Rachel Wright

Rachel Wright – Editor

Energetic editor specializing in nonfiction, academic, and reference texts. A decade of experience with The New Press, PRO-ED, and more.

Overview

I have a PhD in English and a decade of experience copy editing and proofreading for academic/reference publishers including The New Press, Routledge/Taylor & Francis, GALE/Cengage, CRC Press, and PRO-ED.

I'm a full member of ACES: The Society for Editing and the Association of Writers & Writing Programs.

I am a well-rounded editor who looks beyond simply correcting errors to ensure that your work shines while retaining your unique voice and perspective. I offer two levels of edit: standard and heavy.

Standard copy edits and proofreads include the following services:

- Correcting errors of spelling, grammar, punctuation, etc.

- Enforcing consistency across your entire book based on your own style and voice

- Reference editing: Ensuring that information is properly cited or referenced, according to your project's needs

- Formatting: Ensuring that manuscript formatting is clear and consistent

- One round of reasonable revisions and implementation of query responses

Heavy edits also include:

- Reading the text carefully for clarity, tone, and effectiveness, suggesting improvements via query and implementing them at your discretion

I work very closely with clients, striving to keep them updated as the edit or proofread progresses. This includes:

- Sending samples twice during the editing process (near the beginning and at the midpoint) to ensure that my work meets expectations

- Keeping a detailed style sheet explaining all editorial decisions, which allows clients to see what has been done to the manuscript at a glance (I send this along with sample materials and the final edit)

- Querying major changes or issues as they come up, so that we can address them early on

I do *not* perform the following services:

- Ghostwriting

- Fact-checking

- Developmental editing

- Though I flag potential legal issues when I come across them, I am not a law expert, so my edit should not be considered an exhaustive review for potential libel, defamation, plagiarism, or other legal liabilities

If all of the above sounds like what you're looking for, I'd love to discuss how I can help you make your book the best it can be.

Asking someone to edit my first book was always going to be nerve wracking. Beforehand, I didn't fully understand what the process was, nor how long it might be or what to expect. Rachel was excellent at handling my nerves and expectations. We had an initial Zoom meeting, where I was able to ask plenty of questions as well as explain a bit about my project. She followed that meeting up with a h...

Rachel is a meticulous editor with an organized approach to her work. At the same time, she is very accommodating. She will get a sense of your writing style and work preferences from quickly turning around a first segment of the manuscript and will adjust if needed. She is always friendly and professional in her communication. She weathers unexpected snags, is forgiving of changes of mind, and...
