I chose a quirky mix of photographic and illustrated images to highlight the surreal elements while grounding the story in a relatable world. I took an abstract approach, combining characters, places, and surreal elements to create an atmosphere that invites readers into the story's unique mood."

"This was one of six murder mystery covers where a strong sense of place is central to the narrative. Each cover features a key landscape element and conveys a feeling of ominousness and foreboding. For this seaside hotel setting, I emphasized isolation by making the building small within the wild landscape. The birds add both perspective and drama, enhancing the eerie atmosphere."

"When working on a book, I prefer to start with the internals to fully immerse myself in the text and understand its mood. With Jumping on the Drips, the stories conveyed a sense of calm, clarity, freeness, and playfulness. The client wanted an abstract cover, so I experimented with various design concepts to capture this tone. Through several iterations, I refined these experiments to create the final design that reflects the essence of the collection."

"The aim of this design was to evoke a sense of quiet malevolence and dread, capturing the tone of the prose. We wanted to hint at the horror genre without resorting to a garish or overt design. The stag horns, while suggesting their source, also serve as abstract shapes. I used ample negative space and ensured the design interacted with the typography, creating a symbiotic effect rarely seen in traditional horror covers."

"For this cover, we started with the mountain range the author requested and expanded from there. The stormy sky and rainbow symbolize a new beginning emerging from a rocky past, with a gritty overlay to reflect the struggle in finding balance. We used clean, tracked-out sans serif text, popular at the time, contrasting with the texture of the sky to create a unique feel. I love integrating texture from the image into the text to unify the design."

"Set in a satirical future, Blake Hamner's PR chaos for an inept president and his deadly mechanical hounds inspired this design. I depicted the novel's absurdity by using a happy sticker to mask the terrifying dog’s face. I aimed for originality with this book cover, combining a political propaganda-style illustration with humor.The illustration style and colors are inspired by Soviet propaganda, and I combined various typographic elements to reflect the constructed nature of the storytelling."

"For this historical novel set in Concord, New Hampshire, during the time of Emerson and Thoreau (both characters in the novel), I thought, 'Since the setting is the main character, why not depict it?' I searched for period prints and found an engraving that I enhanced by reinforcing the black lines and adding color. The title font, Helsing, offers a hand-drawn, period look with a touch of wit that suits the story. I finessed the sweeping descender in the capital 'R' to preserve its charm."

"The sense of place was important to the book, based on the author's childhood. We used Google Maps images of a large estate as a starting point to highlight the theme of wealth disparity, which was a key theme in the book. The unusual rendering of the trees and the slightly off-color palette add a unique touch to the cover."
