Hindi Name Generator

Welcome to Reedsy’s Hindi name generator

A Hindi name generator is a tool that helps writers create authentic names for characters from India — drawing primarily on Hindi-speaking naming traditions while recognizing the extraordinary diversity of Indian naming cultures across regions, religions, castes, and languages.

And of course that’s because India is not one naming culture. That’s what our character name generator centers, while remaining attentive to that broader landscape. For each of the ten names it produces, it explains what the name communicates, from its linguistic roots to its cultural and religious associations.

How to use this name generator

Start with what you know about your character's background. Region matters! Naming conventions differ significantly across India's states and linguistic communities. You can also add personality, era, and genre context, and any preferences about meaning or sound. The generator returns ten names with explanations.

All that’s left is to read the reasoning, select your favorites, and run up to four generations per session.

So you want a good Indian name?

Names are where most writers start — and where the work of characterization is actually just beginning. Here are a few things worth knowing as you write:

  • India is not one naming culture. This cannot be overstated. Hindi names, Tamil names, Bengali names, Marathi names — these are distinct traditions, not interchangeable variants of a single "Indian" style. A name from the wrong regional or linguistic tradition for your character's background will register immediately to readers from that community.
  • Religion shapes naming as much as language does. Hindu names often draw on Sanskrit and reference deities, virtues, or cosmic concepts. Muslim names in India draw on Arabic and Persian traditions. Sikh names frequently use the shared surname Singh (for men) or Kaur (for women) alongside a given name. Getting the religious tradition right is as important as getting the language right.
  • Caste and community are often encoded in names. Surnames in particular can signal caste, sub-community, and region in ways that carry significant social weight. This is sensitive territory that’s worth handling with awareness rather than avoiding entirely, since these distinctions shape the lives of your characters whether you name them explicitly or not.
  • Naming conventions vary by generation and urbanization. Traditional Sanskrit names sit alongside Anglicized names, shortened nicknames, and hybrid forms in ways that reflect India's colonial history and contemporary cosmopolitanism. A character's name can tell you something about their family's relationship to tradition, modernity, and aspiration.
  • The relationship between formal and informal names is layered. Many Indian characters go by a pet name or nickname within the family — often entirely different from their official name — and a more formal name in the wider world.
  • Read the literature. Arundhati Roy, Vikram Seth, Jhumpa Lahiri, Rohinton Mistry, Aravind Adiga— these writers will show you how names function in Indian fiction with a nuance no generator can replicate.

A note on our use of AI

We built this tool for writers, which means we thought carefully about what AI should and shouldn't do here. The generator uses AI to produce names that better fit your character's specific context — region, religion, language tradition, era — while explaining its reasoning for each one.

Here's what it won't do: write your story, name your character, or make creative decisions for you. It generates options. The choosing is yours.

Your inputs are not — and will never be — used to train any AI models. Whatever comes out is raw material: a starting point that belongs entirely to you.
