SHADOW SYNDICATE NO KING ALLOWED

Funny Kids Mystery

Written in response to: "Write a story from the POV of a monster, infected creature, or lone traveler." as part of From the Ashes with Michael McConnell.

This is the story of the Shadow Syndicate, a group of elite thieves living in the neon crime city of Nebulon Noir—a place where even shadows don’t trust each other. In this city, everyone has their own style, their own tricks, and their own secrets. Trust is rare, and loyalty usually lasts about five minutes.

There’s King Vexor, a dramatic and power-hungry thief who dresses like he already rules the city. His armor is sharp, his glowing crown never turns off, and he loves giving speeches more than actually doing the job. If confidence could steal money, he would already be the richest man alive.

Then there’s Glitch, the genius hacker. Always surrounded by floating screens and holograms, he speaks in logic and calculations. He can break the most advanced security systems in seconds… but sometimes forgets basic things like eating or sleeping.

Velvet Hex is calm, mysterious, and impossible to fully understand. Her illusions are so real that even she sometimes looks like someone else. When she smiles, it usually means something confusing—or dangerous—is about to happen.

Snaptrick is fast, funny, and slightly annoying—in a very impressive way. He can steal anything, anytime, and still find time to make a joke about it. If something goes missing, it’s probably already in his pocket.

Whisperbyte is small, silent, and always listening. No one really knows where Whisperbyte is at any moment… but somehow, Whisperbyte knows everything about everyone.

And finally, Nova Shade—quiet, observant, and always thinking. Nova doesn’t rush, doesn’t speak without reason, and understands situations before they even fully happen.

In Nebulon Noir, crime wasn’t just something people did—it was survival. Neon lights reflected on wet streets, and every alley felt like it had eyes watching you.

Deep beneath the city was The Void Vault, a massive underground dome where the best thieves gathered. No leader. No rules. Just skill, respect, and silence.

Until one night… everything changed.

A figure jumped onto a broken throne.

It was King Vexor.

His cape moved dramatically (maybe a bit too dramatically), and his glowing crown lit up the entire vault.

“Enough chaos!” he shouted.

Snaptrick whispered, “We literally live in chaos…”

“Enough hiding in the shadows!” Vexor continued.

Glitch sighed. “This is going to take a while.”

Then Vexor raised his hand proudly.

“From this moment… I AM YOUR KING!”

Silence.

Long silence.

Very long silence.

Snaptrick looked around. “Is this serious?”

Velvet Hex smiled slightly.

Glitch adjusted his goggles like he was watching a show.

Whisperbyte stayed hidden, quietly listening.

Then slowly…

“Sure… King.”

Everyone agreed.

Too easily.

And that… was the first mistake.

That same night, far away in a quiet dark alley, the real meeting began.

Glitch projected a glowing plan in the air, lines and symbols moving fast.

“Step one: break his system.”

Velvet Hex added, “Step two: confuse his reality.”

Snaptrick grinned, spinning a stolen key. “Step three: take everything… and maybe leave him a ‘thank you’ note.”

Glitch looked at him. “No note.”

“Fine,” Snaptrick said, “but I’m thinking about it.”

From above, Whisperbyte whispered, “He suspects nothing…”

Snaptrick smiled wider. “Even better. I like easy jobs.”

Days passed.

Vexor started acting like a king.

Walking slower.

Talking louder.

Giving orders nobody followed seriously.

He even practiced speeches alone, adjusting his crown like it needed more drama.

Meanwhile—

Everything around him slowly started disappearing.

Glitch quietly broke into his systems, changing access, removing control, and locking Vexor out of his own plans.

Velvet Hex created fake allies who agreed with everything Vexor said. Sometimes, Vexor even thanked people who didn’t exist.

Snaptrick stole keys, codes, and small items just for fun.

At one point, Snaptrick walked past him and said, “Nice speech,” while removing a hidden key from his armor… and Vexor didn’t even notice.

Whisperbyte listened to every word Vexor said—every plan, every mistake, every overconfident thought.

One time, Vexor said, “Everything is under control,” and Whisperbyte quietly whispered back, “No… it’s not.”

Vexor trusted everyone.

That was his second mistake.

Then came the grand night.

The celebration.

Lights filled the Void Vault. Music echoed. Everything looked perfect—exactly how Vexor imagined it.

“My reign begins tonight!” he shouted proudly.

Snaptrick clapped slowly. “Beautiful speech. Very powerful. Slightly unnecessary… but impressive.”

Velvet Hex gave a soft smile.

Glitch checked something on his hologram.

Whisperbyte stayed silent.

Then—

CLICK.

Darkness.

Complete silence.

No movement.

No sound.

For a moment… nothing existed.

Then the lights came back.

Everything was gone.

No guards.

No throne.

No treasure.

Even some walls looked different.

Just Vexor.

Standing.

Alone.

“…this is not part of the plan,” he said quietly.

From the shadows, figures stepped forward.

Velvet Hex: “You were never king…”

Glitch: “You were just the easiest system to break.”

Snaptrick: “Honestly, we expected more effort from you.”

Vexor looked around, confused and shocked.

“You planned this… together?”

Snaptrick laughed. “Of course. We’re thieves… not followers.”

Vexor stepped back.

For the first time… he had nothing to say.

And just like that…

King Vexor disappeared into the darkness.

Not defeated.

Not destroyed.

Just… stolen.

Time passed.

The Void Vault returned to silence.

Same shadows.

Same whispers.

Nothing changed.

Or so it seemed.

Then came Nova Shade.

Nova stepped forward slowly.

Looked at the empty space where the throne once stood.

A thought appeared.

“I could lead them…”

For a moment…

Nova imagined it.

A throne rising again.

Power.

Control.

Everyone listening.

Then—

Nova stopped.

Because Nova noticed everything.

Glitch was watching carefully.

Velvet Hex was smiling slightly.

Snaptrick was waiting, almost expecting it.

Whisperbyte was listening… already knowing.

The same pattern.

The same beginning.

The same ending.

Nova’s eyes narrowed.

“…this is exactly how it begins.”

Nova stepped back.

Into the shadows.

No speech.

No crown.

No mistake.

No one said anything.

Because everyone understood.

In Nebulon Noir…

Power doesn’t make you stronger.

It makes you a target.

The throne stayed empty.

Covered in darkness.

Waiting.

Watching.

Final Line:

In a world of thieves… the smartest one is the one who never tries to become a king.
