The Night of Confessions

Drama Suspense Thriller

Written in response to: "Set your story at a dinner where two or more people share the table. Each is carrying a secret, or hiding something about another person in the room." as part of Around the Table with Rozi Doci.

Rain lashed against the windows of the old Stanford mansion as thunder rolled across the sky. Inside the dining hall, a long wooden table glowed beneath the soft light of candles. The electricity went out an hour ago, trapping everyone in a strange world of shadow and silence. Seven people sat around the table. Mr Adam Standford, the wealthy owner of the house, sat at the head. Beside him was his second wife, Isabella, dressed elegantly in emerald silk. Across from her sat Yeman, Adam’s son from his first marriage; he put his coat in the chair and folded his hands, crossed. Near the fireplace sat Emily, the family lawyer, nervously adjusting her dress. At the far end was Dona, Adam’s younger sister, whose smile always seemed too sharp to trust. Two servants, David and old Madona, stood quietly near the walls. The storm outside seemed impossible.“Since we are all trapped together,” Adam said, lifting his glass, “perhaps tonight we should speak honestly for once.” Nobody replied. The candles flickered violently as thunder shook the mansion. Then Isabella laughed softly. “Honestly? That would be dangerous in this family,” Yeman looked up immediately. “Maybe honesty is exactly what we need.” An uncomfortable silence followed. Dinner continued quietly until Madona suddenly entered carrying a dusty wooden box. Sir,” she said shakily, “I found this in the attic.”Adam frowned. “What is it?”Madona placed the box on the table. Inside were old letters tied together with a red ribbon. Yeman reached for them first. Her eyes widened after reading the first page.“These are Mother’s letters. Adam stiffened.“She wrote these just before she died,” Yaman whispered. Isabella shifted uneasily. “Perhaps this isn’t the right time—”“No,” Yeman interrupted sharply. “It is exactly the right time.”He unfolded another letter, his voice trembling as he read aloud. If anything happens to me, know that I never trusted Dona. The room froze. Dona’s smile vanished. “That’s absurd,” Yeman slammed the letter onto the table. “My mother died falling from the staircase two days after writing this.”It was an accident,” Dona replied coldly.“Was it?” he demanded. Thunder cracked overhead. Adam stood up suddenly. “Enough. Your mother was paranoid during her illness. But you never let the police investigate properly,” Yeman said. Isabella quietly placed her fork down. “There’s more you should know.”Everyone turned toward her. For a moment, only the sound of rain filled the room. Then Isabella spoke. The night your mother died… I saw someone arguing with her near the staircase.”Yeman leaned forward. “Who?” Isabella hesitated.“Dona.”Dona rose angrily from his chair. “She’s lying!”She threatened to expose you,” Isabella continued. “You were stealing money from the family business,” Emily suddenly cleared her throat. Sweat glistened on her forehead.“That part is true,” she admitted quietly. Adam stared at her in shock. “You knew?” Emily nodded miserably. “I helped cover the missing funds.” The candles seemed to dim further. Dona laughed bitterly. “Wonderful. Since we’re confessing tonight, should we tell every secret?”You pushed her, didn’t you?” Yeman whispered. Dona’s face hardened.“No,” she said. “But I did fight with her. She slipped while trying to walk away from me.”Yeman looked horrified.“You let everyone believe it was an accident.”And who would have believed me?” Dona snapped. “Adam worshipped his perfect wife. The police would have destroyed me.”Adam bolted the table with his fist.“You killed her!”No,” Dona shouted back. “I was angry, yes. But I never touched her.”Silence swallowed the room again. Then old Madona murmured from the doorway.“She’s telling the truth.”Everyone turned toward the old servant. Madona’s hands trembled. “I saw Madam fall. She slipped because the railing was loose.”Yeman blinked in confusion. “Loose?”Madona lowered her head. “I was supposed to repair it that week. I never did.”David gasped softly. Adam looked stunned. “Why didn’t you tell anyone?”Because I was afraid,” Madonna whispered. “Madam died because of my negligence.” The storm outside seemed to soften slightly, as if the house itself had been listening. Yeman sat down slowly, tears gathering in his eyes.“All these years,” he murmured, “I hated everyone at this table.”Nobody spoke. Then Emily inhaled deeply. “There’s still another confession.”Adam looked exhausted. “What now?”Emily removed a document from her briefcase and placed it carefully on the table.“Your company is bankrupt.”The room erupted.“What?” Adam shouted.“You lost millions in failed investments,” Emily said. “I hid it to protect your reputation.”Isabella stared at her husband in disbelief.“You told me everything was stable.”I thought I could fix it,” Adam admitted quietly.Dona laughed darkly. “The great Adam Standford finally falls.”Stop it,” Yeman snapped.Everyone fell silent again. For the first time that night, the anger in the room seemed replaced by exhaustion.Outside, the rain slowly weakened.Yeman looked around the table at the broken faces illuminated by candlelight. A family filled with lies, fear, guilt, and regret.Yet beneath all of it, they were still human.“We destroyed ourselves by hiding the truth,” he said angrily. No one argued.Isabella reached across the table hesitantly and touched Yeman’s hand. After a long pause, Yeman allowed it.Madona quietly wiped her eyes.Thunder rumbled one last time in the distance. Then, suddenly, the lights came back on.The brightness felt strange after hours of darkness.Nobody moved immediately.Because something had changed in the mansion that night. The secrets buried for years had finally risen to the surface.Painful truths had been spoken aloud. And though forgiveness would not come easily, the silence between them was finally broken. It was, after all, the night of confessions. After these confessions, everyone's lives return to normal, and Dona starts working for other clients. From that day on, Yeman didn't talk to his stepmother and father after that confession night.Madonna and David, too, started remaining quiet now, and Mr Standford divorced Isabella. But still, his relationship with Yeman was not good anymore. After a few days, Yeman moved out of the Stanford mansion and started to live separately from his father, and when he went, he took away the letter from his mother. And also, Adam disowned Dona, and Dona moved out of the mansion.Yeman took admission in a university and works as a waiter. After a few years, Mr Stanford died, and the Stanford mansion was sold to another person by David and Madonna. And they move to some other places to work. Dona married a person and started an independent life.
