Weekly Contest #376
I simply love old houses; they have so much character. It is such a treat to go in and find out what their secrets are. When I was coming up, I looked at many possible careers, but a real-estate agent seemed to suit me the best. My mother, bless her enjoyed treating animals. She was a gifted healer and could seemingly talk to animals. What am I saying, seemingly talk to animals. Of course she could talk to them, she was a witch after all. Just as I am a witch and my sister is. My sister chose to become a chemist; I never did well with potion...
The sun is finally coming up! I can hear the birds beginning to sing outside my window. I am dripping with sweat from tossing and turning all night. I need to get up but I feel so unsteady right now. I just lay in bed and look at the ceiling fan turning overhead. Nearly a half an hour passes before I hear the first bus stop by the corner. I know it is just before 6:30 am but I am not really feeling it today. I want to stay in bed, but my bladder forces me to get up and go pee. Man, I just hate times like this. I get out of the bathroom, and ...
Weekly Contest #373
Do not come out here, you are not ready yet. That was the one and only message that was received. To every Satellite, Radio Telescope and Receiver on planet Earth. It was translated into every known language and dialect. For one moment, the whole world held it's breath, then blinked. This cannot be real. This has to be a joke. Those were the sentiments. For one brief second, it seemed that humanity collectively was reconsidering what we were about to do. Then, as if we were simply wiping sweat from our brow with a napkin, we went forward any...
Weekly Contest #371
I was not sure about this job at first. I mean I need the extra money. The place is empty and just sitting until the city decides on what to do. It seems so surreal at the moment. I can hear each of my footsteps as I patrol the East wing. Southwest Hospital used to be a vibrant teaching hospital in its Hay Day. Now it is just filled with humming bright fluorescent lights and echoes. The one thing about being a security guard is that you don't have to do much. This position is not an armed position, so I really do not have to worry about the ...
Weekly Contest #370
I get so tired on these overnight shifts. I have been basically a slave for years now. First as an undergraduate student, now as a research assistant and a TA. The overnight shifts are the worst. I am babysitting a nano reactor that produces chronoton particles. I feel more like a security guard at a power plant than a doctoral candidate. I keep track of saturation levels and flow of the particles into the storage containment. I cannot believe Steven Hawkins ever had to do such grunt work. That is the last thing I remember before waking up 2...
Weekly Contest #369
The noise of the city never ceases. Car horns, people clamoring around each other. That was what drew me to Chicago. I had visions of being a reporter. I saw myself getting my name splashed across the front page of a paper. I saw a bright future for myself. That was 4 years ago, right after I graduated college from Columbia's Journalism school. Now 4 years on, I finished a paid internship and I am a copy editor, you know the person who checks another persons work but never gets their name included in any place of prominence. A person who has...
Weekly Contest #366
I am so glad to be home! There is a song about Blue Monday, well mine has been black. I tried to unlock the door to my apartment, and the key broke off in the lock. It is now 7pm and I am exhausted. It took my buildings landlord an hour to get the lock fixed. Now all I want to do is just get out of soggy clothes and into a hot shower. Some days you should just stay in bed. This was one of them! At 4am this morning, my alarm clock went off. I rolled over and hit the snooze button, but it wouldn't shut off. Finally, after several minutes, I ju...
Weekly Contest #364
It is unusually warm for March. I am on the south corner just 2 blocks from the down town area. This is one of the corners I hang out on. I work the night shift at a laundry service that cleans all the linens for the local hotels. It gives me access to come and go without arousing too much suspicion . People come to this city for all kinds of reasons. Some come on business, others come for pleasure. Some not all seem to find their way to people like me. I can supply happiness, relaxation or help you just lose yourself if that is what you wan...
The shadows do not fall easy as the sun sets. The empty room seems so lonely a place. I just stand and look at the space and I feel so overwhelmed. It all came down to this. A space where two people once shared happiness and dreamed. Now the bare walls want to scream at me! I am not sure how I can just stand here. I feel so tired inside. I can see where a table used to sit with chairs around it. I can see a sewing machine in the corner. I see racks filled with half sewn quilts. I want to just curl up in a ball and hide somewhere, but there i...
Weekly Contest #363
The night sky becomes like midday as the lightning flashes. The thunder shakes the trees and I can feel it rumble through the rafters of the house. The night is anything but quiet but there seems to be something comforting about the chaos of a summer storm. Some people are terrified of nature, but I just accept it as part of the cycle of life. I turn off the lights and lite a few candles. The wind howls outside my kitchen window. A cup of warm tea and I settle into a chair to look out the window. I can hear the rain falling on the roof of th...
Weekly Contest #322
The sun was setting over the city. Buildings stood towering over the half empty streets. On a fire escape looking down on a rundown neighborhood, a person in worn clothing sat quietly looking on at the passers by. The number of people moving from day to night was about typical. The person on the fire escape watched as the sun slid behind a bank of clouds creating the most wonderful array of colors. Then all of a sudden, a firetruck screamed down the street. The serenity was broken by the blaring siren and flashing lights. Then as the person ...
Weekly Contest #319
The sun isn't out today. I find it relaxing to come out into the open on cloudy days. I spend a great deal of my time inside. Only coming out at night gets depressing. Days when it is overcast gives me a respite from claustrophobia of being inside. Unfortunately, life has been like this for a few centuries now. Ever since my conversion, I have had to adapt. People think they truly know what it is like, to have long life I mean. Many people believe the myths and legends. Many people simply ignore the lore and old tales, they choose to live in...
Weekly Contest #314
As I sit atop a mountain, I look down into valleys and at across snowcapped peaks. I look above and see strange objects hurtling through the skies. Humans have really made a mess of things again. The last times things were this bad, humans went through a rough patch they call the dark ages. I often wonder why they always end up the same way. They start off okay, but then they become cold and uncaring. Everyone is trying to take advantage of everyone else. They create problems that are not necessary. Then try to create things to solve the pro...
Weekly Contest #313
Are you there God, its me. As I kneel in the chapel of the school, I look up at the cross above the altar. Each time I come to find comfort, I ask the same question. I know what I have been taught. I know what I have read, but often times I feel distant from the truth. I am not by any stretch of the imagination in agony or physical suffering as someone might define it. I just need reassurance that I am on the right path. Days go by and run into weeks as school progresses. My studies seem to overlap one another. All the time I am still thinki...
Weekly Contest #304
The canvas sits blank in front of me. I stare into the bland whiteness of the infinite possibilities, and I get nothing. I have been up since 7 am and still nothing. I feel empty as I sit in my studio. I just cannot seem to get the ideas to flow. It seems that this is the case a lot lately. I get up from the easel and pour myself a drink. It used to be so easy, vivid pictures of life would just jump out at me. The brush and paints seemed to merge onto the canvas, but now nothing. I decide to let it go and catch up on some reading. I lay back...
