The Cat's Meow

Bedtime Creative Nonfiction Friendship

Written in response to: "Include a bad omen (e.g., a broken mirror, a dead bird, a black cat) in your story." as part of Signs and Omens.

I remember when she was just a kitten... We used to play in the kennels and rough house each other. Most often times, she will start it. Don't let that cute innocent face fool you. She's a menace, I tell you. A menace! Yet I still love her 'cause she's my sister, no matter what.

We do have another sibling but they weren't so active and always sleep a lot. Our third would have nothing to do with us, but my sister and I were as thick as thieves. We would often chase one another and gave each other love bites once being tagged.

I can't recall how much we were vacay in that cage, but it seemed like forever. We heard the other kittens, even older cats and other animals, including the scary dogs outside of our kennel. There were some nights, the two of us couldn't sleep, even our third.

So many humans come and go in the facility. We couldn't tell you how many we have encountered, but there were a variety of them through those kennel days. Sometimes we would meow for their attention, while other times, we just do our own thing. You know, typical cat behavior. At least the humans with bright colors were always so helpful and welcoming. They would help clean our cages, litter and gives us fresh food plus water.

One day, as my sister and I were doing our typical rough housing, a couple came in and noticed us right away. As if we were the only kittens in the whole wide world. Our third was sleeping without a care in the world as the two adults automatically fell in love with my sister and I.

One moment they were there, the next they were gone. We didn't know what was happening. I thought they loved us or was it some other kitten that was catching their eye. Probably an orange tabby car. Obviously it can't be our third 'cause they didn't show any interest in them, and vice versa.

My sister was a bit nonchalant but she could sense something was stirring in my thoughts process. The next thing I knew she tackles me to the ground, just to clear my senses. And sure enough, it worked like a charm. That couple was long gone from my mind. Or so I thought.

'Cause the next thing that happened, my sister and I were getting carried out of kennel before we knew what was going on. We tried to say goodbye to our third but the hands of these bright color shirts were too quick. Meanwhile our third was just watching and went back to bed.

Now, if you ask me about my sister on her biggest pet peeve would be, it will surely being picked up. She absolutely hates it, especially since she takes time to bathe herself. She doesn't like it when someone messes with her fur. As we were carried, she was a bit displeased while I remained calm and meowed the whole way. Thankfully it wasn't too long but we soon found ourselves in another cage, but a lot smaller.

And now, I was freaking out. I hate being trapped in closed spaces. I was meowing quite loudly and constantly that the two adults we saw from earlier, came into view. The sweet lady of the two reassured us that everything was okay, while the gentleman just smiled, happy as he can ever be. See, dogs ain't just man's best friends.

Anyways, we got carried to some kind of vehicle and we were driving while being placed on the sweet lady's lap. She was a great talker as she would talk to us like her own little children. My sister was also surprisedly calm about this. I think she also senses that we have found our humans.

Eventually, we came to a stop and we were getting dropped at our new home. The gentleman took my sister and I in while handling us to a younger gentleman who was very eager to see us. It also looked like he was just woken up too. Must be a night owl or something.

The two make small talk, and soon enough, we were free to roam around in our new home. While also being supervised but we didn't mind it. The young gentleman who's goes by the name, Sean, welcomed us with open arms and a nice warm lap. He played with us for a couple to few hours. And with all of this built up energy, it certainly requires a well needed catnap. Soon, we also got to meet his little brother so we all can relate to that degree. Siblings do make the world a better place and you'll never feel lonely.

Over the last ten years, we have been with the same family and one new home, much more bigger than the last place. We are very lucky and fortunate that we have four humans who love us for who my sister and I are. One of them, Sean, lives outside of the house but he always gives us the best pets and affection. He even gives us a kiss goodbye as he does with his humans.

I, myself, became a more of a social and affectionate tuxedo cat, while my sister was more Independent, and is only affectionate to certain people, including Sean and obviously mom (she gives out the best tricks). She is also a big fan of shoes, including Sean's smelly feet. Did I forget to mention that my sister is a black cat too? She may be one but don't get it twist that a black cat is a bad omen. None of us, including our beloved humans, would ever think that.

While Midnight (that's the name she was given to over the years) has had her bad days, she'll never be a bad omen. And while she does instigate, act all innocent, and drives me through the wall, she is still my sister. Through thick and thin. I'm living the best cat life with my sister as I am sure she feels in the same way in her own sense.

WRITER'S NOTE: Happy Tenth Birthday to my Fur Babies: Rogue and Midnight! Can't believe it's been a full decade since we got you and I still remember the day you two arrived near the holidays as I was working 2nd shift back then! You both were our Christmas kittens, and I get so happy to see you two anytime I come over to visit the family. The two of you will always be my kittens no matter how old you both get, and no matter how long or far apart we are. Just know that I love you both equally and I thank God you two are healthy well. Here's to another ten years, my sweet babies! Love your human: Sean Sorce!
