I Am Going To Marry You!

Romance

Written in response to: "Write a story about someone sticking to a course of action even when it’s clearly wrong." as part of Stubborn as a Bull.

"You know my father used to call me a donkey as a little boy because he said I was stubborn."

Lucy nods and says, "that explains all the craziness you are putting me through."

Lucy and Todd have dated for seven years. Marriage has come up several times because of Lucy. Todd usually agrees and says, " I am going to marry you!"

"Todd when? It should not take seven years to make up your mind. If you aren't ready be honest and let me be!"

"I am going to marry you I promise."

Every time Lucy tried to break up with him he convinced her that the problems they had were fixable.

Lucy thought to herself, no you need to be fixed inside your brain.

At one time Todd said, "I'll feel confident to marry you once I make a million dollars!"

"What! That sounds like a joke," stated Lucy.

That statement should have told her something but for some odd reason, she believed Todd was her soul mate; sort of.

Todd was handsome and very well-dressed. Definitely a hard worker, raised in a good two parent home. His finances and career were so important that it took first place in their lives. What about God? What about me, us?

Lucy used to cry every Saturday night. Why? Todd had the same excuse every time.

"I'm overwhelmed at work and need to get my rest if I plan on going to work Sunday night."

"Really," questioned Lucy.

She added, "If anything-- going to church and giving all your concerns, worries and stress to Jesus would make a difference for the better."

Todd sits in silence.

"That's ok, responded Lucy. I have no problem Praising the Lord all by myself."

"When I first met Todd he was spontaneous, energetic and was an avid runner. Now all he does is run to work. I guess I was so excited to finally have a real man be interested in dating me that I forgot about the most important thing: his relationship with God. I gave him so many 2nd chances and benefits of the doubt.

Hey, God can change anybody for good. He can change Todd. Apparently Todd was in his own world of 'I'm going to do this my way and nobody will change my mind because I am right.'"

After playing his "wife" and making his life easier to work and perform, Lucy had enough. December 25th was supposed to be a surprise proposal date. As she lay awake in the bed it was as if the Lord himself said, "daughter, enough is enough. This young man is not going to marry you this year or the next. Tell him how you feel. Angry tears rolled down her face as Todd entered the bedroom.

"Hey Lucy you awake? Are you crying? What's wrong? What happened?"

Screaming to the top of her lungs. "I don't want to get married anymore! Just let me be. No. Leave me alone!"

Todd baffled, "I don't understand why?"

"You are not going to marry me. Leave me alone."

Todd angry and confused sits with tears in his eyes. All of a sudden, "please Lucy don't do this to me! I've been through so much. Give me another chance, please. I will change and help you more around the house."

Lucy cleared her throat so she wouldn't laugh in his face, wipes her tears and responds, "okay, but you have to take your clothes to the cleaners and go grocery shopping more frequently."

Todd responded, "already done."

"Okay we shall see."

Two months later Todd already is back to his old tricks.

"Lucy lets go jewelry shopping and look for a ring, okay?

Sales lady Devine says, "Can I interest you in some bracelets?"

"No, said Lucy. I only like earrings but do you fix watches?"

"Yes we do."

"Okay. This watch from T.J. Max continues to stop and or change the date on me. This is so frustrating."

"I understand. To repair the watch is $20.00."

"Ok, cool."

Todd interrupts and says, "you like those diamond earrings, with the gold?"

"Yes I do. They are pretty and shiny."

Todd says, "we'll take those. Lucy this is a sign that I am going to marry you."

Lucy is shocked. She thought to herself why is he not purchasing an engagement ring.

"Oh Lucy let's look at these rings."

After browsing the store for forty-five minutes Lucy tries on a ring. She has never seen anything like it. Its shape and color is like a grey blue shade of a diamond.

"Lucy you like that?"

"Yes I'm tearing up."

"Oh ok, responded Todd. I like it too. How much is it?

$14,459.65.

Lucy mouth drops open saying, "OMG! What? That's crazy."

"Lucy we can afford it anything for you."

"No. Planning to purchase that ring will delay us getting married. Let's go home and look another day.

Some time later Todd's work schedule opens up. He is off Thursday night, Friday and Saturday.

"Okay Todd this gives us plenty of time to shop for rings. Let's go on next Friday morning. How does that sound?"

"Sure sounds great."

Friday comes. Todd is lounging around. Later he's taking a nap on the couch.

"Oh my goodness here we go again. I am so tired of him being exhausted. I'm going to run my errands."

Two hours later she walks in the door. "Lucy where have you been?"

"Running errands."

Lucy is hot as she unloads her bags, walks into the bedroom, and takes off her shoes. She comes into the small living room siting in the lounge chair.

"Lucy come sit with me. Are we still going shopping today?"

"No, its too late, wiping her tears again. Todd runs to console her.

Lucy whispers to herself, "Is he laughing at me? Are you laughing at me? Wow you are full of tricks. What's so funny? Get away from me."

Todd chuckles trying to hide it. "What, I'm not laughing!"

"You are smiling, what's so funny?"

"I am not."

"It doesn't matter this relationship is over!"

Todd shocked, "what?"

"It's over. You need to gather your things and be gone in 30 days. I don't want to see you, talk to you or text you unless its about you moving and leaving."

Todd sheepishly asks, "can you help me pack this week?"

"Sure."

Todd and Lucy are in the basement gathering his containers full of clothes. "Lucy can we sit for a moment?"

"Sure. What now?"

Delusional Todd says, "let's go to Capital Grille for dinner."

"Todd I'm not marrying you."

"That's okay. It will be a new beginning dinner even if you say no to me."

"What's wrong with you. I'm saying no now. No means no!"

Lucy shook her head and didn't respond.

The following week Lucy receives an email from Todd saying the date has been set. Dinner Saturday night at the Capital Grille.

"He must be stuck on stupid!"

Lucy types: "Todd I'm not marrying you. I don't want dinner and I don't want you. Wake up and leave me alone. What date will you start moving your stuff? By the way, I will be giving you your 30 day notice tomorrow since you want to keep playing with me. Are you laughing now? How funny is that?

THE END....
