Kathleen Foxx

Kathleen Foxx – Editor

Fiction editor offering developmental, line, and copy edits, assessments, and query reviews. Editors Canada member. Also a literary agent.

Overview

*** Fully booked for 2025! Now taking bookings in MAY 2026. Bookings are available on a first-come, first-served basis. ***

Kathleen is a freelance fiction editor, editorial-minded literary agent, host and producer of a writing advice podcast (currently on hiatus but back episodes are available), former audio editor for another popular writing advice podcast, and co-founder/organizer/host of a former online pitching platform for writers and industry professionals. She's also proofread books for an indie publisher in Toronto, and is the previous Primary Co-chair of Editors Canada Hamilton-Halton (of which she remains an active member) and previous International Rep for Crime Writers of Canada.

Please note Kat is typically booked 5-7 months in advance for full manuscript edits and works with authors all over the world. Smaller manuscripts and query materials are generally booking 2-4 weeks out, depending on the size of the project. She encourages authors to book as soon as possible to secure their preferred time. Kat books on a first-come, first-served basis.

She typically reads and edits adult (and some YA) novels in the following genres: domestic or psychological thrillers, domestic suspense, gothic fiction/horror, historical and historical fantasy, speculative, supernatural/paranormal (more ghosts and witches than vampires and werewolves), and some rom-coms. Kat particularly loves twisty, jaw-dropping thrillers, haunted houses, ghosts, ancestry, time travel, witches, and anything to do with soulmates/soul connections, reincarnation, and past lives. She maintains a 5-star average rating in her services as she always provides exceptional work with a friendly, open, and professional communication style. Kat loves immersing herself in stories, and loves helping writers learn how to tell their stories and get them out into the world!

Kat does not take on projects in the following genres: heavy politics, war, or religion; erotica; heavy, intentional violence toward women and/or children; poetry; heavy sci-fi/high-tech; epic fantasies; space operas; werewolves; biographies/autobiographies; DIY; academic works; self-help; health & fitness; sports. If your story contains bits of these elements that's ok, but if it's *about* these topics, or they're present from the first scene to the last, she's probably not the right editor for you. She does not, nor will she ever work on manuscripts that have been generated by AI or that are in support of Trump and his minions. Ever.

For critiques of queries and synopses, Kat's rates reflect a typical one-page, single-spaced (under 500 words) query letter and a maximum of 1000 words for a synopsis. She is happy to critique higher-than-typical word counts to help you pare them down for an additional fee. More information on industry-standard fees can be found here: https://blog.reedsy.com/guide/how-to-self-publish-a-book/cost-to-self-publish/

Work experience

The Rights Factory

Mar, 2023 — Oct, 2023 (7 months)
Kathleen was an editorial assistant at The Rights Factory, a literary agency based in Toronto, ON. She worked with clients on edits, read for other agents to provide feedback for their clients, and helped prepare submissions lists.

The Rights Factory

Mar, 2023 — Present
Beginning as an editorial assistant and mentoring under Sam Hiyate (owner), Kat is now an assistant (new) literary agent hungry to build her list of talented clients! Note: she does not rep manuscripts she's been paid to edit due to a conflict of interest.

Self-employed

Sep, 2020 — Present
For full manuscripts, Kathleen provides structural/developmental, stylistic/line, and copy edits and proofreading services for private clients. She also provides query package critiques, manuscript assessments, pitch critiques, webinars and/or pre-recorded courses focused on self-editing, craft, etc., and retainer services. She has proofread books for a small Canadian indie publisher in addition to her private clients and was the Primary Co-chair of the Hamilton-Halton branch of Editors Canada in 2022-23. She remains a member of Editors Canada.

Kathleen edited my 90K-word upmarket speculative novel, which blends grounded science fiction with multiverse theory, family secrets (told through two separate storylines), and emotional depth. I know... it's a lot. In short, working with her was an absolute joy. Her editorial feedback was sharp...

My collaboration with Kathleen surpassed all my expectations. She was super-professional, very helpful with advice, and kind and encouraging. Kathleen and I collaborated on my horror novel, and she helped me polish it and get into the right shape for the querying process. Her comments (in the re...

We had a problem very early when I was assured the job would cost a certain amount after conversion from US to Canadian and then to Australian dollars; it actually cost $117 more than I was told and I challenged the amount. I don't think Kathleen got over that. There followed comical line edits t...

What unexpected skills do you need as a literary agent?

PATIENCE. Patience is key in a literary agent role. Writers hear all the time that they need to have patience when writing, editing, querying, and going through the submissions process (assuming they sign with an agent and their manuscript goes out on submission). Sometimes, it doesn't happen wi...

Are you #TeamPrologue or #TeamNoPrologue, and why?

Echoing what others have said, this is a complex question. I love a good prologue--with the key word being good. Many newer (and sometimes even seasoned!) authors attempt a prologue that doesn't end up serving the story well. They either provide a bunch of backstory to set up the story (instead o...

When is it appropriate for authors to follow up on query letters, and how long should they wait before doing so?

Check with the agency's or agent's guidelines on this; often, there will be something on the website or on the query form that will say something like, "If you don't hear back within X weeks, consider it a pass" or even, "Please wait X weeks before following up." Always follow the guidelines. Un...
