 and over. It runs the same format as the organisation’s Thursday evening core class — timed writing, reading aloud and structured response — so it works both as a standalone session and as a way to judge the facilitator before committing to a semester. Next session 3 September, 6.30–8pm; samplers recur each semester.

Cultureword
Free weekly workshop in Room 3.09 above the Manchester Poetry Library, Wednesdays 6.30pm to 8.30pm, run by Cultureword, which has been developing Black and Asian writers in Manchester and the north for over three decades. Open to Global Majority writers - African, Caribbean, South, Southeast and East Asian, Middle Eastern diaspora and Indigenous communities. These are proper critique sessions rather than drop-in writing time: you bring your own poem, story, novel extract or memoir, and there is a stated expectation that you both give and receive constructive feedback and return with revised work. Spoken word poetry and short fiction are the group's strongest suits. Join by emailing admin@cultureword.org.uk.

Austin Public Library
Free two-hour session at the Howson Branch library on Exposition Boulevard, 1pm to 3pm, led by author and writing coach Rosa Latimer. It runs monthly on a Monday afternoon and is open to adults at any level with no booking required. Be aware of the format before you go: this is a facilitated writing group rather than a taught course with a fixed syllabus - the group decides the direction of each session together, so you are expected to contribute rather than sit and take notes.

Las Vegas-Clark County Library District
Free 90-minute midday freewriting class at the Blue Diamond Library, facilitated by author Marijke McCandless. It is generative rather than critique-based - you write to prompts in the room instead of bringing finished pages, and grammar, punctuation and polish are deliberately set aside so drafts come out fast. Open to absolute beginners and working writers in the same room; no booking and no fee.

Las Vegas-Clark County Library District
Free 90-minute evening workshop in the Paul C. Blau Theatre at Clark County Library, led by novelist and artist Brian Gardner as part of the library district's Writers Workshop series. Gardner works through character backstory, building an alien world that holds up, and designing an antagonist who is genuinely hard to beat, using his own SF novel The Banished as the worked example throughout. First come, first served - no booking is taken and seating may be limited.

Las Vegas-Clark County Library District
Free two-hour in-person workshop at the Centennial Hills Library, taught by award-winning science fiction and fantasy novelist Maxwell Alexander Drake. It runs as an ongoing series on the craft of writing a novel readers finish, and Drake teaches the same session twice each month - Sunday afternoon and Monday evening - so you can take whichever slot fits. There is no registration and no waiting list: seating is limited and first come, first served, so arrive early.

Cincinnati & Hamilton County Public Library
Free in-person workshop in Cincinnati, led by Intisar Khanani. Saturday 7 November 2026, 1:00-2:30pm at the Symmes Township Branch Library. Aimed squarely at writers for whom detailed outlines and emotional beat maps make things worse: how to develop a story idea before drafting, and drafting methods that keep a plot propulsive without a plan to follow. Useful counterweight to the outline-first advice most craft classes assume. Genuinely free: no ticket, no card.

Cincinnati & Hamilton County Public Library
Free in-person workshop in Cincinnati, led by Intisar Khanani. Saturday 19 September 2026, 1:00-2:30pm at the Cheviot Branch Library. Despite the title this is adult craft instruction on character construction: first the forms strength takes beyond the obvious - compassion, mercy, persistence - then Gail Carriger’s heroine’s journey, a plot shape built on community and networks of allies rather than the lone hero of the traditional monomyth. Khanani is a fantasy novelist (Thorn, The Sunbolt Chronicles) and the library’s writer-in-residence. Genuinely free: no ticket, no card.
