Thursday Thing

Weekly Contest #92

Author note: My mother recently passed away last week so I wrote this story to sort of help me to process this experience in some way. The night had covered the sky and the rain began to pelt the roof of the building. The thunder cracked and rumbled as if a mighty engine was suddenly coming to life and then stopped all of sudden as the echoes faded into the air. The sound made Ms. Smith wake up with a start. She found herself in a hard, plastic chair that was joined by a steel bar to other chairs. There was a television fastened to the cha...

Destination Mind

Weekly Contest #90

Panting for breath, I ran through to double doors of the city L train just before they closed and a grabbed on to the nearest handle available and held on to it as the engine cranked to life and I, along with the rest of the passengers on this sort of grungy conveyance with half broken seats and musty windows felt the ourselves swaying backwards as the the train lurched forward. "Excuse me" I mumbled to the gentleman to my left after I bumped into him. The other man grunted from underneath his small tweed hat which he had pulled downwards, ...

Andante of the Hand

Weekly Contest #78

"Breathe it in with every stroke. Take it nice and slow, no rush. " came the low, mesmerizing voice on the cassette, giving instructions. The sound of a slow, even paced breath escaped the lips of the young man sitting at an old fashioned writing desk. He was hunched over the little desk, with his brown, wavy locks dangling and almost touching the surface while he focused his concentration on the paper illuminated by the light of a small desk lamp. After a few minutes, he leaned back in his chair and decided to take a small break to stretch...

Sally and the Iceworld

Weekly Contest #77

Sally Osgood sat at her student desk and looked outside of the classroom window at the frozen ground and shivered even though her desk was situated near the radiator that heated the whole classroom. She wondered if the radiator was working properly. Her desk had an open math book with a pencil in the middle of its pages and a workbook on the right hand side opened to another page with half-written answers to questions. Her notebook was underneath the seat along with several other school books and papers. This was the first snow of the seas...

Romance Alone

Weekly Contest #76

"1547 to base" "Base here. Go ahead 1547" "I've got the pod about 10 yards away for the 7th crater of the Minares Plain. The probes are warming up for scouting." "10-4 1547, you may proceed" "Roger that, Base. There's a good natural hole around here. I even see something that resembles a cave." "The boss had a planetary survey before coming here, 1547 and the survey team did find a system of caves underneath the surface. No surprises. Just be careful with those probes. They might lose coms if they wander too far down in there. " "Understood ...

The Last Leaf

Weekly Contest #75

The old dirt path was dimly lit by the lamps of the dilapidated stage coach, it's driver standing on the side, bundled in a dark cloak, his facial features hidden from view by the top hat he wore. He seemed to look to his right and upwards towards old hackberry tree that seemed bare except for one small leaf that was barely hanging on to a branch. The driver knew that it would not be long before that leaf would fall to the ground. The sound of footsteps broke the silence, the leaves making a crunching sound with every step, unable to bear t...

The Empty Space

Weekly Contest #75

Monica left the party in a hurry, her face red with the tears of shame. She looked back towards the big house where the party had been, hoping to find a a friendly face somewhere, but all she saw were the same people looked back at her. Some were the 30ish red heads holding flute glasses of champagne and various well to do husbands and boyfriends looking back through the windows and porches. It was almost as if they had formed a cordon around the house, making clear that she had been banished like Adam and Eve had been from the Garden of Ede...

The Sweetness of Memory

Author's Note: After reading a bit from other writers, I thought I would join in the fanfiction fray. Feel free to guess which one. Lol! Btw, yes, I do love coffee The Sweetness of Mind "Phoebe, this is crazy! " a voice said. " I don't remember you even doing anything with the oven other than baking frozen pizza" "Jeez, Mel. Thanks for the vote of confidence." Melanie followed her younger sibling into the kitchen, shaking her long dark hair away from brown eyes. Her full lips slowly formed a grin on her broad features as she watched Phoe...

The Colony 9 Incident

Weekly Contest #70

The Colony 9 Incident The motors of the thrusters fired as we lifted off of the Exo-8175, a planet near the constellation Lyra. I sat back in the black, cushioned seat as the g- forces pushed my body towards the back of the passenger cabin. I remember the pilots saying the required "you might feel some discomfort during take off" speech. Still, this was the least of my concerns now as I my mind recalled the massive explosion I had recently witnessed and all of the innocent lives that were lost. I shut my eyes during the take off sequenc...

Sheila couldn't believe what she had just heard and wasn't sure how to handle it. She didn't expect it on this day of all days. Both of them had decided that it was time to get together and get to know each other again. The Traitor

Weekly Contest #67

I woke up on Thursday morning shakily, got to my feet and quietly walked around the bed, so as not to disturb my sleeping wife and went to the kitchen to get my first cup of coffee. I yawned as I reached into the cabinet for a cup and poured the hot black liquid from the steaming carafe into it. This was part of my normal morning routine, of course as it is for many people. We get up, get coffee, read the paper/watch tv etc, shower, dress and go to the car for the morning drag to reach the office in time and hope that you're not late. This...

Neighborhood Watch

Weekly Contest #65

The Neighborhood Watch Stonebrook Farms was one of those neighborhoods that people would often see on television shows about people who had a lot of money but not enough to have a mansion by the sea in Malibu. Most of these places were very nice on the outside yet were more often than not, filled to the brim with competitive residents trying to out do each other on decorations or gossip about who is sleeping with whom, who should part of the committee for community involvement, etc... Young Sarah Jones, lived in this neighborhood with her ...

One Night at Campbellś Hill

Weekly Contest #65

They say that Middle School is brutal. Those friendships that were developed in elementary school seem to vanish and in its place, a growing emptiness that comes with the quest for popularity and power. Jim Haynes had made this observation in a journal that his 5th grade home room teacher had given to him as a parting gift. She had instructed him to write in the journal on a regular basis during his time in middle school. It was a leather-bound book with ornate carvings on the edges and rough-hewn paper inside. "It will serve you, well, Ji...
