17. Take a roadtrip. May 28. My family and I drove to Branson, Missouri for Memorial Day weekend. It was neat! We saw the Titanic Museum and a few shows. The Magic show was my favorite. Tucker and I demolished mom and dad in Lazer Tag and Mini Golf. I tried sushi for the first time at a buffet and it was good. My mom refused to eat any. LOL!
13. Burn some new CDs for The Bug. June 2nd. I burned ten total CDs. I got a pack for my birthday along with an iTunes giftcard and took full advantage. I did a Clara’s Summer Mix, Clara’s Sad Mix, Clara’s Jammin’ Mix, Clara’s Movie Soundtrack Mix, Clara’s Hits 1, 2, and 3, Mom and Dad’s Mix. (In case they ever ride with me.) Clara’s Classic Rock Mix, and Clara’s Christmas Mix (you never know when Christmas music sounds fun.)
4. Go skinny dipping. (Eek!) June 4th. I went with Megan and her boyfriend, Jeff, and his cousin, Dalton. Jeff lives by a lake. We were all hanging out and I told them how it was on my summer to do list. They were all down to do it! So at 11:30 p.m. we grabbed towels and walked to the beach area. We stripped right by the water. The moon was our only source of light, but that was fine because I’ve never been naked in front of a boy and I wasn’t sure if I really wanted Dalton to see me. (He’s pretty cute and really nice, but goes to a different school and I’ve only hung out with him a couple of times.) Even in the Nebraska heat, it still felt cold and goosebumps covered my whole body. We ran into the lake giggling hysterically. Dalton and I tried not to look at eachother and Jeff and Megan totally started making out in the water. Finally we splashed them till they stopped and we ran back to the beach to cover up.
6. Talk to Jake… (get his number???) June 12th. I talked to him when he was working at American Eagle. He told me he liked the shirt I picked out to buy. I said thanks and asked if he was having a good summer. He said, “Could be better. I have to work a lot.” I had laughed and said, “Same.” Which was totally not true and completely lame. And… That was it. I did not get his number. Maybe I’ll try again next week when I get off work. I work at Victoria’s Secret and it’s just two doors down from American Eagle at the outdoor mall.
5. Go camping! June 15th. This was a blast!! We did it at my house. I live on 3 acres and behind my house we have a small timber. My parents have kept it nice and built a big firepit and there’s a clearing and one big tree has lights and picnic tables around it. Megan and Jeff, Paige, Dalton, Tom, Katie, Kelsey, Caleb, and Rachel all came. My parents only had two rules: no alcohol and there must be separate tents for boys and girls. We all agreed. (Megan and Jeff snuck into the boys tent before we all went to bed. LOL!) We made S’mores and hotdogs with the bonfire. We played Cornhole and Horseshoes till it got dark and then told ghost stories and played Truth or Dare. I was dared to go into the trees for five minutes by myself. The boys tried to scare me, but forgot it was my yard, so I hid really well and then jumped out and ended up scaring them instead. A lot of people went to bed around midnight, but Dalton, Tom, Katie and I stayed up. We didn’t go to sleep till almost two in the morning! My little brother, Tucker, and his friend, Gage, woke us up by lighting fireworks outside the tents at 6 a.m. Scared the sh*t out of us!!! I’m pretty sure my dad helped them. Then he made us pancakes.
7. Host a sleepover! June 21st. I had a sleepover at my house for Paige’s birthday! Megan, Kelsey, Katie, and Rachel came. We watched 13 Going on 30, 27 Desses, and GREASE. We painted our nails and toenails. I did orange, obviously. Megan told me Dalton thinks I’m cute. I’m trying really hard not to be too excited about that!! Mom ordered us pizza and an ice cream cake from Dairy Queen. I learned to French Braid my hair! I used a guide in Seventeen and had Katie help because she already knew how. Megan did it with me. Now we’re thinking we might wear them for cheerleading when football season starts. I really hope I find a love someday like Jennifer Garner and Mark Ruffalo. Also, I don’t know why she wanted to be 30 so bad. Being a teenager can be hard sometimes, but being an adult sounds like too much responsibility.
18. Learn to French Braid my hair. June 21st. Learned at my sleepover! Thank you, Seventeen and Katie!!
9. Save money to buy the new iPod Nano. June 24th. I love it!!! I got the pink one! It’s so nice for running! I uploaded, like, a hundred songs. A lot of Kelly Clarkson and Fall Out Boy, Blink 182, Hilary Duff, and REO Speedwagon.
1. Go to a midnight movie. June 29/30th. My friends Megan, Paige, Katie, and I went to The Twilight Saga: Eclipse. It was amazing!! We got there at 10:15 and sat in line playing UNO and eating popcorn till they let us in at 11:45. Everyone brought blankets amd wore pajamas and even though we bought stuff from the concessions, we still smuggled in extra snacks in our purses. Team Jacob forever!
14. Go Boating. July 4th. Jeff’s parents took me, Megan, Jeff, Dalton, Tom, and Katie out on their boat. We swam and Jet Skiid all afternoon. I rode with Dalton and he smelled so good. Maybe that’s weird to say since we were in the lake, but I had to hold onto him pretty tight and he just smelled really good. Then, when it got dark we sat on the water and watched fireworks go off all around us. It was kind of magical. They reflected off the water and echoed off the houses. They seemed to last forever. I sat next to Dalton and his arm totally kept bumping into mine. I think maybe he was trying to put his arm around me. I kind of wish he would have.
11. Do the rip-chord at Worlds of Fun. July 10th. So freaking awesome!!! The five seconds of free-falling before the harness catches was terrifying, but I did it with Dalton and we both screamed and he held my hand which helped a lot!
17. Take a roadtrip. July 10th. I know I already wrote about a roadtrip, but this is worth documenting too! We drove down to Worlds of Fun in Kansas City. That’s when I did the Rip-chord. (Obviously.) It was a blast and extremely hot! I think the heat kept it from being crazy busy. Jeff drove his Oldsmobile and Megan rode up front while Dalton and I were in the back. We each brought our CD cases and took turns playing a CD. I played Clara’s Summer Mix. Dalton played a Rise Against album. I’d never heard of them, but he texted me a couple of the songs so I would remember to download them later. Dalton and I played Hangman and The Dots Game in the back seat with the notebook I brought. I usually won. On the way home, he drove and I sat up front with him. Megan and Jeff fell asleep in the back. Dalton dropped me off at home first and walked me to my door. He asked if he could take me out to dinner next week. I totally said yes!
16. Go bowling. July 18th. I went with my parents and Tucker, Megan, Jeff, and Dalton. We were terrible, but it was still fun! Caleb was there and he’s super good. He’s in Bowling Club, which I didn’t even know was a thing. He bowled with us for one game and shot a 245. I shot an 87. LOL!!
20. Kiss someone. (Jake???) July 20th. No, I did not kiss Jake. LOL! But… I kissed DALTON! We went on our date and after dinner we got ice cream and walked around the park. I was so nervous, but it was totally fine and talking to him was so easy. He held my hand and when he dropped me back at my house he walked me to the door again, but this time he KISSED ME! I’m still getting butterflies just thinking about it. Next week, we’re going to the lake again, so maybe we can sneak away on a Jet Ski for a bit.
10. Reread Harry Potter series. July 31st. Yes, I did time it to finish the series on Harry’s Birthday. It was just as good the fifth time as it was the first four times. Can’t wait for Deathly Hallows Part 1 to come out in November. (I hope it’s better than the last two movies!)
15. Watch final season of F.R.I.E.N.D.S. DVDs. August 9th. OMG! It’s perfect. I’m soooo glad Ross and Rachel end up together!! And I’m so happy that everyone got a happy ending. I’m already planning on rewatching all the seasons. Paige said I could borrow her seasons 1-3 again.
2. Read 20 books. August 15th. I cataloged all the books I read on a separate list, but I’m currently reading Pants on Fire by Meg Cabot. Which, is number 20. Yes, I did include rereading the Harry Potter series, for the fifth time, as seven of the books. It’s my list and I say it counts!
3. Run 10 miles every week. (Total-ish.) August 15th. I’ve been close. I have to guesstimate distances around my house (which I have done with my car and MapQuest) but I’ve done at least 8 miles a week, so I say I accomplished the goal.
8. Get tan. August 15th. Done!!
12. Eat healthy (gotta look good for Senior pictures.) August 15th. Done??? I think I ate alright. Running helped. My pictures are in two weeks, so maybe I’ll opt for more fruit till then.
I smile to myself as I close the journal, documenting my To-Do list. It really had been a great Summer! Now, I only had one thing left to do.
I use the mouse to select the SD card and open all the pictures I took on my digital camera. I’d gotten it for my birthday, back in May. My grin gets even wider as I click through the pictures. The group of us camping, Katie braiding Megan’s hair, Kelsey and I painting our toenails, Paige wrapped like a burrito in a blanket at the Twilight movie, Dalton with a mouthful of S’mores, Dalton and I on a Jet Ski, Mom and Dad with their Lazer Tag guns, Tucker and I with ours. Megan and Jeff kissing by the bonfire, Tucker and Gage running from Tom and Caleb after they lit the fireworks. Dalton kissing my cheek. Dalton and Jeff bowling. Dad making pancakes, the group of us bowling, and Dalton and I doing the Rip-chord. Plus, like, a hundred more.
I select just about every picture and add them to my Facebook page. I create a new album and title it: Summer 2010. Along with a new status.
19. Update my Facebook page. August 20th. I wrote: ‘Summer Lovin’ Had Me A Blast!’ As my status with all my pictures. Plus I updated my relationship status to: ‘In a relationship with Dalton Scott.’

Hello,
I recently read your story and wanted to say how much I enjoyed it. The way you describe scenes and emotions makes everything feel so vivid and easy to picture. As I was reading, I kept imagining how beautifully it could translate into a comic or webtoon format.
I'm a commissioned comic artist, and I'd be interested in creating artwork inspired by your story if that's something you'd ever like to explore. No pressure at all I simply felt inspired by your work and wanted to reach out.
If you'd like to talk about it sometime, feel free to contact me on Discord (laurendoesitall) or Instagram (elsaa.uwu).
Best,
Lauren

This was such a nostalgic read. You absolutely nailed the voice of a teenage girl in 2010—the CDs, Facebook albums, MapQuest, *Friends*, *Twilight*, and the iPod Nano all felt wonderfully authentic without ever becoming gimmicky.
What I enjoyed most was that nothing huge needed to happen. The story is built from ordinary summer moments that, at seventeen, feel like the biggest events in the world. By the end, I found myself smiling right along with Clara as she ticked off that final item on her list.
Thank you for the trip back to a very specific time. It reminded me how magical those seemingly ordinary summers could feel.

Thank you for your comment! I tried very hard to do what you said, so I'm glad it worked! I really had to channel my inner youth. Writing a summer to-do list was something I did every year! It was fun to take a trip down memory lane. 😊

What a fun read! I love the format of each day being another thing checked off the list. It was fun to see Clara's expectations slowly change as the summer went on. Great job!

Thank you! I tried to make it as much of a throw back as possible! I hope it felt that way!
