What are you?
Guess.
A coward?
Ha. Not even close.
A theft?
I guess.
Oh I know! A beat down sucker in the dumps?
Where did you get that from?
I don’t know…a heart throb?
You have no clue. But no. That's not what I call myself. I call myself Hood. Well that’s my name. I’m a fox-human. I’m an ancestor of Scarlet, the first fox-human in history. I am a part of the Scarlet Kin, I am more fox than human and I am proud of it. Why am I telling you all of this? Well, I want you to see life from my eyes. Life from me, the one and only, Hood.
Hood stood in front of his bathroom mirror, styling his sandy brown hair to swoop down to half of his forehead with his red jeweled comb he got from his friend, Goldie. Well she was kinda more than a friend, or at least she wanted and tried to be. Though she knew if she was officially his girlfriend, she would get a lot of push back from the other girls who would be so jealous. She was cute, kind, sweet, and adorable, and she always cared for others and maybe one day, they'll be dating. She always needed reminding that she was beautiful and everyone loved her so Hood spent most of his time with her doing just that.
He carefully brushed his sandy gray fluffy fox ears. He was a Swift fox. Built for speed, one of the fastest foxes his age.
Hood laughed to himself as he examined himself. His freckles spread across his face and he had a black mark on his nose that looked like black makeup, but it was permanent. It was the mark for where his fox nose would be if he had a snout.
Girls. Always want to be better than anyone else and have the “best” of the best.
He didn’t mind being girl's center of attention (especially when it was Goldie’s), though it could be slightly annoying (when it’s NOT Goldie’s).
He placed the comb and brush down and gently squeezed the vine of a Starflower. A Starflower plant leaves give off light like a fire. When you squeeze the vine it “turns off” the light, and vice-versa. He shut the wooden door behind him, grabbed his gray backpack, and exited his den.
“Be back Ma!” he called, pouncing on his “Swift” board (he named her Swifty), a wooden board with cool wheels attached. What was it the humans called it? A skateboard? He added more to the board to make it able to roll on the grass though. Don’t ask where he got all the parts from. He did not feel sorry for the human who was missing it.
Coming to a halt, Hood stepped off of his swiftboard then crawled on his hands and knees into the inside of a fallen log on the ground, trying not to be seen by fellow Scarlet Kins. His extra pointed ears could hear the slightest movement.
He left his swiftboard behind and crawled through the log. Popping out on the other side of the log, he smiled. Some logs were like portals to the human world, one second you were in Whispertail woods, and the next, you were in a city filled with nasty no good humans. The human world looked and smelled different. It was slightly smokey but he could also smell all types of meats drifting on the wind. He didn’t mind people gawking at his ears (if someone was really nosey you’d tell them it was a headband), but he did make sure no one tried to catch him.
He patted his rear end, making sure his tail was tucked in his pants.
“It’s go time.” he said, pulling his hood on and stuffing his hands in his pocket. Following his nose, he followed the streets to the nearest meat filled shop.
“Mmm.” Hood whispered to himself, sniffing the air. His ears twitched at all the sounds.
A young teen human passed him and Hood brushed him on purpose, secretly swiping the kid’s chocolate bar.
Hood unwrapped it and munched on it as he stopped in front of the shop. Sometimes he would walk in as a human, and run out as a fox, or just stay a human and steal. He didn’t mind. Hood tossed the wrapper on the ground and slid into the alley next to the shop.
He transformed into a swift fox and slipped through the cracked open side door of the shop.
At first, no one noticed him and he was able to run through the small shop without being seen.
Humans are so bad, how can they not even smell me? I can smell an ant!
Hood spotted five perfect packs of young deer meat, resting innocently on the cool counter. Hood wiggled his bag off his back, waited till the coast was clear and leaped up and snatched the nearest pack.
He pushed it onto the floor and into his backpack with his nose, then grabbed the rest. He used his right canine tooth to zip up his bag and squeezed back under the straps.
“Mommy! A foxy!” a little girl with curly hair pointed, holding her mom’s hand. The girl’s mom gasped.
“You're right!”
He’d been caught!
He sped down the aisle and dashed out the door before they could catch him.
Wow, you're so good at this.
This was always one of his highlights of his day (Other than making girls swoon, but not in a way that harmed Goldie). The thrill of being chased by humans, and escaping every time. Most people would find it weird to see a fox running with a backpack. It attracts attention, something he always loved.
He hurriedly ran to the log and portaled to the other side. He transformed as soon as he was out of the log and pulled off his bag.
This is how he made big bucks, he would try to sell the meat to other teen foxes and keep whatever didn’t sell for himself.
Carrying his backpack, he walked over to his bestsellers house and dropped 2 packs of meat in their mailbox. He did this once a week for this customer.
He pulled the money out of the side of the mail box counting his CC (Canine Cash).
He growled. Only 20 CC bucks? Stealing from humans is work! Well, it was easy for him.
If you don’t pay you don't get the meat.
Hood pulled one pack of deer meat out the mailbox, stuffed it back into his bag and started walking to his school. A lot of his friends had school activities over the weekend, and they probably wanted a snack break.
He passed by a group of girls who giggled and waved at him.
Hood smiled and tossed his hair at them then hurried his pace, leaving them giggling to themselves.
Hood entered the main building of the school, walking past all of the wooden lockers. The halls were mostly empty, and there weren't many students hanging around. That’s what Hood thought until he turned the corner he coiled with a boy with spiky red hair.
“Watch it, Crosseyed!” Hood snarled, getting back to his feet.
“Sorry Hood! Didn’t see you there.” Rudy replied shrugging, his mischievous eyes (which were definitely NOT crossed) scanning the hallways and his mind elsewhere.
Hood sighed. Rudy didn’t really like him. Rudy was best friends with Goldie and Apricot and it sometimes felt like they were both competing for Goldie.
Wait, if Rudy is here that means Goldie is too! What are they doing here? None of them are in any after school clubs…
“Well….see you later Crosseyed.” Hood said, pulling his bag on his shoulder and turning to walk away.
Rudy rolled his eyes, nodded and started walking away.
“Wait…Is that meat I smell?” Rudy said, his nose wiggling. “Is it…deer?”
Hood flinched. “Yes but you can’t have any.”
“Hpmh.” Rudy said, turning and scrambling a few feet away.
Hood sighed. That was close.
“Also,” Rudy called over his shoulder, “I think you win this one. Goldie would not stop yapping about the jeweled comb she gave you.”
Hood laughed to himself. “Ha. Tell her I love it. Her best one yet!”
Hood could hear Rudy grit his teeth and feel his heat radiating from a few feet away. Of course Goldie would take that as an “I love you” even though he said “it”.
“And, try not to be too jealous? I don’t need kids interrupting my future wedding.” Hood added before leaving Rudy standing alone in the hallway with his back turned to him.
He was practically glowing.
Hood chuckled to himself. Calling Rudy a “kid” would always get under his skin because that's exactly what his parents thought of him. Mr. and Mrs. Crimson were strict and all about business, so was Rudy’s twin, Ruby. And Rudy’s youngest sister, Rosie, was so quiet she didn’t even count. Rudy never got along with his family much (except for Rosie of course). Well, he never got along with anyone really. Except for Apricot and Goldie. They didn’t care that he was “crazy” and weird.
Hood liked that he was an only child. He got the whole house to himself and his parents, who were mostly gone working anyway.
Goldie was also an only child too so they connected easily with their “problems” so to speak.
Sometimes when Goldie was really feeling lonely she would call him on over just because she needed a friend who wouldn’t complain about how their siblings treated them. Just a friend to cling to and sit in silence with. Yes Goldie didn’t mind hearing people yap, BUT she also liked silence. The good kind.
Hood opened the door to one of the classrooms that the students were allowed to use for clubs.
“What’s up Hood-y!” Dean called, chewing on a huge piece of junk.
“Hey guys.”
Dean licked his fox snout (he was transformed for some random reason), “Is that deer I smell?”
“Just thought you guys wanted a snack.” Hood smirked, tossing a pack on the table.
“Wow man, you didn’t have too.” laughed Scoot (the smallest and meanest of the four).
“No you did have too. And uhhh we are grateful. Beyond words.” mumbled Dean, tearing through the package.
“Jeez.” replied Scoot.
“Don’t eat it all!” Theo said, reaching to snatch it from Dean but instead getting his hand snapped at.
“YOUCH!” yelped Theo, recoiling.
“Settle down losers.” Hood laughed ploppling beside Scoot. “What are yall working on?”
Scoot and his gang (Theo and Dean IN THAT ORDER) were always creating and testing things. They were NOT nerds because all foxes have extra creative minds for thinking outside of the box and being, well, sly. They were also some of Hood’s close friends.
Scoot had actually helped Hood with his swiftboard, making it even faster.
“Well…we were working on this thing. Before we were "distracted” by food.” Scoot replied, eyeing Hood suspiciously and scooting farther away.
Dean smirked and continued to devour the meat.
“We-no, I was making-trying too anyway-a mind thingy that takes away memories.” Scoot continued.
“Why?!” gasped Hood, he tried to suppress his horror but it was too clear.
“For the humans.” shrugged Scoot, picking up the unfinished head piece.
“Nah that’s dirty. Not ALL humans are bad-some fox people went to live with them.”
Theo grinned, “Oh we know. And it’s not JUST for humans.”
“Yah yo’ know those no good suck up wol’es.” Dean added chewing with his fox mouth open.
Hood rolled his eyes and stood up. “Yall need better lives.”
He had to make sure that when it was finished (or before), he would "accidentally" destroy it, cause Scoot didn't play…(if he snuck some meat into the parts, Dean would destroy it in no time).
“Cya later.” Scoot said, with a nod, still a little suspicious and watching Hood’s hands.
“Yep.”
“Wait, how's your girl?” asked Dean, licking his paws clean.
“She’s doing great. Ran into Rudy in the hallway. They must be here somewhere.”
Scoot nodded like he already knew information.
“Oh, Hood, I think my little sister has a crush on you now.” Theo’s shoulders were going up and down from laughter.
“Oh yeah?” Hood replied, sighing.
“Yep. When you came over last, she swore you winked at her 5 times and kept looking at her.” Theo laughed.
“Wow. I don’t even know how many freckles she has.” Hood said, rolling his eyes. This whole “thing” was exaggerated sometimes. Some girls who just saw him blink would say it was a wink. And to be honest, he ACTUALLY didn’t even remember what her face looks like or even seeing her the last time he was there. Was she even there?
“That is crazyyy.” Dean said sniffing the air, his whiskers twitching. “Yo Hood got anymore?”
“Nah man that’s enough for you,”
“You need a diet.” Theo and Hood both snickered.
Dean rolled his eyes. “I’m not fat! And for your information, I’m a little under weight.”
“How about over weight?” whispered Theo (of course they all heard it, they were foxes after all).
Hood and Theo snickered again, while Dean smacked them with his tail.
“Okay we got work to do. Unless you want to help?” Scoot said, his eyes closed with annoyance.
Scoot knew full well he didn’t. Not this project at least. A lot of time he would help them look for things they needed from the human world.
“I still have more to deliver.” Hood replied, pulling the door open.
“Bye Hood!” Theo called in after him.
“Hmph. I’m not fat!” Dean muttered to himself. “I’m just a growing man.”
“You’re a man. Haha. And that's what everyone says.”
Hood heard Theo chuckle once more before closing the door behind him.
This was his normal.
Selling meat, hanging with his friends (and his girlfriend) and relaxing (did I tell you he could graffiti really well?). Oh don’t forget about always bumping into Crosseyed.
Hood smiled when he heard a faint laughing sound from one of the other classrooms.
It was Goldie’s laugh.
“Stop joking around you two! This is business.” Apricot moaned.
“Monkey business!” joked Rudy.
He knocked and opened the door.
Goldie ran with a big smile on her face and hugged him tight (He also noticed that Apricot threw a towel over a dry erase board).
Rudy groaned.
Now this was Hood.
