The Autumn of my Life Suzanne Marsh Life sometimes has very strange twists and turns, mine began after I retired. College, I thought, at sixty five. That sounded insane even to me. I have never been one to be deterred once my mind is made up. I decided that what I really wanted to do was to become a writer, not journalism either. I wanted to write short stories. I suppose down deep in my inner self, I knew I really wanted to write. Strange how life gets in the way and it did for me. I married, raised three children and had ten grandchildre...
My Boots were made for Walking Suzanne Marsh Summer of 1966 “Mallory, there is girl that I want to date. I know that this is really rotten timing.” “Rotten timing? I have my prom dress, you said you were taking me. Now what am I supposed to do? I can't return the prom dress back! You are making me look like a fool.” The radio in his baby blue Mustang began to blare, to drown me out no doubt. Then I realized the song was These Boots were made for Walkin, at that instant I decided that so were my boots made for walking. The traffic ligh...

Summer Love Quarantine Style Suzanne Marsh Summer 2020 'COVID 19 IS RUINING MY LIFE' I thought. I am so bored, my parents rented a house out here in Uncertain, Texas. I doubt even Texans know it exits, but my Mother being my Mother needled my Dad into leaving Dallas. COVID19 had planted it roots in Dallas in early May. Mother thought the country would be safer. She had a point but there was nothing here. I am talking nothing except a few cabins on the shore of Caddo Lake. I am nineteen years old, nerdy with black glasses and mousey brown ...
Prairie Summer Suzanne Marsh June, 2000 Bartlett, Texas Having just moved from Buffalo, New York to Bartlett, Texas was a major shock to me. The weather was incredibly hot. It was the second straight month of temperatures over the one hundred mark. I was already questioning myself as to what had ever possessed me to move to Texas. I went into town to the Red and White grocery store, it was more convenient that driving to Taylor or Temple those were both roughly twenty miles away. While I was in the store I saw a grizzled old man, purchasi...

Hidden in the Taiga Suzanne Marsh I saw him standing at the edge of village, his beard white as snow, all I could think of was he was was Ded Moroz (“Grandfather Frost”). Here in the small Russian village of Okunevo nothing ever happens. I wanted to approach him but Mama grabbed my hand before I could move any closer. It was nearing January 7th. I wondered if Ded Moroz even knew our little village existed. Mama told me to stay away from him and the forest, bad things happened there, she warned. I was almost twelve but arguing with Mama was ...
The Return of Pete Margolian Suzanne Marsh I was seventeen the summer of 1967. That time of my life is now just a bittersweet memory. The war in Vietnam was raging, each day the toll rose of soldiers that were either killed in action or missing in action. Pete, told me he was going to enlist and do his two years rather than wait to be drafted. That was the beginning of the end for us. Pete, was so handsome, with dark brown eyes and blond hair, I could just picture him in an Army green uniform. I was laying out in the sun when the wooden ga...

A Cupful of Memories Suzanne Marsh The sound of the trains once again woke him from sleep. He slipped quietly out of bed, not wanting to disturb his wife of fifty years. He raced toward the window, his mind going back in time. He tried to let the past go but the dreams continued. He stood quietly staring out the window and into the past. May 20th, 1943 The dark clouds meant rain, but also cloud cover for a mission he did not want to go on. He had twenty three missions under his belt; two more and he would rotate home. Just as he took off...
Eighteen Minutes Suzanne Marsh Eve Kelly, her flaming red hair; stood out in every crowd. Today, she did not want to stand out, she wanted desperately to speak with Professor Kent McMaster. She required his aid to give closure to her Great great aunt Annie Kelly family, herself included. Eve heard through the “grapevine” and her room mate Jenny Long, that Kent McMaster was a history jumper. Jenny and Eve exchanged stories of their families. Jenny, was a direct descendent of General James (Ole Pete) Longstreet. Jenny then proceeded to infor...

The Camelot Proposal Suzanne Marsh The old man stared silently at the castle, it was his dream. His Cumberland Spaniel, walked freely over the grounds. The old man begins his story of how he made his dream come true, the happiness and the heart break of building his castle. He continued to stare at the stone castle as he began: “I began this project over sixty years ago. I purchased the land for four hundred and fifty dollars, I was fifteen at the time. It began with the idea of a cottage but it grew into a life long project. My dad and...

The Waiting Room Saga Suzanne Marsh I hate waiting rooms especially in doctors offices. There is something about being there during the flu season, with folks coughing and sneezing. I hate waiting for the nurse, who comes out, calls my name. I rise and follow her; sort of like the lamb to the slaughter. I think back to my last visit. Hmmm, the doctor ordered blood work. That means needles...I hate needles for any reason. The same humdrum pale green waiting room, there has to be some other color other than pale green. Pukey yellow, no that...
The Day the Line Stood Still Suzanne Marsh I hate waiting in line! There is nothing worse than having to stand and wait while some old lady goes through every coupon she has to find the one she is looking for. The cashier keeps looking to see how many more people are in her lane, she wants to go on break. The little old lady, keeps digging: “I know that coupon is here somewhere” she mutters to herself. You find yourself glancing at your watch, looking around to see if there are any other lanes opening, ha fat chance. Patience is not one o...

The History Jumper Suzanne Marsh His name is Kent McMaster, he is a Professor of History teaching at William and Mary College. He is a very unusual man; he has a super power to change history by jumping into the past. On his desk sits a blue stone, oval in shape. It is the only decoration on his desk. Today he has an appointment with one of his students, Jenny Long. She is a student who plans to major in American History. He cannot imagine why this young woman would make an appointment; she is an outstanding student. He is not what women c...

The Green Meanie Suzanne Marsh I sat staring at the blank computer screen, drawing a complete blank, talk about writers block, this was it. I had no idea what I was going to write about, but I knew somewhere there was story that would be fun to write and my deadline was fast approaching. The story was supposed to be Science Fiction. My fingers were willing but my brain said: 'I don't think so.' I finally went to bed, my husband was already asleep, he began to snore and I stared at the ceiling, hoping I would get some sort inspiration and s...
