We M.E.T. the Sprung Elephants

Coming of Age Fantasy Fiction

Written in response to: "Write a story in which something doesn’t go according to plan." as part of Gone in a Flash.

"Come on, Eva, I mean Evan, we might miss them," called my youngest sibling: Tina as she as well as my older sister (Maya) flew on ahead of me. I swear sometimes my triplet sisters can get the best of me. I lifted myself up with my own wings and soon enough, came right before them two. We flew through that enchanted forest like it was on the back of our hands.

Maya showed off her skills by twirling around, doing corkscrews and loops. She of course had the biggest grin on her face while doing so. Meanwhile Tina clapped for applause of Maya's antics. As for me, I just had the unimpressive look on my face. Maya tends to get a bit show-offy out of the three of us. Tina, on the other hand, is the most distractful one. Often she dozes off to lalaland and is only interested in stuff that's brand new. In the case for me, I was the most observant and quiet one. I didn't see the need to be a show-off nor have an attention span of a hamster. I was the most logical and realistic out of the Sherlyburp Triplets.

Now, don't get me wrong I absolutely love and adore my sisters. I would do anything for them, and I know they would do the same for me. However, as with any sibling relationship, it's normal to feel like they can get under your skin, either intentionally or unintentionally. Especially my older sister.

Maya was born 3 minutes before I was and she has been the village's favorite. Tina was born 6 minutes after I was and she became the village's little sister. As for me, I was just the middle child who sometimes got the short end of the stick. I, of course, voiced myself but after trial and error, I just let things be. As long as my sisters are happy, then I'm happy too.

We eventually came to the place we wanted to be as the three of us sat on a tree branch. By we, I mean my sisters, but with them being themselves, I volunteered to tag along, just so nothing bad will happen. The destination was a beautiful water hole with a grand waterfall that stretched from one side to another.

There amongst the clear water were the elephants that Tina really wanted to see. But there weren't just any elephants, they were sprung elephants. Their feet, trunk and small tails each acquired an organic spring. They were the most bizarre, majestic creatures you will ever see.

There had to be at least a whole herd of 2 dozen in that watering hole. Some were drinking water from their springing trunks, while others sat down in different positions each other baths. This was their safe haven, and we were intruding their privacy if you ask me. But I didn't say that out loud, cause I know both my sisters would counter say something.

"They look so precious! Oh my goodness," Tina cheered.

"They are certainly incredible, as much as I am," noted Maya.

"Yeah, especially for someone who can stink up the place in order to take a bath," I said before thinking about it.

"Excuse me, Eva. But did I ask you?" asked Maya with a disgusted face.

"It's Evan, Maya. Sorry, I didn't mean to offend you. It was just a joke."

"Well, joke or not. Just next time, don't even bother saying anything and keep it to yourself."

As if on cue, Tina cried out: "Look! LOOK! There's a baby one!"

And sure enough, there was a baby sprung elephant amongst the herd. It was so tiny that anything it would walk, it bounced. It was utterly adorable I must admit. Soon, there came more babies, with two approaching.

"A trio of them!" proclaimed Tina. "I wonder if they are triplets, just like us!"

"They could or they could be cousins," Maya mentioned.

"Those are possibilities or they might be neighbors," I noted.

We watched the three small sprung elephants play for a short bit, however Tina was getting quite antsy. So much so, she started flipping her wings that I had to ask: "Tina, what are you doing?"

"I'm going to ask the elephants if the trio want to play with us."

"Tina, no!"

Before I could even say anything, my youngest triplet went ahead and flew over to the watering hole of sprung elephants.

I quickly lifted my wings and just before I flew, Maya stopped me and asked: "Why just let her ask, Eva?"

"Again, it's Evan. It's completely dangerous. If those elephants see her, they will mistake her for a mouse!"

"I see your logic but mice can't fly."

"We don't know that. This is our first time seeing sprung elephants. Who knows what other species are out there in the world outside of this forest. Plus, have you seen our size compared to these beautiful behemoths."

"I won't let Tina know that they are behemoths if I were you."

"That's not the point, Maya! Please, just stay here while I go get our sister."

"You're not the boss of me, Eva. I'm still the oldest."

"For the third time today, it's Evan, Maya. And with all due respect and love for you as my sister, I only ask of you this favor so you won't be at harm's way."

"You're overacting to this. Tina is going to be completely fine."

As soon as she said it, Tina was screaming bloody murder. Maya and I quickly turned our heads when we saw chaos unfold. There amongst the watering hole, all of the sprung elephants, including the little ones, were bouncing all over the place. I scanned around the area to see if I could spot my little sister. Shortly, I found her still flew under the chaos.

I turned my head to Maya and she was in complete shock. There was no moment to waste. I had to save our little sister from a springing and crushing death.

My wings flew so fast as if they were going to fly off but I didn't care. I needed to save Tina, no matter what the cost. Eventually I came rushing in and sure enough, I too had to navigate from being sprung and crashed.

"These are just like the trees; these are just like the trees." I said to myself constantly. I know that trees don't just grow feet and start bouncing around (to my knowledge), but it was helping me nevertheless. Cause soon, I was back at that forest with my sisters, going around and about the many trees. I thought about what Maya had done earlier in the forest with her showing off, and instead of being prideful, I concentrated on the goal: Tina needed my help.

After traversing and evading all of the chaos, I finally got ahold of Tina. She was scared at first but once she found out it was me, Tina hugged onto me for dear life. "Now, let's get us out of here," I spoke for the both of us.

It took awhile, but after some perseverance and full concentration, I finally flew Tina and I out of the watering hole of chaos. I let us down on the ground, and try as I must Tina won't let me go. She was absolute frightened about the whole thing. My poor sister. I couldn't blame her cause I too was pacified.

Maya came to where we were and I could have sworn she had tears in her eyes. She stood there for a bit. Watching as Tina continues to clung onto me, as if I was going to disappear once she lets go. Eventually, all that Maya could muster was: "I thought I was going to lose you both..."

Now I'm the one tearing as well.
