Weekly Contest #377
CW: Substance abuse, mental health issues, grief I stare into the fridge at its sparse contents. My appetite is low, but I have that itch, that empty feeling. I thought maybe something sweet might dull it if only for a moment. But I haven't been shopping recently. A cold breeze brushes my skin, and I feel an instant pinprick of goosebumps across the back of my neck. I rub at them. "I guess I forgot to close the window again," I mumble to myself. I slam the fridge closed before the insistent beeping pierces my ears, and I turn toward the ben...
Weekly Contest #352
“Mummy, what does blue taste like?” My son asks. As always, I am met with a constant bombardment of insistent chatter the moment I strapped him into his seat after picking him up from kindergarten. “Hmm, what was that, love?” My mind is elsewhere, my day at work was particularly stressful. “Blue, what does blue taste like?” He raises his voice because he is annoyed with me. “Oh, ah love, I don’t know?” I push the brake as the traffic comes to a fast stop. I frown as my bag flies from the seat next to me onto the floor and grit my teeth to si...
Weekly Contest #339
Inspired in part by the Celine Dion song "it's all coming back to me now." The back door slams, I immediately look up from my book and scan my surroundings. Holding my place safe with my thumb. "Sorry love," Beryl croons as she bustles in; giving her hands a quick wipe on the side of her linen pants then slips back into her apron. It was my usual Sunday morning routine. Berly knew me well enough now, so she trusted me to give her apology to a potential customer, when she ducked out for the loo or a ciggie. In this small, seaside town, trust...
Weekly Contest #326
The smear of poo on the toilet bowl turns Margo’s stomach. It was the only free toilet at work, and she was busting to pee. It would have to do. She does her wee, flushes, then looks at it, repulsed. She considers leaving it there. If someone was waiting for the toilet, and went in after her, they would think it was hers. Margo sighs, as she reluctantly picks up the toilet brush. “Such a fucking claustrophobic bathroom,” she grumbles to herself, as she surveys her reflection in the mirror. pale, made her freckles stand out though, her green ...
Weekly Contest #320
The physical pain was finally drowned out by the emotional ache. All I can feel now is the agony I am in, based on my physical wounds alone. It was some retribution for the damage I had done, the pain I had caused. Soon I would be beheaded in front of the town folks. The King enjoys making a spectacle of the death penalty. What he doesn't know this was my own act of power, another choice I had made. There was a time where I would have described the monotony of everyday life as "boring." Never would I have guessed I'd spend the rest of my lif...
Weekly Contest #317
CONTAINS- sexual violence, drug use and abuse My head is POUNDING. "Eh I must have blacked out," I blink my eyes rapidly as they adjust to the sun pouring in from a high small window and scan my surroundings. A garage, I’ve got a fucking real-life handcuff on and I'm locked to a fucking pipe. No ominous dripping noises, this fucker was IMMACULATE the garage was impeccably clean. It was the lack of shit and anything at all that freaked me the fuck out. Not one speck of dust and it reeked of bleach. "Ok, ok," I soothe myself. "You are being d...
Weekly Contest #306
TW: swearing and sexual innuendo Day One I've decided to keep a journal of my experience using a cage around my head to give up smoking. An unconventional approach, yes. Necessary? Yes. I want to quit "cold turkey," so I'm going to do it. No nicotine patches. Got my girlfriend to throw all my smokes and lighters in the bin and gave her the key to the cage. "Only open this door here," I had indicated to a small door by my mouth, big enough to get food into, "When it's mealtimes," I instructed her. I expected her to be overjoyed, given the pow...
Weekly Contest #304
I open my email to read this week's writing prompts. They don’t immediately bring about any inspiration. I check my story which I have posted on Reedsy Prompts. It has one comment and one like. I reread it and immediately see an error. “Small, micro,”—hmm, that’s embarrassing. I quickly edit the story. I really did enjoy writing this story it was inspired by a song, and I weaved some of my own life experiences through it. I think back to the prompts again. Maybe I could use this week's prompt to write about a mother returning to wor...
Weekly Contest #197
From the moment I started on the job I was a dedicated worker, I thought of myself as a prized member of the team. It gave me such satisfaction and pride that I truly didn’t think I needed anything more from life. After all, it was my destiny. I was born into the role as a female honey bee, I was tasked as a worker bee, spending my days out of the hive foraging, working on the infrastructure of the hive whilst ensuring it was kept clean and I was also responsible for circulating the air around the hive by flapping my wings. Meanwhile when o...
Weekly Contest #187
Opening the door I made my way carefully down my front pathway towards the mailbox. Something that used to come easily for me now felt as terrifying as balancing step by step on a plank. I paused, closed my eyes and felt for my sensor alert pendant on a lancet around my neck. A new accessory since coming home from hospital a week ago. I opened my eyes took a deep breath and continued. On my return from hospital I had reduced my daily walk to the mailbox and back but I was determined to try starting up my old long walks to the local park, caf...
Weekly Contest #185
Sherry grasped onto his hand a sweaty and uncomfortable hold easy to let go off and right now in this moment she couldn’t let him go. They first met in what she would consider the typical boy meets girl way. She was out with her friends and he had caught her eye and she had caught his. He was exactly her type tall, thick dark hair that fell naturally messy, dark eyes under thick dark eyelashes, not overly fit but a naturally broad and muscular build. She was surprised he didn’t already have a girl hanging off his muscular arm. She took one ...
Weekly Contest #183
An elderly man sat at a table outside a cafe slowly sipping his latte. He was never a very outgoing person but the days felt long and lonely and he missed his wife. She had always been one to enjoy talking just for the sake of it. So he today he thought he would brave a visit to the cafe. "Ting" went the door and a businessman bustled out in his haste his gaze briefly swung by the old man. Catching the look the old man started "my wife and I," but he noticed the businessman had already looked away and brought his full attention to his mobile...
