Fiction

Written in response to: "Write a story from the POV of a pet or a loyal companion." as part of Two's a Crowd with Kirsiah Depp.

I love butter and my best friend Cally. The owner human got us a new scratch pad. He takes care of us. He gives us food and water. And also butter sometimes. I can tell he is going to give us butter when he is opening a packet of bread. So, Cally and I go and stare at him.

We have a new human in the house. Seems interesting. Wonder what she is doing here. "Now we have two humans in the house, did you see that, Cally?" I looked at Cally scratching her nails on the scratch pad.

"I did, Casper, and I am scared of the new human so I am going to stay under the bed most of the time", replied Cally in a scared voice, and went under the bed.

Cally's plan doesn't interest me. I am going to the living room to sniff her. She doesn't like me getting too close, I can see that. I'll probably sit on the carpet and stare at her. Will she stay or go? I guess we will have to see.

She always sits on the corner of the sofa. And keeps looking outside the window for a long time.

Ahh my back feels scratchy, let me scratch some on the carpet. Scratch scratch scratch. I'm bored of looking at her, so I am going to nap. I hear sniffles, is that Cally? Let me put my head up. Wait, it's her — the new human. Is she throwing water from her eyes? She looks different, like how Cally and I feel when we need food or playtime. I will go and headbutt her legs and see if she feels better.

I know you're looking at me; I can headbutt you more. I hope you feel better soon. I see you touched me with your finger. Maybe you haven't seen somebody like me before? You can touch me if you like. I guess you don't want to right now. I will be back soon.

"Hey Cally, do you think something is not right about the new human? The human who feeds us seems fine, but the new human seems different, like she won't purrrr?"

"Yeah, I think so too, Casper. I can sense it but I am too scared right now to go and be friends. You can try."

"Okay, I will. But right now, I need food. I'll go scratch the door to catch attention."

I didn't sleep at all last night. I wanted to play. Now I feel like sleeping but I am also curious to see the new human. Let me go check on her.

Her eyes still contain water. Doesn't she have a friend like Cally? She doesn't seem alright to me. Let me sniff her. She smells nice and warm but I smell fear. Maybe she is still scared of me.

I will sit on the carpet and look at her again.

Sun has gone up and down many times, many birds have flown by but the human is still throwing water. I wonder if she is getting enough food. The owner human doesn't seem to be home. Let me go and sit beside her on the sofa.

She looks at me a lot and likes it when I sit next to her. I will do that more. She even touched me; her hand feels like my furry bed. Warm. I like smelling her socks. I pick up socks from her shoes and take them to Cally. Cally enjoys biting the socks.

Sun has gone up and down many more times and I see the human is throwing less water. Let me ask Cally if she wants to go sniff her.

"I think I'm ready. I am not scared anymore. I'll sit around her for a while on the carpet."

I see Cally looking at her and the human looks back. I nudge Cally onto the sofa beside her. She feels like the furry bed again, so we sleep next to her. The human doesn't sleep very much — her eyes appear dark and don't sparkle.

Today we slept with the human. We enjoyed it so we purrrrrrrred a lot. I think she likes me. She doesn't throw water anymore.

I don't see the sun anymore when I look outside — the sky is throwing water now. The new human picks me up and loves me. So, I love her back. We play catch the mouse. I sleep on her during nap time. She even gives me food when I am hungry and water when I am thirsty.

Today I see the human with a big box. Like the ones I sit in. She is putting things in it and I sit next to her. But I don't want to purrrrrrrr. I sense she is going. She keeps putting more things in the box.

Sometimes she makes me sit on top of the moving box and gives me a joy ride. Everything looks different from up high. The box is closed now and stands near the door. She doesn't give me any more joyrides. She came to my room and rubbed her face against mine and Cally's. Then she took the box and went outside the door.

I sat on the carpet and looked at the sofa. It looked empty. But still I kept looking at it. Then I went to the window to see a flying insect. The sky stopped throwing water but I feel cold. The owner human keeps the house warm, but the new human is not here. I don't go and sit on the sofa. I stay in my room. I cuddle with Cally and sleep. I watch birds and insects from the window. I eat and sleep. I found a sock the new human left behind. It smells just like her.

Cally and I play in the middle of the night. We like to sleep when the light comes. We keep sleeping in the light. Today I went to the sofa and sniffed. The smell of the new human is still there. I didn't stay too long on the sofa because it reminds me of the human.

I go and lie down next to Cally, she is my best friend.

"Cally, do you think the human will come back???", I asked Cally.

"I don't think so, her box was so big, seems like she is going to a new home"

I did not like what Cally said but i am also hungry, so i went to my food bowl and ate.

The sun went down and the owner human left in the dark. I ran to the door but he just looked at me and closed it. I felt tired soon after, so I napped.

I woke up suddenly. I heard the door open and smelled the owner human. But I smelled another human too. I went outside and sniffed her. She is the same human who used to throw water. Smelling her gave me joy, so I purrrrrred. She lifted me up and put her mouth on my skin — it was a bit much, but I let her do it.

Sun is going up and down again. I sleep and nap with the new human. Her eyes are not dark and she doesn't throw water. She shows me birds on a big box sometimes. These birds seem different from the ones outside — when I touch them, I only touch the box. It's magic. The new human also gives Cally and me butter.

Life is good.

This is incredibly sweet, but what makes it work for me is that Casper never fully understands what's happening.

He doesn't understand grief, heartbreak, or loneliness. He only notices that the human "throws water," doesn't sleep well, and seems to need company.

That innocent perspective makes the emotional core land much harder than if it had been explained directly.

I also loved the recurring details—the butter, the socks, Cally's cautious observations, and Casper's unwavering determination to befriend the sad human.

By the end, "Life is good" felt simple, earned, and surprisingly moving.

Thank you so much. Your message was so thoughtful. That is exactly what I was going for, a cat wouldn't fully understand human emotions, but still develops a bond. So glad it landed for you!
