The Old ways of the Earths core

Fantasy Science Fiction

Written in response to: "Start your story with the line: “Today is April 31.”" as part of From the Ashes with Michael McConnell.

Today is April 31st , the year 2060.

It is written in the texts that the faint signals began early in 2027. At first there was just a faint hum from the outer, outer solar system. NASA had picked it up and been monitoring it for a while before they decided to share it with the rest of the world. In the year 2029 the world was so excited when the information was released, finally proof someone else was out there, which many people had always believed to be true, but had been ridiculed because of their beliefs. Coverage of the find was broad cast from every corner of the world.

It is written that the ships arrived early 2030 and with them they brought nothing but death and destruction. They were not friends nor foes, just aliens who’s only purpose was to retrieve the earths core and destroy anything or anyone in their path. While leaving just enough of the core to re- establish itself over the next millions of years. They had no interest in the life of the planet and even less of the humans and animals that lived here. They had been waiting millions of years for the core to reach its harvesting size. They needed the core to sustain their own planet. Millions of years earlier they had achieved the big bang hoping to achieve the core components out of one of the planets that they had made. In this they had created the earth. They built the pyramids, they were conductors that helped protect the earths core when it was in its infancy, later when they were no longer needed, when the core had established itself they remained as stone monuments that had always been an unexplained phenomenon the human race had never been able to properly explain nor date. They didn’t care about the happenings that were taking place on earth since it was created. The dinosaurs or cave man or humans or life on earth at all. The core was their only concern. So, they came they destroyed and they left. At first they didn’t return any attempts that had been made to contact them by the human race, ignoring all attempts that were made by NASA, other world leaders, scientists and scholars. No contact at all. Except for a brief message sent through all technological devices all over the world sent exactly 15 minutes prior to the attack informing the humans that the attack was imminent and why. Most thought it was a crude joke, others thought it a government scare.

It’s now the year 2060 and life on earth is surviving. It had been a long hard struggle but they were surviving and thriving.

Only around a half of the world's population survived the initial attack. This turned into around a quarter ,in the aftermath. Most of these were lost to disease’s, starvation and long term injuries. Medicines ran out quickly and experienced medical personnel were scarce. Who knew that the earths core controlled so many things that as humans had been taken for granted. There is no longer oil or electricity. Those left rely completely on solar power and wind power. Thank goodness for the indigenous elders who taught the way of natural remedies for maintaining health and treating sickness. Scholars and pretty much anyone who could, wrote about history and horticulture and everything and anything they knew about. It was so important to save the past for the future. Thank goodness the seed silos were not destroyed and food continues to grow. Some hard winters we lose more and more elders which is so sad. We store all our written history in plastics that in the past were frowned upon. They preserved the written papers, and they were all we have to remember the past. A scavenging group recently came upon a factory that had an abundance of paper and lead pencils in its cellar, biro pens were long gone by now. The factory had been destroyed in the invasion, but they had stored unused paper and lead pencils in the cellar because they had updated to computers and tablets, both of which were obsolete in this new world. We use what we can but mostly we try to imagine what it must have been like with the technology we read about. Something called television always interests me and I have pulled so many apart trying to imagine how they worked. Maintaining life is the most important thing now. War is nonexistent. There had been so many for the first twenty years after the invasion. People fighting for food, supplies and shelter. Eventually though, the remaining ones realised they were heading for extinction they calmed down and began to help each other. They shared food and water, supplies and learnings from the past. They made communities and worked together to stay alive. Most diseases have long since disappeared and most people die from either old age or sometimes accidents. Human life is the most precious thing and finding ways to preserve it is the main aim. Extinction had been so close in the past. So many animals were just a memory of the elders and are now stories they share with us. Apparently, there had been domestic animals called dogs and cats who actually lived in the houses with humans. Some of their stories are so hard to believe. The fish and birds survived, as did the crocodiles and alligators, chickens, cows, horses and sheep. Apparently, I have been told that, people used to eat them. That’s not something I would like to try. We eat fruits and vegetables and fish, oysters and clams. It’s believed that once the earths core gets to a certain size then things will go back to the old ways. That cars and planes and trains and all forms of transport will return. We see these old things rusting away, many people live in them, but I don’t think I believe any of us will be around to see any of it return. No one really knows how long it takes to grow an earths core.

The End.

Hi! I just finished reading your story and truly enjoyed it. Your characters and world-building are amazing, and I genuinely feel your work deserves more visibility.

I’m a professional animation and character design artist, and I occasionally collaborate with authors to create short animated promotional pieces for their books. I think your story could translate beautifully into that format.

There’s absolutely no pressure I simply wanted to appreciate your work and share a possible collaboration idea if you’re ever interested. You can reach me here:
