Ben Tallon

Ben Tallon – Designer

Illustrator, art director, and hand lettering specialist working with Bloomsbury, Penguin, Hachette, The Guardian, and The New York Times.

Overview

I create lively, energetic, organic work with a strong sense of human vulnerability. My range is wide, from softer watercolours and elegant line drawing right through to loud, raw collage and hand-lettering. This all depends on the tone of a book or story. I've worked at the highest level worldwide as an illustrator for 18 years and look to take on projects with the right balance of author input and my creative license. I'd never be too controlling, but also do not accept briefs where I am brought a finished idea without room for my consideration. The creative process must be shared between the author and the artist to get the best result.

I create full covers (back, front, and spine if print) and also internal illustrations from chapter headers to double-page spreads.

Rounds of amendments will be stipulated and agreed upon before any jobs are signed off. This protects both parties from challenging working relationships and is standard industry practice.

I'm also a writer and author, and books are my greatest pleasure, so you're in good hands as both a complete book nerd and professional!

Then Ben took it upon himself to get to know the story by reading the manuscript, and he sent me some v...
