The Last Good Thing About Me

The rain had been falling over the Chinese village of Xitang for three days when Alejandro Vargas arrived with a secret he had spent ten years trying to bury. Xitang was a village of narrow canals, stone bridges, whitewashed houses, and red lanterns that swayed above the water. Tourists visited during summer, but in October, the streets belonged to older adults, shopkeepers, stray cats, and the occasional stranger who came looking for something he had lost. Alejandro claimed he had come to write a book. The truth was that he had come to find...

The Seventh Member

The first thing Min-Seo noticed about lockdown was how loud silence could be. From the small apartment she rented in Wellington, she could hear things she had never noticed. Before- the ticking of the kitchen clock, the hum of the refrigerator, rain tapping against the window, even the occasional footsteps of someone walking alone on the pavement below. But there were almost no voices. New Zealand was under lockdown. The streets of Wellington were nearly empty. Shoes were closed. Cafes were pulling down their shutters. People stayed inside t...

What They Chose Not to See

The first time Michael Steward saw the woman, she was standing on the opposite side of the street in Seoul. It had turned 1:13 a.m. Rain had turned the pavement in Hongdae into a sheet of black glass, reflecting neon signs in broken colours. Michael stood beneath the narrow roof of the convenience store, holding a cup of coffee that had already gotten cold. The woman stood beneath a dead streetlamp. She wore a pale red coat. She wasn’t holding an umbrella. She was staring directly at him. Michael blinked. A car passed between them. When it w...

The House That Remembered

When Peter received the letter, he was standing on the balcony watching the rain turn the narrow lane outside his apartment into a silver stream. The envelope was old-fashioned, blue-coloured and sealed with black wax. There was no return address. Only his name was written across the front. Peter Shepard. He opened it with a trembling finger. Inside was a simple sheet of paper. To Peter: the house belongs to you now. You have inherited it from your grandfather, Kelvin Shepard. There is only one condition: before you decide what to do with th...

The Leap

The bus disappeared as soon as Lola reached the BSTC. She stood frozen, one hand gripping the strap of her worn leather bag, the other clutching the bus ticket that had taken her three weeks of courage to buy. The red light disappeared into the mist, carrying away the job offer she had spent years dreaming about. One phone call from her father had changed everything. Your mother collapsed, he said, his voice trembling. The doctor says she will recover, but she keeps asking for you. So Lola had stepped away from the bus door, and the job offe...

Every House Has One

The old house at the end of Maria Lane had stood empty for ten years. People said it was haunted. Children dared one another to touch its rusted gate before running away laughing. Adults simply looked away wherever they passed, as though the house had become a part of the landscape -a thing to be ignored rather than remembered. When Anthony inherited it from his great-grandfather, everyone told him to sell it. It had terrible memories, his grandfather warned him. But he denied it every time. He had never believed in ghosts. He believed in un...

The Bread-maker's Daughter

Every morning before dawn, the little village of Alderbrook awoke to the scent of fresh bread. The smell drifted from a small stone bakery tucked beside the market square, where Thomas Alden, the village bread-maker, had worked for nearly forty years. His hands were rough with flour, his back bent with age, but every loaf he baked carried the same warmth that had fed generations. His daughter, Eliza, had grown up beside the great brick oven. As a child, she shaped tiny rolls while her father kneaded dough. By the time she was sixteen, she c...

The Turning Point

The rain had been falling since dawn, drumming steadily against the windows of the old house at the end of Maple Street. Inside, the atmosphere was no warmer. Twenty-eight-year-old Victoria sat at the kitchen table, stirring a cup of coffee she had no intention of drinking. Across from her sat her father, Richard. Between them stretched years of silence, disappointment, and words neither had ever found the courage to say. It had been three years since Victoria had moved out. It's been three years since their last actual conversation. Three y...

Invisible Crown

The old trophy cabinet stood in the center of the school hallway like a monument to everyone who mattered. Every morning, students slowed down to admire the shining cups, medals, and framed photographs. Names of champions, scholars, athletes, and artists glittered beneath the glass. Seventeen-year-old Andrew looked at the cabinet every day. Because his name was never there. He knew every engraved plaque by heart. Some belonged to students who had graduated years ago. Others were for students who remained celebrities. Meanwhile, Andrew drifte...

The Night of Confessions

Rain lashed against the windows of the old Stanford mansion as thunder rolled across the sky. Inside the dining hall, a long wooden table glowed beneath the soft light of candles. The electricity went out an hour ago, trapping everyone in a strange world of shadow and silence. Seven people sat around the table. Mr Adam Standford, the wealthy owner of the house, sat at the head. Beside him was his second wife, Isabella, dressed elegantly in emerald silk. Across from her sat Yeman, Adam’s son from his first marriage; he put his coat in the cha...
