Weekly Contest #372
There I was, lying in bed. There was this incessant noise. Kinda loud, and I couldn't figure out what it was, or where it was coming from. Beep, Beep, Beep, Beep, Beep. Continuous. The noise was not even thinking about stopping, not that noises can think. I am beginning to find it really irritating, and it is starting to bother me. I didn't know it at the time, I did figure it out later, but I was in that sleepy dream area where you can think, but are really half awake. Or half asleep, depending on your point of view. I have found this state...
Weekly Contest #369
My Grandfather, Walter, had passed away last week. 84 good years. After the burial, Grandma had asked us to come by in a few weeks, and help clear out the house she and Grampa had lived in. She was going to go live in a retirement home, something she had wanted to do for years. She only stayed with Grampa because he didn't want to go there.. No one really looked forward to it, we knew it would bring up memories of him, and that we would again be sad we had lost him. The house wasn't dirty, for we all had been taking turns coming over every f...
Me life hasn't been a walk in the park by any reckoning. Abandoned by me da, after me mum died when I was 10. Lived in the workhouse til I turned 16, when I was kicked out onto the street. Father Mulroy had locked me in a closet for three days, the usual punishment for any act they felt was against their rules, written or not. Had to get some revenge, so i started a fire in the meal room, I did. They was forever bothering me to work for my stay, but work was beneath me. I have lived on the street ever since, surviving by me wits, if you plea...
Weekly Contest #354
Consequences I was working as a jack of all trades at the local Homeless shelter. The place started life as a motel, but gave in to economics, and took guaranteed county money to stay in business. It definitely isn’t run down. The owner, Clark, warned me about a local who picked on the motel residents constantly. “Watch out for a guy named Frank Butler. He has a problem with this facility, and the people in it. He has terrorized more than a few of the residents here, some have been hurt so much, and so often, that they won’t go places where ...
Weekly Contest #349
The Campbell's had rented a farm for several years, and it was having another great year. Their crops had always done well, year in and out. Their garden's success had let them send some as rent to the Landowner, and sell plenty at various markets. Peas, beans, leeks, onions, plus Walnuts and Hickory nuts from their trees, butter and cheese made from the cow's milk. This extra money was saved. However, the family realized they would just be subsistence farming-never getting ahead, and most likely falling behind if they did not have the good ...
Weekly Contest #334
Someone dies in this story Today I was in court for kids. it has another name I don't understand and can't spell. I didnt understand most of what was said, but I found out later i had a lawyer, and I was given a social worker, Miss nancy. She says I have to write what she called an essay with my thoughts. I couldn't spell the other word she used, something about water and being awake. I asked her what the essay was to be on, she said to just write things that have happened to me, that the court is looking for a full page a week. She told me...
Weekly Contest #331
We were looking at another cold, grey day, and it was already snowing very lightly at 7 am. We were wondering if it was really going to snow for real, the 10 inches the weather people claimed. Looking at the sky, looking in shaded areas to see if there was any accumulation. It was the end of January, and it sure felt like snow. For those of us with more than a few years of experience had a feel for snow possibilities. It can’t be too warm, say, over 30 degrees, or too cold- below 20 in central Maryland, anyway. You watch the weather forecast...
Weekly Contest #329
Someone gets killed War My family was cleaning up the house where our grandfather, George, had been living with his wife, Grace. He passed away last month, at the age of 84. After the burial, Grandma had asked us to come by in a few weeks, and help clear out some things. No one really looked forward to it, we knew it would bring up memories of him, and that we would be sad we had lost him. The house wasn't dirty, for we all had been taking turns coming over every few days and helping them out, for years. Cooking, cleaning, keeping medication...
Weekly Contest #326
My university has had a long term archaeology and anthropology research mission to Mexico, specifically in the areas between Mexico City, and the Yucatan peninsula. We have been searching historical sites, pyramids and known abandoned cities, for information on Aztec and Mayan cultures. This work is done in conjunction with the Mexican Government, who retains any relics found, my university gets pictures, research, and a sense of saving a bit of history. This year's trip, slated for summer, was spearheaded by me, Dr James Thompson, Professor...
Weekly Contest #321
It was my weekend to visit my grandfather. I exaggerate a bit, because it's just me and him now. Both my parents died in a car accident when I was 10, and “Pops”, took me in. We grieved my parents together, since he lost a son and daughter in law, I lost both parents. I learned a lot from Pops. He taught me how to behave in many situations, helped me with schoolwork, had me help him around the farm, taught me many practical tasks like woodworking, house maintenance, plus hunting and fishing. He kept me busy enough it kept my mind of the lo...
Weekly Contest #318
One day, one of my regular laundromat customers, Pete, and I got to talking. He owned a bar- Domingo’s, just down the street and wondered if I would be interested in bartending a few days a week for him. He spoke of how he always saw me at the laundromat-he often brought tablecloths and napkins to wash and dry- and was impressed by my work ethic. We talked about job hours, responsibilities, and any fancy drinks to learn. He said they served nothing fancier than beer and straight liquor. If someone had the nerve to order a martini, or Pink La...
Weekly Contest #315
The weather forecast was for 8-10 inches of snow. The supervisor, Joe, told our crew to be ready to be at work for a few days, including staying overnight the next day or two if needed. We were being sent home at noon, and told to return at ten that night, with extra clothes, food and drink. We had already made sure all snow equipment was hooked up and ready to go. One of the foremen, Dave, was not happy. If we stayed overnight, he would be celebrating his birthday at work, instead of at home. But, when we got to work the next day, Dave was...
Weekly Contest #314
The group of us arrived at the beach in the second week of what was turning out to be an extended heat wave. The house we rented had 4 bedrooms, a huge living room. The kitchen was separated from the living room by a breakfast bar. There was even a canal behind the house that led to a bay. Huge widows walk the length of the house, on the roof, great for sunset watching. It had to be one of the hottest weeks of the year, in what turned out to be at least 10 weeks of temps 15 degrees hotter than normal for the area. For the last two weeks, ni...
Weekly Contest #313
People die in this story My name is Charlie. I’m living at a motel, really a homeless shelter, with my mom. I started working there a few years ago as a volunteer, cutting grass, and helping the regular maintenance man, Clark, by doing odd jobs and mowing the grass. Clark showed me how to start and use the mower. There is no working pool, one of my jobs is to keep the gate locked, and the pool covered with a tarp, and check it daily. The volunteer bit was court ordered, after some trials I was involved in. I have been working here for three...
Weekly Contest #311
CW: Contains themes and/or references to includes references to drug use, domestic abuse, and violence. It started with a package sent to my address. I'm not certain why it wasn't in the mailbox, since it would have fit. It was left on the covered front porch. Unfortunately, it didn't have my name, Mary Johnson on it, just my address, so I put it aside on a chair to give to the mail lady when I saw her. Later, I wondered when that might be, since I have never seen her outside of the right-side driving mailvan. In fact, there have been numer...
