The CD

General

Written in response to: "As you check your mail, you notice a letter that makes you stop in your tracks." as part of Second Person.

As you check your mail, you notice a letter that makes you stop in your tracks. That name. That name. You had always prayed that you would never hear of or see that name again. You already know what is in the envelope before you even open it.

A CD. It’s labeled “Long Time No See”. You think this can’t be happening. The last time you and your ex had spoken was two years ago when she had almost killed you. You and everyone that you have ever followed on social media, knows she is crazy. It was when she hacked into all of your socials and texted all of your followers and everyone you followed, “Don’t text this account. This is the account owner’s girlfriend and if I see or hear that you text this account, don’t expect to see tomorrow.”

That is just the beginning. That year was utter hell. The thought of that single year always destroys any good mood you were ever in. Everyone always asked you, “Where is she now?’ “Didn’t she try to shoot you when she saw you with someone else?” “Is she in jail?”

You would always ignore most of the questions but when you started to forget about the whole incident you started replying to the questions.

“I don’t know.” “Yeah, she did do that, didn’t she?” You would force a laugh to hide the fear from the flashback and the remembrance of a gunshot. You feel the scar burn on your shoulder from the memory. And the last question has you confused now.

Wasn’t she in jail, you think to yourself, how did she get out? Someone must have bailed her out. Who in their right mind would bail out a crazy woman?

All the questions swarm around your head when you realize something. You have yet to watch the CD. You open the CD case with shaking hands and take it out. You walk to the living room which has your CD player as you toss the case to the ground. You sit in front of your TV and think.

Is this the best idea? You think, What if it’s a trap? That is very likely. She has tricked you into meeting up with her several times. You are so empathetic and think that maybe she does really love you and she just wasn’t taught how to show it properly. She doesn’t love you. That voice in your head reminds you, and it is right.

You decide that she can’t do anything to you again and you put on the CD. There is no going back now. The TV comes to life and you see her. Her brown hair and brown eyes. Her big eyes that look strange on her small, round face. She looks no different than two years ago, except for one thing. Her eyes look more tired yet scary than they were before. You decide to ignore it and watch the video. You start it.

“Hey hon, how are you? I know it has been a long while and I thought I would say..” She pauses and looks away from the camera as if there was something more interesting behind the camera. “I miss you so much. I know that you will never take me back, after all, I did do some very dangerous and stupid things. So stupid.” She frowns and looks back at the camera and it feels like she is looking straight through you. But something is off.

“I am not saying that I want to get back together, trust me, I don’t.” There is disgust in her eyes but then the disgust is instantly replaced by fear and she looks behind the camera again. “Anyway, I’m so sorry I did all those things to you and I wanted to know if you wanted to go to the park a mile away from your house, but just to talk.” She looks back at the camera as if to plead. Then it cuts off.

What was that you think, that was not a thing she would do. She never apologizes. Ever. You try to think of one time she had ever apologized for the whole year of your relationship and can’t think of any. What is happening?

You decide right then, that you are going to go to the park. You assume that she thought you watch the CD right after it arrived so maybe she is waiting at the park for you. You get on a sweatshirt and some jeans. You have to do this and there is no one stopping you. She may have done a lot of wrong in the past but something is actually wrong. If there wasn’t any sign of trouble you would not go. You just want to know what is up.

Maybe that is her plan. To act like something is wrong so that you will come. But it doesn’t matter at this point because you already have your shoes on and are out the door. You think of what can be happening while you walk.

It could possibly be entirely planned out. She knows how empathetic you are and if she looked like she was in trouble you would come to rescue. It’s just the type of person that you are. And she knows that. You start to think maybe you should turn back but you realize that it is too late. You have arrived at the park, and you see her sitting on a bench, facing away from you. You slowly walk up to her and she stays completely still.

“What is this all about?” You ask. She doesn’t move. “Hello?” You move to face her and that’s when you know why she isn’t moving. She is dead. You gasp and check her pulse. Nothing.

“So? Are you a happy camper now?” Ask a voice behind a tree close by. A very familiar voice. You look toward the tree and then you see him. Your best friend.

“What the hell did you do?” You say in a desperate voice and you look back at your ex’s dead body and then you see it. The puddle of blood on the bench. You feel as if you might faint and your best friend notices and starts to come toward you.

“Stay away from me!” You yell at him when he is about five feet away from you.

“What is wrong with you? I did what you wanted! I killed her! Why are you not happy? You said on several occasions that you wanted her dead. She made you so upset. It took you a year to get over what she did to you. Don’t you remember?” He asks as if you could have forgotten a whole year of your own life.

“Of course I remember. I did not mean that I literally wanted her dead! What has gotten into you?” You ask is desperation for answers. How could he do this?

“I just want you to be happy. I got her address and found her. I broke into her house and made her make the video, saying that if she did what she was told, I would let her survive. I lied.” He smiles with pride as if he just got a medal.

“This is horrible. How are you going to get away with it?” You ask. He may now be a murderer but he is still your best friend.

“Well because of what she did to you, she no longer has any friends because everyone thought that she was crazy. She also doesn’t have any supporting family members because of it. So she has no one that will miss her. I have a hole already dug for her deep in the forest. I won’t get caught. I promise.” He says and before you can stop him, he walks up to you and gives you a hug.

“You better not.” You say. You have the urge to run but his grip is so tight. What is he doing?

“Aren’t you mad?” He asked.

“No, of course not.” You lie. You are less mad, more in shock. Then you feel like. Agonizing pain in your back. No. This can’t be happening.

“Good. I would not want your last emotion you ever feel to be anger.” Was all he said as you fall into unconsciousness with the knife in your back.
