Nice Day

Weekly Contest #330

NIce Day “Have a nice day!”, one of the passengers called out to me as they were leaving. The elevator hummed with its machinery as it lifted me upwards several stories high above ground level. I wasn’t alone, but I may as well be. Deidra from Accounting cast some quick glances my way, then looked away, pretending to be focused on the rising numbers displayed above us. I felt the elevator give a small bounce as it stopped on the seventh floor and let her off. “Have a nice day,” I called out. She gave no response at all as she walked...

Circe

Weekly Contest #329

The tide rolled in, grabbing sand from the shore and pulling it back into the sea, claiming it for Poseidon. High above the beach, a woman dressed in a simple off white gown that fluttered in the wind, stared at the sea expectantly. The saltwater air caressed her skin and played with the dark colored curls of her hair. The air shimmered beside her revealing the lithe figure of a water nymph took shape, her main companion on the island. “Poseidon continues to press his claim on the island”, the nymph remarked in her liquid voice. The wom...

Heather

Weekly Contest #325

Heather An Ancient Oak on an old hill A forbidden love Transformation. The large oak tree stood silently on the hill overlooking the little town of Franklin. It had been there for eons before the first peoples had ever set foot on dry ground. When the settlers came from across the sea, they voted that this hill was to be used to bury their dead. They took a day and had the priest consecrate the entire hill. It is said that when approached the large oak, he hesitated in his ministrations and suddenly fell ill. About a week later, he passe...

Angelica

Weekly Contest #309

An eternal hunger. A forgotten love. One Destiny Simon watched the rain come down in sheets from his 27th floor window as it cascaded down towards the streets below, pelting awnings, rooftops and creating standing puddles. “Not a great night for a walk”, he mused, while he watched the sliver of light descend behind the shadows of distant buildings. He turned away from the window, his youthful face, regal posture, and brown curls giving him the look of eighteenth century nobility. He headed to the second room, which he had converted into...

The Princess of Room 23

Weekly Contest #308

One long, long blistering summer, a boy drowning in failure meets a girl who says almost nothing, yet leaves behind everything. The city bus came to a complete stop with it’s sudden hiss and squeaks of the opening doors. I got up from the hard, plastic seat, slung my backpack over my right shoulder and headed out into the hot July sun. Summer school was waiting for me. The last semester had been extra hard for me. I had failed algebra and in order to move forward, I had to attend summer school in the city. I remembered looking at the f...

Ytherielle: Order of the Veil

Weekly Contest #307

Ytherielle: Order of the Veil High in the mountain country, the single spire of Davenport Academy stood like an extension of the mountains acting like a giant beacon that overshadowed the community. Many people of the town in the lowlands wished to send their children to the prestigious school, but most could not afford the tuition for the vaulted institution, even though the town was filled with billboard signs, commercials and even visits from alumni all tauting the legacy and values that it espoused. Only the very few or the well conne...

Uncle Yang's

Weekly Contest #305

I stared at the expectant crowd, searching my brain for any answer..any answer at all but the truth...and I told the biggest lie I have ever told. I paced on the little hill that rose slightly above the ground and stared at the two moons hovering above us all. "I was in the wreckage of our ship recently. Most of it just a empty husk as you know, but somehow, I managed to climb up and got the ship's emergency radio working." The crowd murmured a little until a female voice rung out. "Pop, you shouldn't be trying stuff like that! You'll get...

Nowhere

Weekly Contest #305

"Where the hell am I?", the man said as he found himself an a deserted road in the middle of the night The truck had stalled out completely right there. No power. Nothing. Ted reached into his pocket and grabbed his cell. Dead. "Oh, crap!" He leaned to his right and opened the glove box and cursed again as the pile of maps from inside burst out dropped all over the cab floor. The heavy flashlight still rested inside so he grabbed it and found that it worked properly. He grabbed some of the maps and positioned them in front of him as bes...

Squirrel's Lesson

Weekly Contest #305

‘You know what? I quit!”, I yelled out from across the room, my voice echoing of the walls. A sigh came from across the dining room as the bearded, old man puffed slowly on his pipe. The air smelled of sweet maple and a hazy ring encircled his head while he looked at me briefly and closed his eyes as if searching for something in the deep recesses of the the labyrinth of his mind. I looked at him, desparate for some acknowledgement or something. I wanted to be right. I wanted someone to tell me that this was the right decision. Perhaps ...

Night Crew

Weekly Contest #304

BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! “Scooooosssshhh..ha Scoooooosshhhhh.ha” “hhhsssssss” Red light flooded through the western window as the sun bid farewell to the landscape below. It cast long shadows as the light floated in, touching the drafting table, chair and table. Yawning, Len reached with his left hand and hit the alarm clock, almost knocking over the small picture that was resting beside it. He slowly rose from his twin bed and hung his feet to the opposite side and rubbed his eyes. He stood up slowly, stretched and sniffed the air which smel...

Weekly Contest #296

This story does have some offensive language in it. It might be triggering. "It is the judgment of this court that the young male child be taken from the mother and sent to live with the uncle so that a he can have a strong, stable father figure." The words hit like a backhand across the face as young Eric tried to process what his mother was telling him. Tears stung at his eyes while he stood there in the school office while other children watched with a mixture of curiosity and fear. Eric could hear the trembling in his mother's voice o...

The Forgotten Maze

Weekly Contest #294

"Do you Dare Enter the Maze?" I gasped as I woke up from a little nap I had taken in the small plastic chair, feeling a little disoriented. What was that about a Maze? Where was I? Oh yeah. I was in at the laundromat, and it was Thursday. Thursday: That was our thing, my mother and I. It was a Thursday at the laundromat with its bulky, industrial washers and rows of dingy dryers that lined the walls. Dust and grime lined the walls of the single restroom in the back of the place, and a dilapidated vending machine stood discarded the window...

Keeping a Handle on Things

Weekly Contest #293

10 year old Pete sat in the passenger side of his father's dingy green nova and looked out the window while his father drove along the interstate. The orange street lamps seem to float by his eyes, each one acting like a beacon that told him he was going far away from home. The sickly green interior seemed to match how Peter felt inside this mobile prison. The air inside the nova felt heavy, almost suffocating with a stench of old motor oil soaking the inside, while the headliner drooped downward like a deflated balloon. He dared not look ...

A Kiss to Remember

The clock tower sounded the time of 7 am. in the morning. "Mmmm..mmmeeehhh", the voice said putting the pillow over his head. "Mmmmmm." He had tried to back to sleep after waking up 5 am. to the sound of the PT run. This was one of the issues caused by having a dormitory near an army base. "Hey man. You know breakfast is at 7 right? You don't wanna miss out!" "Mmmmmm.. . Bmmmmmm..mmm.." "Okay, whatever man. I'm bailin'" The door opened, then shut again, it's sound reverberating in the hallway outside the room as his roommate walked do...

Cuttin' a Rug.

Weekly Contest #289

M3 was one of the hottest nightclubs in town. It booked the best of the up and coming artist and played host to a monthly dance contest. Nestled right on the waterfront, it had easy access for the yacht crowd and the usual street crowd. The 20 somethings and college kids all came here for partying, drinks , dates, and fun. This is why Gus, the club manager, thought it was odd when the next guest arrived. It turned out to be a senior citizen, using a walker. He stared at her curiously, while 2 nurses carefully guided her down the light...
