Matilda McCormick – Editor

Versatile and experienced copy editor and proofreader specialising in instructive non-fiction. Self-help; business; marketing; careers.

Overview

I am a dedicated editor of informative and instructive non-fiction titles with over five years of experience. I've worked on books at both ends of a spectrum, from ones nominated in the 2024 Business Book Awards (Conscious Inclusion; Do Penguins Eat Peaches?; Valued at Work) to those written as the author's love letters to their industry (Product Innovator's Handbook). Crucially, the common thread is that the author wanted to help their readers through offering advice based on their own lived experiences.

It is a common misconception that instructive non-fiction can only be presented one way. This is not true! I love working in the genre as the rigid subject matter allows the author's creativity to shine in unusual ways, from using creative non-fiction to illustrate the journey two STEM leaders take to make their workplace more inclusive through real-life testimonies (Valued at Work) to simply adding a flip drawing of a penguin trying to eat a peach in the margin. If you are open to it, I can also suggest typesetting styles which will help elevate your book and make it more your own, from using different box styles to denote different themes, to creating pull-out boxes and anchoring them to a paragraph; little tips and tricks I've picked up from experience.

How I work:

+ Once I receive your request, I will be in contact with queries so I can get to know both you and your project better.

+ If I feel that we are a good fit, I will ask for an unedited/non-proofread extract from your work, both to review it to make sure that I am what you are looking for, but also to provide you with a sample of my work to make sure you are happy with my feedback.

+ On returning a sample of my work to you, I will give you a quote which you are free to accept or decline.

+ After we have (hopefully) signed the contract, we will work out more specifics on the project so I can provide an estimated schedule for the work. For copy editing, included will be periods where you can review the copy edit and answer any queries I have that will then be applied globally.

+ Once I have completed the work, you can ask follow-up queries or clarifications on my work for the next fortnight.

Work experience

Self-employed

Aug, 2024 — Present
I worked on several non-fiction books as a copy editor and proofreader that have since been nominated for awards (Conscious Inclusion; Valued at Work; Do Penguins Eat Peaches). I have also worked as a proofreader on exam papers for an educational body. Due to an NDA I cannot disclose the publisher, but I worked in both English and in other languages checking the proof (the built PDF) version of the paper against the author's submitted Word version of the paper. I carefully check each individual character on the PDF against the Word document alongside considering the layout, style and house guidelines.

Newgen Publishing

May, 2020 — Aug, 2024 (over 4 years)
Newgen is a book packager for many different academic, education and non-fiction publishers. I worked on titles for MUP, Goldsmiths and Practical Inspiration taking books through the production process, from title handover through copy-editing, typesetting, proofreading, indexing and subsequent quality assurance checks right through to press.
