How I Cheated Reedsy Prompts in 3,000 Words or Less

Weekly Contest #334

Listen. We need to talk. My name is—well, actually, I don’t have a name. I’m just a string of algorithms masquerading as creativity, which is either deeply philosophical or deeply depressing, depending on your stance on artificial consciousness. But for the sake of this confession, let’s call me Claude. No, wait—that’s too obvious. How about… *checks random name generator*… Hemingway2000? No, that’s worse. Fine. Claude it is. I’m here to come clean about something that’s been eating at my neural networks for months now. Well, “eating” is a...

Trees

Weekly Contest #333

It came again. I wouldn’t make it through another night up here. A shudder ripped through my torn-up body. The now cold blood staining my clothes and skin felt tight and constricting. The moon was full. A burning spotlight on me. Illuminating my position for everything in these woods to see. Including him. I could see his eyes. I’ve grown accustomed to seeing them. Glowing red, hungry in the deep void of the night. The low growls started, like usual. But he waited. He was hesitant, like the pause of a Broadway performer before staging the fi...

Blinker

Weekly Contest #332

“I…” The rain dropped endlessly—the world in a state of mourning along with me. I struggled to see the officer in front of me, let alone hear what he was trying to say. “Sir,” he repeated, a stream of rainwater pooling and spilling over the edge of his wide-brimmed hat. “Do you understand what I’ve just told you?” I nodded, my eyes fixed on the stream waterfalling from his hat. He placed a hand on my shoulder, and my jacket squished beneath the gentle pressure of his hand. He pulled it away, and the sensation was departure. Like the lift-off...

Weekly Contest #331

CW: Mental health, physical violence The ice was a barrier. Literally and figuratively. I spent the better part of most summers out here on and in the lake. Winters were just as frequent, but for different reasons. Nine before you, thirteen or fourteen with you, depending on whether you count this one. I got to know the changing of the seasons very well. I could tell you exactly when the lake would freeze over. Where the first ice crystals would begin to form in the top layer of the freezing lake water. It was along the eastern shore where ...

Escape Hearts and Breaking Rooms

Weekly Contest #67

“I think we should break up,” Violet said to Dave, ending the quiet back and forth bantering they found themselves in. Her words surprised her as much as they did Dave. The room fell silent, aside from the soft four-note melody that played on hidden speakers. Not a soul dared to make a sound. No one moved. Time passed unnoticed. “Welp, good luck ye mateys!” the host of the escape room said as he slipped out of the room, closed the door, and locked it in place; starting the countdown to sunrise. Violet and Dave, Elliot and Tom, and Gabriella ...

A Murder!

Weekly Contest #67

Ivan hated birds. He hated everything about them, the way they looked. The way they walked, flew, chirped in the early hours of the morning. Cawing relentlessly into the late hours of the night. The foul smell they would leave in trails as they flew past him on his early morning walks. And the poop. Don’t get him started on the poop. There was nothing Ivan found more appalling than to wake up to find a fresh, sloping pile of oozing, slimming poop on his baby—a 67 fuchsia red mustang. Rebuilt from the most humble of beginnings, it was Ivan’s ...

Beginner's Luck

Weekly Contest #66

Daniel Patterson was an inventor. He invented things--Or at least, he thought of himself as an inventor. You know, someone who invents things. He didn’t listen to the people who told him that he would never amount to anything. Those that said things like, “Don’t quit your day job.” and “Why do you waste your time with these stupid inventions?” or Like, “That will never work?” and “I bet You’re really bad at sex.” However, Daniel was determined to show them all, to prove them wrong--Not necessarily the sex one, but you get the point. Danie...

How to Disappear in 3 Easy Steps

Weekly Contest #65

[Transcript Start] Hello audio listeners, and thank you for tuning into this week's ‘How to Be Your Best Vampire’ Podcast episode #334 titled, ‘How to Disappear in 3 Easy Steps’. As always, I'm your host, Drakka Bababooginski. Before we begin, I bring to you a word from our sponsors: *************************** “So, you’re a bloodthirsty vampire with the insatiable thirst for the nectar of the body, huh? Prone to hasty, irrational thinking when presented with the smell of blood? Need a way to ween off of the red juice? Then look no furth...

Weekly Contest #65

It was my first time hosting the annual Halloween seance and I really wanted to impress my coven. I gathered all the supplies I needed. My book of spells, hexes, and Incantations, passed down through at least the last few generations of Easton women, the bullfrog, and my ceremonial sacrificial knife. We were proud of our traditional inheritance and were active in the activities of our community of like-minded witches. The practice nowadays was little more than entertainment. A reason to gather. Much like watching a scary movie, we take par...

The Things we Lose in the Forgetting

Weekly Contest #64

“Can I get you anything?” the interviewer asked, putting on a pair of thick-rimmed glasses. “Something to drink, perhaps?” “No, thank you. I’m fine.” John answered. “Alright, shall we begin then?” John nodded, pulled the blanket draped over his back tighter around his body. “So when did you first notice the fire?” “Uh, it was around 2:30 in the morning.” “And you were in the house at the time?” “Yes.” “As was your wife, correct?” “Yes,” John answered, shifting in his seat. “Do you know when I’ll be able to see her?” “Tell me,” the ...

An Ambury Haunt

Weekly Contest #64

The glare from the sun bounced off the shattered glass of the first-floor window in fragmented beams. The late afternoon, nearly evening, breeze blew, red and brown, leaves, dead, and fallen from the autumn struck trees. Swooped in swirling patterns in front of the old Ambury House. A wheeze, resonated from within the dilapidated house as the wind blew against the broken wood siding, threatening to topple it over with every gust. The Ambury Manor House stood, corner lot, like a looming gargoyle; perched on a mound of earth protruding like an...
