Rita Ray

Rita Ray – Editor

As a seasoned copyeditor with experience helping writers reach their audience, I look forward to chatting with you about your manuscript! 📚

Overview

You’ve taken care of the big picture, and your story is structurally sound—the plot, characters, and themes are solid. Now it’s time to focus on the details. That’s where I come in. As a line editor, copyeditor, and proofreader, I help refine your manuscript—line by line, word by word—without losing your voice.

✏️ Experienced Copyeditor & Proofreader

I’ve been helping writers bring their stories to life since 2016. My clients include indie authors, publishers (including a Big Five publisher), Fortune 500 companies, and even fellow editors. But fiction is my passion—especially young adult, contemporary, sci-fi, and fantasy.

✏️ Trained & Always Learning

My BA in English has been invaluable in my editing career, but a formal education is just the foundation—in order to become an editor, I had to build on it. Training (and continual training) is required. My first professional job where I took on editorial duties was at a regional magazine, and I am proud to say that I’ve grown as an editor since then. I keep up to date on industry trends as a member of the Editorial Freelancers Association (EFA), ACES, the Editors Tea Club (ETC), the Publishing Professionals Network (PPN), and CIEP.

✏️ What I Do

My expertise lies in line editing, copyediting, and proofreading.

• Line Editing & Copyediting: I help ensure your story is polished while retaining your unique style. I catch grammar slips, smooth out phrasing, and help refine consistency so your readers stay immersed in your world.

• Proofreading: I catch any lingering errors that might have slipped through—whether in Word or PDF format.

✏️ When to Reach Out to Me

âś… Your story structure is solid and needs no further edits on the overall story.

✅ You’re looking for an experienced editor to refine your manuscript—not rewrite it.

âś… You want a collaborative, detailed-oriented approach that respects your style and vision.

If this sounds like you, let’s chat! I’d love to help you bring your book closer to publication—one edit at a time.

Work experience

Self-employed

Apr, 2016 — Present
• I’m a skilled editorial professional who works with not only books but also blogs, articles, letters, and more. I ensure that grammar rules and style align with the intended audience—all while preserving the author’s unique voice. • I am proficient with both the Chicago Manual of Style and AP Style, employing both routinely. Additionally, I am able to create series- and brand-specific style guides, ensuring seamless consistency within each series or brand. • My commitment to conscious language drives me to stay updated on inclusive linguistic trends. I work with writers by highlighting potentially insensitive language and providing resources for conscious language. • My diverse client base includes indie authors, large and small publishers (including imprints from Penguin Random House), businesses (including a Fortune 500), and other editorial professionals.

9to5Mac and affiliates

Apr, 2022 — Dec, 2023 (over 1 year)
• I copyedit for 9to5Mac and all affiliated brands, meticulously adhering to AP style and in-house guidelines.

Owens Corning

Jul, 2019 — Nov, 2021 (over 2 years)
• I proofread marketing materials, applying guidelines from the AP Stylebook. • I also authored an in-house style guide and was advised that the guide was not only comprehensive but easy to read and quite helpful.

RUFF!

Apr, 2019 — Present
• Collaborating with another editor, I subcontract to copyedit fiction. • I ensure consistent style and grammar while preserving the author’s voice while offering alternatives for conscious language choices. • Additionally, I meticulously adhere to and update style sheets to ensure unwavering consistency across the entirety of each project.
