There once lived a wizard named Alan Rame in a kingdom named Farland. He wasn’t a wealthy wizard and lived in a modest home which consisted of a small garden for herbs and spices, and a hut that only had two rooms. Alan wasn’t discouraged by his living conditions as he was happy with his daily routine where he regularly tended his garden and picked herbs when they were ready. Even during bad harvests, he was able to survive by asking the animals of the forest to provide for him in times of need.
Farland was a distant kingdom from its neighbors who were also friendly to each other. The land wasn’t wealthy either and mainly consisted of vast farmlands instead of the factories and mines of their neighbors. The land was also not easy to live in as regular storms and earthquakes made life for the residents difficult, but they survived as they were a hardy people who could rebuild and replant after a difficult year.
One day, Alan went to the forest with a request to his animal friends. As he approached the forest, a group of squirrels arrived to greet him and asked him what he needed from them. “I have been thinking about my brother,” he said to the squirrels, “he had passed away about four years ago, and I was thinking about the time potion that has long been rumored to exist in these lands.”
The squirrels thought about their answer before telling the wizard what they knew. “My friend,” they said, “the rumors are true, but the journey will not be an easy one.” “There is a diamond deep in the lands of Farland, but the journey will be treacherous. Also, we do not know very much about this mysterious diamond, and its effects on people are unknown. We ask that you do not seek this item as it could endanger you.”
After hearing what they said, Alan thought about making the journey despite the warning from his friends. Finally, Alan told them his answer. “I will make the journey,” he said, “I have planned for a dangerous journey for years now.” “I believe I can make it as I have survived so many of them over the years.” His friends seemed dismayed by his answer, but decided to help him nonetheless.
“The diamond lies deep in the forest,” they said, “you will need to cross mountains and marshes to find it.” “Be careful, it is said that the land itself protects the diamond. We will help you however we can, but we won’t be able to save you if you are in grave danger.” After hearing these final warnings, Alan did not change his mind and began to pack for the treacherous journey.
On an early morning, Alan began his journey through the forest, looking for the dark legend. As he travelled through the forest, the trees themselves seemed to warn him of the journey, with sounds of the wind seeming to tell him of the dangers that awaited for him and to turn back. “I can do it,” Alan said to himself, “I need the magic of the time diamond.”
As Alan ventured further into the forest, the warnings of the squirrels rang true as the roots of the forest began to attack him. “Nothing that I haven’t seen before,” the wizard told himself. He was able to defend himself from the roots by casting a magical shield that protected him from their lashing attacks. After that, he cast fire magic that burned whole roots to ash. As the forest burned around him, the trees begged him to stop, and the wizard relented. “I am not a killer. I just want the diamond, and after I have it, I will leave.”
With the first set of dangers behind him, the wizard continued into the forest, shaken but unhurt. For a while, everything seemed calm as nothing from the forest came out to attack him, but the wizard remained wary. Suddenly, the mud under his feet arose to grab him. “Magical mud,” said the wizard, “it will try to drag me under and suffocate me.” The wizard then cast a spell, allowing him to fly, but the mud only tried to pull him under even harder.
“If that is the case,” said the wizard, “then I have a spell for that.” The wizard then used earthquake magic, weakening the forest floor and causing the grip of the mud to weaken. “Is this the best you can do to me? If it is, then it isn’t very effective.” The forest howled in pain as the magic continued, and the wizard relented when the mud finally stopped trying to pull him. “Now that is over, I will have that diamond now.”
As the wizard walked out of the forest, he could use the mountain range and the swamp that he was warned about. “They don’t seem too dangerous,” he said, “I have traveled across the world, and I have seen far more threatening lands in my time.” The wizard then casually walked through the mountains, and as he did, demons from the shadows and ents from the swamp appeared to stop him and his journey.
“I have fought these before,” thought the wizard, “and my magic will again defeat them.” This time, the wizard also called for his friends for the forest for help, and the squirrels answered. They ran around the demons and the ents, holding them down or trying to pull them down as the wizard summoned his fire magic to attack them.
“Face my inferno,” said the wizard as fireballs and meteors were shot at the demons and ents. The ents were the first to fall as the fire magic proved to be lethal against them, and they either ran way or were burned. The demons were more determined to stop the wizard and tried to conjure magic of their own, including summoning the undead to attack the wizard.
The wizard was not phased by the arrival of the new enemy as he kept them at bay using his earthquake magic, so that they were unable to reach him. “This is pitiful magic,” he said, “is this the most powerful spell that you can conjure.” The demons heard the wizard, and changed the magics that they were using, and instead, cast dark lighting bolts at him, which he barely avoided.
“Fine,” said the wizard, “if that is what you will use against me, than I will cast more dangerous magics against you. The wizard then invoked one of the most powerful spells that he knew against the demons, which were ice storm magics, causing the demons to freeze to death. His friends, the squirrels, then began to ask him to stop as not only were the demons defeated, but his magic was beginning to harm the environment around him. “I have promised that all I wanted was the diamond, and I will kept that promise.” The wizard then ended the spell and continued his journey to the cave that held the diamond.
The rest of the wizard’s journey wasn’t very eventful as the land no longer had anything that they could use to stop him. As the wizard approached the legendary cave, he marveled at the sight. The caverns were gorgeous, as if they were adorned with rare diamonds and stones. “This place,” thought the wizard, “is like the scene out of the most magnificent of dreams.” As the wizard walked through the cavern, the scenery became grimmer, as if it was transitioning from a scene from a dream to a nightmare. The wizard, however, continued to be unconvinced of the danger he was walking towards.
When the wizard finally reached the diamond that he heard so much about, he marveled at its appearance. The diamond floated in the end of the cavern and emitted a bright blue light that radiated throughout the halls of the cave. The wizard was relieved that his journey was over and approached the diamond, and as he did, it spoke to him.
“Hello traveler,” said the diamond, “how may I help you.” The wizard then told the diamond what he knew about it, and that he wanted to see his brother again. “I can grant you that wish, but you will need to know, it will come at a cost. The more times you revisit your brother, the more harm will come towards you as my magic is poisonous, and if you use it too much, you will perish.” The wizard agreed with the diamond’s proposal, but the squirrels that had followed him into the caves begged him not to do it.
“I have come this far to see my brother again,” said Alan, “and I miss him too much.” “If this is how my story will end, then so be it.” The squirrels continued to beg the wizard to reconsider, but he wouldn’t change his mind. Alan then agreed with the proposals set by the diamond, which then transported him to a time about six years ago where he could talk to his brother again.
“Hello, Eric,” greeted Alan when he found his brother. His brother was surprised to see him again as during that time, he was travelling to a different country. Alan then explained that he had to come home early, because he forgot something. He and his brother then talked for hours, until he had to leave that time period as were the rules set by the diamond. Alan could later revisit that time to talk to his brother again, knowing that doing so would harm him.
On the seventh time Alan revisited his brother, he was in bad shape as he struggled to walk. His brother was shocked when he saw him that way, but Alan made the excuse that he was sick and needed a brief rest at home. The two continued to talk for hours, and that was the last time that Alan could make the trip back in time. His neighbors also never saw him again afterwards.
