Weekly Contest #377
I awoke to the bathroom door creaking open. For a moment, I lay in the dark, trying to remember who I was and where I was. Then I remembered. I was home, and my friend Undral was staying the night. Ah, it must be her. She’d stayed up later than me, watching a movie. I had gone to be early to take my kids to daycare in the morning. Satisfied with this explanation, I rolled over and fell straight back into a deep sleep. The next morning, Undral and I sat down for breakfast. She looked uncomfortable, picking at the scrambled eggs on her pl...
Weekly Contest #362
The leather bound, deep red cookbook followed me from house to house. From the moment I left my childhood behind into the scary unknowns. When I was 17, I moved into an old house with my brother and a friend I had known since pre school. The book found its first home tucked to the side of the kitchen bench or open next to the cooktop. The noise of the main road penetrating even back to the kitchen. Months later it had found its way close to the beach. Salt precipitating on its cover. It stood upright on the low bookshelf. This house...
Weekly Contest #340
The Eternal Observer tasked me with a new body. The instructions were simple - get her through the next few days. I was honored for the opportunity. Usually, only the most experienced of us did these assignments. Earth beings were unpredictable, contradictory...fascinating. A doorway opens and I step through. A long tunnel where time does not exist, and I am behind her eyes. I open them and look around. These first few moments are always jarring before I can access their memory banks. I look around, assessing the situation. I am lying in ...
Weekly Contest #339
Bernie watches the kettle, anticipating the high-pitched ring. She doesn't want to alert her flat mates she’s home. She remembers a cacophony of laughter drifting from upstairs as she opened the front door after her late shift. Although she feels a flicker of disappointment about missing her corny ghost-hunting shows, she resigns herself to tea in bed and scrolling. The door to the kitchen bursts open, banging against the wall. Henry strides in, genuinely apologising to the door. He looks startled to see Bernie but his face quickly dissolve...
Weekly Contest #337
You travel along the sandy dirt track, the 4WD bouncing, music loud — The Cranberries playing. We hurtle though the national park, making new tracks on the untouched sand. It’s too loud to talk, so you hold on tight to the grab handle, anticipating the dips and bumps. It’s Dylan’s birthday today, and all he wanted to do was go to Bribie Island, sit on the beach, listen to loud music with a couple of beers. Dylan is focused on driving, and you do your best to navigate until you reach the smooth sand next to the ocean. The waves are small an...
Weekly Contest #336
“Ohh hiii cutie… I was just thinking about you.” “Well lucky I called then. What’s happening? You OK to talk?” “Yeah… I’m good. I’ve been working on my reflection notes since finishing my graveyard shift last night. Four pages… reading over them. Sometimes, I forget how insightful I can be.” “Oh... cool. Do you think it’s helping?” “Yeah… it’s good to get it all down. Some of these patients… they’re beyond help. I’ll send my notes to you.” “Ah… that’s okay. I don’t really understand your field that much… won’t be able to give you good f...
Weekly Contest #335
Abby’s phone chimes. Unknown number - Hi Abigail, I am reaching out because there is something I think you should know... It’s about your husband and it’s important. Please get back to me when you can. Abby rereads the message. She is puzzled. What could it be? Why not get in contact with him? She figures - if it was urgent, they would call. Ziggy barrels into the bedroom, jumping onto her, with Tom two steps behind. Ziggy screeches, “MUMMMMMM! Tom said he would pour ALL my milk ou-” Tom interrupts louder, “HE TOLD ME TO!!!” The bed turns in...
