An Arcane Case of #576

Fourteen weeks ago, case #446 was first discovered. That day alone, the dawnbreaker was able to kill 15 refined A.D.A agents without moving a muscle and those that survived died shortly after arriving in the hospital. Did no agents survive at all? No. Speculation points that those who struggled, weren’t able to. They were simply too afraid to remain alive. Ten weeks ago, case #446 was spotted in a zoo. That day alone, the dawnbreaker was able to incinerate all the animals and the security in check considering it was at night. Were there a...

Mystica Auguria

Thalia believed her eyes played tricks on her. The more distance they covered, the less cars and people were seen on the streets. She wanted to ask Dace whether they were actually going the right way but every time she wanted to bring it up she could see how versed he was in the map. What was grandpa thinking, nobody used traditional maps anymore and most of the times, locations could be pinned that eased navigation. But they knew why they were doing this, for grandpa. "Here!" Dace stuck his finger to the right, eyes glued to the map as his...

The Strange Case of #446

Leblanc paced towards the entrance, coffee in hand. He would have felt happy about this but something about a coffee in an afternoon didn't sit with him well. Not since after the disappearance of the usual afternoon sun. It was already three years, so he should have gotten used to it. But there was always something about that kind of sun and now that it was gone, he couldn't feel the same vibe. But there was something else that made him appreciate the fact he stood in front of a warehouse. The forbidden and "scary" case of #446. The Dawnbre...

A Promise

Three years. Three years and no phone call, no text or even a letter if she would have decided that route. I understood, considering what happened those three years ago but I wished she could have made the effort to reach out. And it wasn't a better time. I stared my screen, hand over mouth and tears ready to stream. The text outlined perfectly, detailing a meet up at the local diner. Yet, what stroked me more was the bolded text she put. The conversation was going to detail an "intensive" topic. I didn't understand whatever that meant and i...

Logan's Records.

The following is a story tied to the Deteriorate concept that can be read as standalone. But for better context, read the two previous stories, 'Anemoia' and 'Navigator Archives'. Entry One: The baby with two hearts. The bright white lights in the room, the woman on the bed in a blue overall with legs spread and the newborn wailing in his arms, it was all unreal. Was there any one way of explaining this burst of blended splendor and euphoria? Simple enough, he would only conclude it with a few words, ‘I am a dad!’ Though the cries were insu...

Navigator Archives.

Note: The following story is linked to the previous story 'Anemoia' as a prequel but can be read as a standalone. Terms from the previous story may be used. My hands touched the window as I peered through the view, the city was always majestic for its shimmer under the purple sky. Below it was the transparent green dome that concealed what remained of us. The silver needle like buildings stood bravely, inches away from piercing the dome while the people squirmed through like ants onto the titanium pavements, others gathered round a fire see...

ANEMOIA

Sophia slammed the door and exhaled. She was tired, of waiting and worrying. That night kept up her mind, the way her father smirked while patting her head, took his coat and left for the door. He promised he would be back, only visited the other city for work related issues. He wasn't sure when but he assured he would, no matter how long it took. And Sophia watched him leave, rooted at the center of the room and waited as she ought to. Seconds... Minutes... Hours... Days... Months... Years. It had been twelve years since Mr. Durant opened t...

Love you Always

Dear Gabriel, You must be wondering how any of this is possible. I mean, considering what I was to you. I would be the same were I in your shoes and hey, WAIT, don't drop the letter. Whether you believe it or not, it's really me. Turns out most humans were wrong, animals do have souls. In fact, we have our own deities based on the type of species we are. Oh my bad, we're actually grouped into our genus. For example, I'm what they call Canis familiaris, while others are called Lupus, basically we are all of the same kind. As I write this, I ...

VIGIL BEFORE PRAELIUM

The stars glimmered brighter than ever before as though they knew what would transpire. Contrary to the men below who chattered, clinked their wooden mugs and laughed wholeheartedly. Gathering at the bonfire, they reminisced stories. Others deemed to be their deepest, one they never fathomed to ever tell a soul. But the night was theirs, and since none knew what held tomorrow, they sought to share. A young boy scraped the ground, heading to the stables. On his arms were a saddle, he pondered why he had to place them at such an hour but to a...

THE DRAGON CRIES HOME

When Laverna saw flames coming out of my hands, I was sure she was going to run and our relationship would end right there and then. Instead, I saw her vibrant smile, comparable to when a child does something for the first time and reaches out to their parents in the hopes they would see and appreciate what they have done. The glimmer in her pupils were like miniscule stars that twinkled with enough energy, and even though they were small, their light was still able to shine the vast sky. That smile, that was what made me fall in love with ...

The Lie He wROTe

Tristan woke up, his wrists were killing him. He tried to lift them, they refused. They were clung to something. He looked down and saw them strapped at the rests of a chair as well as his legs. Where was he? How did he get here? He tilted to the left and saw a tinted window showing his reflection. His beard was bushy and most probably unwashed for days. His brown leather jacket also fitted the same role. It was tattered only holding on with the stitches made that were almost everywhere. All this he saw from the one bright light hanging at t...

THE VANISHING

"Today is April 31," I say with a gulp. "What should I get for Dahlia?" Bruno looks at me, I can see it in his eyes, he's tired that we are going back to this topic. "Dante," he says with a frown, placing his palm over his brow. "This is the final time I am telling you this. Tell your wife, what's wrong with that?" "Hell no! She'll think I'm some incompetent parent. That I don't know anything about my daughter." "How many years has it been before you've seen each other? And now because you've denied another suggestion, what do you want me to...

WAS IT WORTH IT?

Weekly Contest #347

The thunder strikes across the clouds, it's raining that much to almost flood the town. It's at night and I peer at the top of the store, DIANA'S ANTIQUES. I can understand why they have such a name, their actual business isn't really legal to say the least. A car rushes behind us with headlights made to blind someone. I'm pretty sure the driver could have noticed someone standing there at a store but who am I to say anything. It streaks through the road and a puddle of water rises hitting my back. Thanks a lot, but that proves why I'm here ...
