Subject One

Fantasy Suspense

“Today is March 5th. We have captured a live specimen of a creature that was thought to be only a myth. The lycanthrope, yes, a werewolf. If I hadn’t seen it transform with my own eyes, I would have never believed that it was once human.

So many questions need answered. Is it able to revert back to its human form? Does it have a vulnerability to silver as the legends suggest? How does the subject spread its disease? Is it only the saliva from the bite, or is it as some legends have suggested also transmitted through its claws? Can it be killed? Can it be cured?

Time will tell. The first thing we need to figure out is how the hell we are going to sedate this magnificent creature. I need it sedated to get blood samples, if possible, hair samples, saliva samples. It needs to be studied.”

Video File 02

“Today is March 6th. We have finally been able to sedate the subject. We aren’t sure how long it will stay sedated, however, so for now we must wait and observe it as it sleeps. For the moment, I theorize that there is no turning back to its human form. The subject has been in my care since yesterday and has shown no signs of humanity since turning. I was hoping that while sedated it would revert back to its human form, but nothing has changed as of this recording.”

Video File 03

“Today is March 9th. A few days have gone by, and I have discovered some fascinating things about our test subject. The myth involving the weakness to silver appears to be true. I had some silver tipped syringes prepared immediately after the subject was captured, just in case they were needed to pierce the subjects hide. I did in fact need those syringes to obtain the blood needed to study.

When I introduced silver into the blood samples, they were destroyed. I am positive that silver will hurt the subject. Currently I am having a new cell built with silver bars to better contain the subject. And for a drastic situation I hope to not need, I have requested some silver bullets be made in case it escapes our care.

Also, the full moon has passed, and the subject remains in its lupine form. The hope that it will ever return to its human self dwindles with every passing day. Either the full moon myth was merely a coincidence, as the subject turned during the full moon, or it is entirely true. Though I do not understand what power the moon cycle holds on the subject beyond its transformation.”

Video File 04

“We lost a man today. While attempting to move the subject to its new cell it awoke from its sedation and tore an assistant to pieces. We had two options, kill it with the bullets made of silver, or watch as the assistant was eaten. The decision was difficult to make, but we chose to leave the subject unharmed. There was still too much to learn from it.

We had been feeding the subject fresh meat from a local butcher. While it certainly ate what it was given, I think it lives to hunt. What better prey for it to hunt than mankind?”

Video File 05

“Today is March 18th. We haven’t learned much recently, which is why there has been no new video files. We were able to move the subject into its new cell, after increasing the amount of sedative we laced its food with. The subject continues to wake from sedation faster and faster, however, and I fear that giving it too much might kill the subject. If that’s even possible. While finding a cure is imperative, I’m not ready to lose my subject just yet.

What we have confirmed is that the disease is transmitted not just by the saliva, but the same bacteria are present on its claws. If it attacks its prey and doesn’t kill it, then I believe that it too would transform as the subject has.

I wonder what effect the bacteria would have on other living creatures. We have some lab rats available; I may need to test the theory that the bacteria only effects humans.”

Video File 06

“Today is March 20th. I am fascinated by a recent discovery. We feed some of the lab rats some food laced with the bacteria found in the subject's saliva and found that they were unchanged. Do they need the full moon before transforming? The fascinating part, however, is that their saliva now contains the same bacteria as the subject’s saliva. Does this mean that they can now turn humans into lycanthropes, or would they change into something else entirely? I may need to find a willing subject to test the theory on.”

Video File 07

“Damn my luck! Today while obtaining a blood sample from one of the infected rats, it managed to bite me. I disinfected the bite as quickly as possible, but I am not sure if that made a difference. The time to find a cure for this disease has suddenly become my top priority. I cannot study the subject, or any others, if I become a mindless beast with only the will to hunt and kill.”

Video File 06

“It’s been almost a week since I was bitten by the infected lab rat. The full moon is tomorrow night. Tonight, be my last chance to cure the subject, and hopefully myself. We have tested several viable cures, and some have shown some promise, but have not given me the confidence that they will work on a living subject. However, time is running out. Within the hour we will test the best of the cures and hope that it succeeds.”

Video File 07

“Yesterday’s test was a failure... I can feel my mind getting foggier by the second. We are testing the second-best option as I speak.

I am going to pause to watch the test.

Things have gone horribly wrong. The cure has enraged the subject. It has broken down the door to its cell and is tearing my staff to pieces. I am helpless. Pain is now filling my body, and I can feel myself transforming.

If they can contain subject one, then I will become subject two. I have trapped myself in my lab replaced the door with a silver one.

The guards have entered subject one’s lab and have opened fire on it with the silver bullets made. Oh my god! The bullets aren’t harming the subject at all!

I believe the only thing that we have cured, is the subject's vulnerability to silver. What have we done? Have we created a monster that cannot be contained, cannot be killed, and cannot be controlled? Have I doomed the human race to become savage beasts?

In moments, these thoughts will no longer matter. I too will only have the desire to hunt, to kill.

Aaahhh!”
