Spanish Name Generator

Welcome to Reedsy’s Spanish name generator

A Spanish name generator is a tool that helps writers create authentic names for Spanish-speaking characters. Yes, for one of the widest naming landscapes in the world! Spanish is the primary language of twenty countries across Europe, Latin America, and beyond, and naming traditions vary enormously across that geography. Even within Spain, Catalan, Basque, and Galician communities have naming cultures distinct from Castilian ones.

Reedsy's Spanish name generator handles that range. Users can specify region or cultural subgroup to get names that fit a particular place and tradition, or leave it open for broader options. For each of the ten names it returns, it explains what the name communicates: its regional flavor, its era, its cultural and religious associations, and why it suits the character you've described.

How to use this name generator

Region and era are the inputs that do the most work. Specify as much as you know (and if you're working with a particular cultural subgroup or regional tradition, say so).

Then you can add character details: personality, social background, genre, any preferences about sound or meaning. The generator returns ten names with explanations. From then on, you can simply read the reasoning, select your favorites, and run up to four generations per session.

So you want a good Spanish name?

Names are where most writers start, and where the work of characterization is actually just beginning.

Here are a few things worth knowing as you write:

  • Latin America is not one naming culture. Mexican naming traditions look different from the Italian-inflected names common in Argentina and Uruguay, which look different again from Andean, Caribbean, or Central American conventions. If your story is set somewhere specific, make sure that the name reflects that specificity.
  • The double surname is structural, not decorative. Spanish naming tradition gives children two surnames — the first from the father, the second from the mother. García López: García from the father's line, López from the mother's. This is standard across Spain and most of Latin America, though the order and practice have evolved and vary by country.
  • Diminutives and nicknames are woven into daily life. Francisco becomes Paco or Pancho; Dolores becomes Lola; Concepción becomes Concha. Who uses the formal name versus the nickname? This signals relationship and social context as clearly as any dialogue! Getting this layer right adds texture that readers from Spanish-speaking backgrounds will immediately feel.
  • Read the literature. Gabriel García Márquez and Isabel Allende for Latin American magical realism; Elena Poniatowska and Juan Rulfo for Mexican literary fiction; Javier Marías and Almudena Grandes for contemporary Spain; Cristina García and Junot Díaz for the Latino diaspora experience. The names in these books are chosen with precision, and reading them builds instincts no generator can replicate.

A note on our use of AI

We built this tool for writers, which means we thought carefully about what AI should and shouldn't do here. The generator uses AI to produce names that better fit your character's specific context and needs — archetype, personality, genre, world — while explaining its reasoning for each one.

Here’s what it won’t do for you: it won’t write your story, name your character, or make creative decisions for you. It simply generates options for you.

More importantly, your inputs are not (and will never be) used to train any AI models. Treat whatever comes out as raw material: a starting point that belongs entirely to you. Every result is yours!
