And the Clock Struck Three

Weekly Contest #372

Arabella sits up straight on the edge of a chair at her dining table- she checks the time, 2:49 pm. Matthew- should he have gotten her letter- should appear at the door no later than 3 pm sharp. I pray he received that letter, she thinks to herself, letting out a huff of air through her teeth. She checks her watch again- 2:50. Restlessly, she gets up and paces back and forth between the tall cabinets on the east and west walls of the kitchen. Her front door faces north- oh, how she wishes this house had a large window facing either the s...

What Once Was Mine

Weekly Contest #355

Warnings for themes of death, grief. When you’re young, you have all these dreams and passions. As a young lad, I wrote and created stories with my very best friend- Adrien. We were just 7 years old when we met. Alaster and Adrien, if anyone knew one of us, they were bound to have at least heard of the other. Completely inseparable, we were. Our mothers doted on our friendship. The very first creation of ours was a comic strip for a school project on the dangers of not paying attention when you crossed the primary school playground. The...

So Close, Yet so Far.

Weekly Contest #337

Probably one of the most frustrating things about being the underdog of the family, the runt, is how in everything I do, I always come up short somewhere. If I’m competing with my siblings, I always mess something up that screws with my victory- if I even win at all. With my grades at school, I study and study, but can never ace a single assignment or test. Even when it came to applying to colleges, I applied to some really great schools, but only found myself accepted into my so-called safety schools. Something always hinders my perfect...

The Day the Forest Disappeared

There are certain kinds of people that take specific things or events in their lives and “make their entire personality” out of it. Some high school white girls make Starbucks their personality. Some elementary school boys make Fortnite their personality. The small village of Amber Pond made their rich, thick forest their entire collective personality. The small village of just 972 people was founded far back into the 1800s on southern American soil. Their current mayor- Lucille Von Der Pawll- earned the election win by making her whole ...

My Father's Son

Weekly Contest #319

I am my father’s son. As an only child, it was hard growing up deciding who I wanted to be- am I going to be my own person? Or am I doomed to end up like my parents, because I have no one to bounce off of? I never had any friends. Other family members never came to visit. My parents hardly ever encouraged me. So I learned not to care about anything because why care if there’s no one to care with you? I did okay in school. My teachers were the only ones to ever give me any kind of reward. They gave me some courage to grow and become my own...

The Most Perfect Day Ever

Weekly Contest #318

Carly’s birthday was coming up, and her parents kept telling her everything was going to be perfect for her big day. All of her friends were going to come over and there would be ice cream and a bounce house and a horse. Carly’s older sister, Lindsey, tried not to feel too jealous. Her birthday parties were never that fun when she was Carly’s age. Then again, Lindsey and Carly and total opposites. While Carly is a social butterfly who shines under everyone’s attention, Lindsey grew up being the nervous, quiet kid. Even in high school, she...

The Glass Dove

Jennica “Jennica? I think it’s your turn for a coffee run.” Dani said, pointing to the rotation schedule. “I had a feeling it was. Who’s all in?” I asked as I suddenly got very hungry, thinking about a hot chai latte with a donut to eat. “The usual crowd. Those new special order pads are in the office, you just have to ask Kat for them.” I nodded and said I’d be back soon. At our company branch, the managers take turns getting drinks from the local cafe (who we have stock in) when we have our weekly morning meetings. It’s paid for using ...

Have We Met Before?

Weekly Contest #271

I can’t remember the last time I truly had a great night out with a friend. It’s been far too long since I’ve taken time off to have fun in general. Ever since I graduated from college, it’s been all work work work. I feel like I faded away from most of my friends, whether we were separated from my lack of interaction or if they got busy with adult life, too. From time to time, I check in on social media, seeing who’s pregnant or who’s getting married next- I’m not surprised at all about those numbers given the state of my old high school....
