When The Ice Cracks

Drama Horror Romance

Written in response to: "Center your story around someone trying to resist their darker impulses. Whether they succeed or fail is up to you." as part of What Goes Bump in the Night?.

I hear it again just after the lights are turned off. The soft, deliberate rustling of something large moving through the lower hall of the estate, then the creak of the old stair that no servant uses after dusk. Every night it comes. Every night I tell myself I will not listen, will not open the door, will not open myself to it. And every night the beast reaches my chamber anyway.

My name is Anastasia. The estate is quiet now, the servants long since dismissed to their own rooms. I lie beneath the linen sheets, nightgown drawn high about my knees because the air is warm and because I refuse to admit that I am in heat. Outside my door, the pacing stops. There is a silence that feels like breath held. Then the handle turns—not with force, but with the quiet certainty of something that has always been permitted entry. The door opens a fraction. No figure stands there that the eye can name. Only a deeper dark, and the scent that arrives with it: amber, blood, and the faint sweetness of wine left too long in the glass.

“You are awake,” it says. The voice is not outside me. It is the voice I use when I am alone. “You have been awake for an hour, thinking about me.”

You're wrong. I wasn't thinking about you. I close my eyes. Resist, I tell myself, as I have told myself since the first night I heard the pacing begin. I am not that woman. I am the daughter of this house, trained to chastity, to the long hours of chapel and the longer hours of the manners of proper society. My beauty is spoken of as a virtue.

My hands stay above the covers. My thighs remain pressed together. A litany runs through me: ruin, shame, the faces that would turn to anger if they knew what walks these corridors after midnight and what it finds waiting.

The beast does not argue. It simply steps farther into the room. The floorboards creak under it as it approaches. I feel the mattress dip at the foot of the bed as if something has settled there. A warmth spreads upward along the linen sheets, not quite a touch, more the promise of one.

“Tell me what you want,” it says. “Not what you have been taught to want. What you dream when the house is asleep, and your own hand rests, trembling, an inch from the place between your legs.”

I turn my face into the pillow. The fabric is cool against my cheek; the rest of me is not. I am burning with desire.

“I want nothing,” I whisper now. The lie tastes thin as paper.

The beast laughs, and lies next to me on the bed. “You want the freedom you have cloaked in shame. You want the touch that is not your own and yet is entirely yours. You want to stop touching yourself and simply open to a lover who understands what you desire.”

My nightgown has ridden higher. I do not remember moving. The air against my thighs is a caress I did not invite and cannot dismiss. One of my hands has slipped beneath the linen sheets. I feel the heat of my own skin, the faint damp that has already gathered. Shame flares and I pull my hand back as if burned.

“See?” the beast says. “Even the refusal of a kind touch. You have trained yourself so well that denial itself has become the first stroke.”

I sit up, and my nightgown has been removed. I'm naked, and the room is empty of any shape I can name, yet the presence is absolute. Moonlight through the half-drawn curtains shows the furniture in the room, the chair where my nightgown lies, the small table with its unread book of sermons. Nothing moves. Everything is charged.

“Leave,” I say. My voice is steadier than I feel. “I will not yield tonight.”

“You said the same last night,” it answers. “And the night before. Each time you lasted longer. Each time the surrender, when it came, was deeper. Do you remember how your fingers tasted afterward? How you wept, not from guilt, but from the fury of having denied yourself so long that release. Do you remember how you felt?

I remember. My body answers it before my will can intervene. My nipples tighten in the cool air. Between my legs, the heat sharpens into something that is beyond desire. I draw my knees up, arms locked around them, as if the posture might stop this feeling. It does not. The posture only presses the heat of my desire more firmly against itself.

The beast moves closer. I feel the displacement of air, the brush of something that might be breath against my neck. “Do you not taste it?” the beast asks, and the words are the same ones that rose in me in my bedroom chamber, the same ones that have lived in me since that first time I locked my bedroom door and stopped an inch short of my own release. “Do you not feel the nectar that flows beyond your prison of maidenhood? You were born for this, Anastasia. A flame in a cage of ice. How many more nights will you let the ice win?”

I shake my head. Tears have started; I hate them. They are not pure tears. They are mixed with the furious want that has lived under every act of restraint. “If I yield, I will not be able to stop. The beast will not leave. It will pace these halls night and day. It will sit at the table when guests come. It will answer when my name is called.”

“It already does,” the voice says. “You have only refused to hear it.”

A hand—mine, resembling the shape my longing settles on my ankle. The touch is light. It travels slowly upward along the curve of my calf to the sensitive spot behind my knee. I should kick it away. Instead, my legs open a fraction, then another. The hand continues. When it reaches the point where my thigh meets my hip, I'm shaking. My inner dialogue fractures and I begin speaking in tongues, as if I were speaking every language on Earth simultaneously.

One of my voices is the girl of the chapel and of polite society. She recites the estate’s name, my father's name, the suitors who praise my modesty, and the long years of carefully managed solitude that would become true isolation if anyone learned what walks here after dark. The voice tells me that the beast pacing through the house is only the maids and servants settling in for the evening, and that the voice is only the echo of a mind too long denied. I am terrified of the woman who would answer the beast in kind.

The other voice within me does not speak in sentences. It shows me the truth of what my desire has already decided. The way my hips have tilted. The way my fingers have returned to the damp heat between my legs, no longer still. One finger slides inside with a sound that is almost a sob. I have taught myself this much in the nights I thought I was still resisting. A second finger joins. My thumb finds the sensitive place above and circles, once, twice, with a precision that feels learned rather than invented. The stretch is familiar now.

“Yes,” the beast says, and the word is both permission and recognition. “This is not wrong. This is freedom. You have spent years feeling shameful. Take it, right now, tonight!”

I do. The rhythm builds without my consent and then with it. I am no longer fighting, no longer resisting. I am the beast. My free hand rises to rub my breasts. The fingers between my legs move faster. The heel of my palm grinds. I hear myself—small, broken sounds that the pillow cannot fully muffle. The beast is everywhere and nowhere: in the heat of my own skin, in the scent that fills the room, in the knowledge that desire has overcome me. The climax seizes me. My back arches off the bed. My thighs lock around my own hand. The orgasm rolls through me in long, punishing waves that feel less like release than like the final cracking of the ice. I cry out into the linen sheets. Fluid coats my fingers and the bed sheets beneath me. For a moment there is nothing but total release, the absolute certainty that I have failed to resist the beast and that this failure is the only honest thing I have ever done in my entire life. I lift my wet fingers into the moonlight streaming in through the window and study them. They are mine. The beast that paced the estate and entered this room is also mine. I was born for this, I think, and the thought no longer arrives as accusation. It arrives as fact.

When my desire ebbs, I lie still, chest heaving, sheets twisted and damp. The room is ordinary again. The door is closed. No shape remains at the foot of the bed. Only the scent of release lingers, along with the knowledge that the pacing through the halls will resume again tomorrow, just after the house falls asleep.

I turn my naked body onto my side. Sleep will come or it will not. Either way, the beast remains. It has always remained. Tonight I have simply stopped pretending I do not hear it.
