Weekly Contest #372
Last night, I couldn’t sleep… again. I know it keeps happening, I’m trying to figure out a solution, she just… she won’t stop talking. What? No, not Sylvie… the… you know. Her. I guess I’ve been anxious about a lot of things, that one application is out on submission. I know I’m not supposed to just keep refreshing the page, I know I need to be patient. But it’s either stare at the same unread application or keep listening to her. Last night she was wearing these lacey, black underwear with little pleated frills. Not to be sexy or anything, ...
Weekly Contest #349
Billy lay in the wet grass and watched the wood and canvas aircraft circle in the sky above the fjord. It was a warm day, the sun beamed down on the wet Antarctic ground, giving fuel to the rapidly growing moss and small plants that now called the once barren land home. The airplane-- which Colt had named Monarch, after the butterflies which once roamed his homeland-- was the first flying machine to take flight since the disaster. Billy and Colt worked tirelessly over the course of four years to repurpose pieces of one of the engines of thei...
Weekly Contest #337
The last time I remember leaving my shrine was during a war. Kings and warriors from miles around made me sacrifices and offerings of the highest order. Cattle were slaughtered at the feet of my shrine and burned along with bundles of sweet fruit. Daughters of great heroes pledged eternal virginity in exchange for victory in battle. Weapons were raised to the sky as thousands sang my name. I blessed their swords and their sails and carried them off to victory. Then, over time, over countless eons, I was forgotten. A god’s power comes from th...
Weekly Contest #336
It’s windy. I’m falling. And it is dark. I look around and see the sky above. The sun is rising. Turning, I see the town below, nestled comfortably in the mountains. I see wooden houses, long winding roads, and sprawling parks. Smoke rises from the chimneys. How cozy, I think to myself. I wonder if I can speak. I’ll try. “Hello,” My voice is muffled by the wind. “Hello!” the shiny bird above me smiles, “Who are you? Where am I?” “That’s a lot of questions, isn’t it?” The bird moves away from me, farther and farther. As I fall, he soars. He i...
Weekly Contest #321
Today was finally Tessy’s big day. Six centuries ago, hostilities erupted between the Earth and Eana. After an extraterrestrial message was translated and confirmed to be a declaration of war, the two planets worked quickly to build weapons for the conflict. Because Earth and Eana were over 12.4 million light years away, they had to think outside the box. Conventional weapons would be useless over such an insurmountable difference. Victory in the war would be determined by Helio-Nuclear-Powered Gravity Cannons or, Dum-Guns, that could harnes...
Weekly Contest #273
October 18, 1989 To General [Redacted] Sir, My name is Sergei [Redacted], a few months ago, you interrogated my father, Anton [Redacted] on his actions during the Revolution and absolved him of all suspicions. I am writing to inform you that he passed away last month and, while remodeling his apartment, I stumbled upon the following journal entries hidden beneath a floorboard. The contents of these entries are greatly disturbing and my mother has gone to pieces over them. After much debate, my siblings and I have decided that your hands are...
Weekly Contest #272
The Dark Lord crept slowly through his chamber, toward the stairs. The Phantom-Chains weighed heavily on him this morning. It had taken him an hour to wrestle himself from his bed. As he shuffled toward the staircase under labored breathing, he sang. If he knew he was singing, or what it was, it was impossible to tell. Perhaps it was some ancient lullaby his mother had sung to him eons ago in their cave, trying to soothe him to sleep on some long, stormy night. But he no longer had such memories of those eons long passed. He could no longer...
Weekly Contest #271
Lysander woke at six in the morning. His sleep schedule was still off. Normally, he slept in till noon or even later, but lately, he’d been waking up at six. The other day he had woken up at four and, almost instinctively, gone to the garden and begun harvesting for winter. His neighbor, whatshisname, had woken up a bit later and came outside to enjoy his coffee on the wrap-around porch. When he saw Lysander gardening he’d shouted over, “A little early, isn’t it?” “Must be ready for winter if we want to survive!” Lysander had robotically sho...
