Liquid Gold: Pumpkin Spice

Embers crackled softly in the fireplace, sending a steady warmth through Layla’s living room. On a chilly Saturday morning in mid-October, the cool air drifting through Stowe, Vermont felt like a good excuse to keep the fire burning.

It was a kind of morning made for comfort. Homemade gluten-free maple crepes drizzled with warm syrup, a steaming cup of pumpkin spice latte, and the quiet luxury of staying wrapped in her favorite lounge clothes and fuzzy socks.

Across the room, her Jack Russell terrier, Benji, was already curled into the corner of the couch, watching her with the quiet patience of someone waiting to be invited into the morning’s plans. Layla had gathered the ingredients for her crepes from the mint-colored cabinets and lined them neatly across the light chestnut countertop of the kitchen island, ready for when she returned.

Before she started cooking, one small ritual called her first.

Her pumpkin spice latte.

Pulling on a warm jacket and slipping into her simple UGG boots, she gave Benji a gentle pat against his side. His ears perked instantly, tail thumping against the cushions as if he had been hoping she’d say the words all along.

“Come on,” she said with a smile. “Let’s go get you a pup cup.”

Within moments, the two of them stepped outside, greeted by the crisp October air and the soft rustle of autumn leaves lining the quiet street toward her favorite coffee shop.

Leaves crunched beneath their steps as Layla and Benji followed the narrow sidewalk toward the heart of downtown. The crisp air had already brought the town to life.

Families wandered along the opposite side of the street, children skipping beside parents who carried baskets filled with freshly picked apples. Couples walked close together, hands wrapped around steaming cups of coffee as they took in the quiet charm of the morning.

That was one of the reasons why Layla enjoyed the fall season the most. Not for the sweaters or the warm meals that seemed to taste better this time of year, nor the small rituals like roasting marshmallows by the fire with a cup of hot chocolate warming her hands.

It was the feeling beneath it all. The quiet that settled in without asking anything of her. The way the world seemed to slow, as if giving her permission to do the same. In the hush of crisp morning and golden glow of early evenings, Layla found something she rarely allowed herself to have: peace that didn’t feel temporary.

When the familiar sign of her favorite coffee shop came into view – dark brown wood etched with soft gold lettering – Layla felt something in her chest.

She and Benji stepped inside, greeted by a crowd that stretched toward the counter, voices blending into a low steady hum. But it was the scent that reached her first. Cinnamon, nutmeg, pumpkin, and vanilla, all wrapped in the warmth of the rising steam.

It settled over her like something remembered, something familiar enough to make her linger in the doorway just for a second longer.

She took her place in line, Benji close beside her, the slow shuffle forward requiring little more than patience.

The sharp hiss of the espresso machine and the rattle of beans spilling into the grinder blended in a rhythm she couldn’t ignore. Like the soft shake of a maraca woven into a salsa beat.

The thought brought a quiet smile to her lips. She’d always done that. Turned ordinary sounds into music, finding patterns where others heard only noise.

By the time they reached the counter, Layla was already smiling. Behind the register stood River – exactly where she always was – looking just as familiar as the place itself.

“Morning River.”

“Morning, girly,” River said without missing a beat, already reaching for a cup. “Let me guess – grande pumpkin spice latte, oat milk, no whipped cream ... and a pup cup for Benji?”

Layla huffed a soft laugh. “You don’t even need to ask me anymore.”

“Please. I know your order for every season.”

It was true. She and River had known each other since they were eight. Long enough to learn each other’s habits, preferences... the little things that never really changed.

After paying, Layla stepped aside and settled into a small table while her drink was being made. Benji’s pup cup was already waiting, and he wasted no time diving in.

The tiny puppy devoured the whipped cream in seconds, leaving a few splatters on the floor before eagerly licking up every last bit.

Layla let out a small laugh under her breath, watching him. He was easily the most spoiled dog she’d ever had, and he knew it.

When one of the baristas called her name, Layla stepped forward to collect her drink. With the cup in one hand and Benji in the other, she gave River a quick wave on her way out as more people began to crowd the small space.

By the time they were halfway home, she paused at the small intersection and took her first step. The silky sweetness of the drink, laced with hints of cinnamon and pumpkin, melted across her tongue – rich and comforting, like something worth its weight in gold.

As she savored the latte, she could already hear her mother’s voice in her head – the exaggerated “blah” she used to make whenever pumpkin was involved.

A quiet laugh slipped from her lips at the memory. Her mother had always been like that. Dramatic, a little ridiculous, and impossible to laugh at.

The thought lingered longer than she expected, settling somewhere deeper, stirring for a quiet longing for moments she hadn’t realized she missed so much. Moments where she wished she was a kid again.

But she knew she couldn’t go back to those moments. Maybe she wasn’t meant to – maybe she was meant to carry them with her instead.

The rest of the walk home passed in comfortable silence; the remaining latte saved for breakfast after that first sip. She found herself looking forward to it. Warm maple and sugar lingering on her tongue at the thought alone.

Once inside, she slipped Benji out of his harness, and immediately darted through the open space, leaping onto the couch as if it were his rightful throne.

Layla smiled faintly and made her way into the kitchen to start breakfast. Pouring the latte into her favorite crescent moon and stars mug, she set it in the microwave to warm up for later.

She mixed the flour, sugar, and salt in a large bowl before adding the milk, eggs, and a splash of vanilla extract. With an electric mixer, she whipped everything together until smooth, then poured a small amount onto a skillet already warmed with canola oil.

Tilting the pan, she spread the batter into a thin, even layer. Small bubbles began to form along the surface before she flipped it, revealing a soft golden color that immediately made her mouth water.

She repeated the process until the batter was gone, a generous stack of crepes forming on the plate. Taking one, she set it aside and sprinkled it with maple sugar before folding it into a soft triangle. Two more followed, arranged in a gentle curve.

A light dusting of powdered sugar fell over the top, finished with a drizzle of syrup that slowly pooled along the edges.

With her latte warmed again, she carried everything into the living room and set it on the coffee table. Wrapping herself in a warm blanket, her fuzzy socks snug against her feet, she settled in with Benji curled happily at her side.

Turning on the TV, she put on the latest episode of her favorite show and finally began to eat.

At the first bite, she paused. Savoring the warm maple sweetness, the delicate texture of the crepes, and the light dusting of powdered sugar that melted on her tongue. A soft contentment settled over her as she followed it with a sip of her latte. Together, the flavors wrapped around her like the season itself, as if for a moment, she were a part of it.

Bite by bite, the plate slowly emptied, and her mug soon followed. Benji shifted closer, curling into her lap, fast asleep without a sound. Layla leaned back into the couch, the quiet hum of the show filling the room as she absently ran her fingers through his fur.

Maybe that was why she loved the season so much – because in moments like these, everything felt exactly where it was meant to be.

A cozy little ember of a story. It leaves the room warmer than it found it.
