Poor Melvin is done for. He’d planned an exciting night, but ended up fighting for his life instead. Melvin should have never given into the temptations of the Flesh. How did it come so far?
It starts out innocent enough: one day boys will play with their sister's doll, and start dressing it up. From here on they'll brush its hair, paint its nails, and give the doll smokey-eye makeup. This behavior comes naturally to young boys and is a consequence of seeing their first goth girl at the checkout line. Naturally, they are heartbroken. Why? Because the advances they make towards the girl are met with shattering rejections. Thus, the young boys desire control and the dolls are a means to an end. When they reach their twenties, that's when things get complicated: they buy bigger and louder play dolls.
Submitted for your approval, one Melvin Sugarbush. A young male, in his twenties. Melvin is a loner with a passion for sword and sorcery books and movies. He has few friends; one friend. His family loves him but wished he'd didn't spend so much time locked up in his room. Melvin is the proud owner of Lidia, a state-of-the-art Fleshy. She comes, oh heavens, with all the bells and whistles.
Melvin Sugarbush, inspired by heroic stories of wizards and barbarians, dark spells and demonic summons, wants to bring Lidia to life. He wants more than a physical relationship. Melvin yearns for a real girlfriend, someone to share his tastes in books and hobbies. He chooses this night, when his parents are gone for the weekend. Sinister thoughts plague his brain, twisting his mind to perform an unspeakable act: sacrificing his only friend so Lidia can awake. He invites Cooper over under the false pretext of watching a movie. The trap is sprung.
“You god-damned manic! You cut me!"
“I have to, I need your blood for the ritual to work. Soon Lidia will join the living and we'll be together forever."
“Christ, this really stings."
“Sorry, I never wanted to go that deep. I'll get a bandaid."
“Get two, look at the size of this thing. It's like two or three centimeters long. Why didn't you use your own blood?”
"Blood magic requires the blood of another. It's in the codex, stupid."
“If you wanted to roleplay, you should have told me to bring my robe. I mean, it's pretty cool to use real blood for the game session–”
"No games, Cooper. I'm doing the real deal. I'm going to perform the Soul Binding Ritual on Lidia for realz. Being a higher level spellcaster you must obey my command.”
"You're serious? Melvin, those are just stories, they aren't real. Those spells won't work, they're make-believe. I think we should take a break from game nights, get your head straight.”
“Trust me, it will work. We just have to follow the rules exactly. Help me set up the circle and light these candles."
“What about my hand? I'm still bleeding."
“Good, good…”
Melvin and Cooper get busy with the ritual. Using his friend's blood, Melvin draws the spell on Lidia, and chants the words over and over again. Cooper performs his role as instructed. Hours pass, but they keep at it. Suddenly, right before the crack of dawn, something exciting happens. A knock at the door snaps the boys out of their concentration.
“It's probably nothing," Cooper sais but Melvin isn't having it. Carefully, they creep downstairs, fearing Melvin's parents came home early from their trip. But, to their surprise, they find a visitor sitting on the couch. A middle-aged man, wearing armor, holding a glowing staff, waves for them to sit down.
“Don't be afraid, Melvin and Melvin's friend. I'm here only to congratulate you on your journey into all things magical. Perhaps you're wondering why my words don't unsettle you; it's because you are under my spell, so you won't do anything foolish and hurt yourselves. Where was I– yes, congratulations to you Melvin, Champion of Champions. I'm proud to see the ancient spark of magic has made its way to this timeline as well. But as I'm about to show you it has its price if left unchecked. Something else has made its way to you, because of your lineage. We must protect all threads of time for now, until we reshape it in our image, Melvin. Fear not, you are safe with me.”
As he speaks, the battlewizard dashes for the stairs. Lidia's Fleshy body is moving at lightning speed, no doubt possessed by any number of demons. An epic battle erupts, with bone-shattering hand-to-hand combat and thunderous spellcasting. The doll's body struggles to stand, missing several limbs. With a word a power, the wizard banishes all entities from Lidia, leaving behind the lifeless silicon dummy. All this time, Melvin and Cooper calmly watch from the comfort of the couch, under the effects of a blissful spell.
The battlemage says his goodbyes and disappears into a portal. Melvin and Cooper snap out of it.
“What the hell happened here? My folks are gonna kill me when—Lidia?! Oh, no…”
“Jeez, look at that. The circuit board must be fried and the whole thing caught fire. And probably exploded, or something. Who are you calling?”
"Customer support, they must be able to fix her somehow. Oh, Lidia, hold on, my love."
"Love? It's just a doll. I'm saying it as your friend."
"You are a fool. Some things are hidden from sight and reveal themselves only to those deemed worthy. The path to great– hello, is this… Dammit, it's the machine."
“What's wrong?"
Melvin's eyes glinted. He whispers:
“Rituals, of course."
