The Past Memories Define the Present

Adventure Fiction Mystery

Written in response to: "Write a story in which a character forms a connection with something unknown or forgotten." as part of What Makes Us Human? with Susan Chang.

To look into the past, through a crystal ball or to believe you can know what to look for in the first place.

It will keep you guessing as you use the clues you have collected and pieced together to form a puzzle of epic proportions. It will leave you mesmerized and spell bound in such a way that you will think you actually returned to the past and will try to change the past to equal up with the present, yet the present you are separated from will be different from the one you left behind.

"Who is to say you could do this in real time and still have the same outcome that you had hoped for?" "Who's to say you will want the new present compared to the old one you are no longer a part of?" "Say you arrive at the moment you left only to find out you were lost along the way?"

If you see the new present as it is instead of what it was, things will change, things will have changed and some or most all things will be different, whether for the better or for the worse. An alternate timeline will fill in the void left behind as you crossed space and you will become part of something more sinister than you could ever have imagined.

You will see things as they are in the world of a vast new newness. It will feel the same and seem the same, but the points in between will be spliced and dissected, will be like a whole other parallel, which will turn the reality into a heliographic and unknown mind warp that will have you reaching for the nearest exit to leave.

It will leave you breathless and will have you gasping for air at the nearest oxygen station. You will grab it and will be floating by in a gravity that is lighter than air itself. The planet will have been battered and battle worn from man-made devices and the deconstruction of the many failures of science and engineers of AI.

The new battle of wits will be to see how dumb you can remain as you are arrested for using the ground to transport yourself from one location to another. In a holding cell you will see your Number File (00000000203) be brought up into thin air and revised. First the brain must be removed to put in a thought control mind and brain. While you were waiting, all your past and present memories will be replaced with a synthetic version of your former (long since deceased self), with a newer modern version that can lives longer and will withstand acid and rust from the weather changes taking place outside.

The outside is replaced with a fortified version of a foolproof nonrealistic plastic that is no more real than you are now. Any parts of you that were human, has long since been outlawed and a metallic skeleton and chassis is fitted with a battle armor and assembly of weapons used in the defense of the planet once known as Earth.

Earth was vaporized in 2099, when the new millennium was the end of the former Earth, a human based and human controlled Earth, the one created and designed by an All Powerful being called God or known by many other names. The new Earth is nothing like the old as it was flawed and blemished. So, the new Earth was placed in the location of the former vanquished Earth and from there you arrive at where you are in this time and very location.

You then look at the new version of you and are amazed that you back up sensors can still remember fragments of who you were many centuries ago, yet you have questions never to be answered. You have ideas that will never find a creative place to be discovered or developed. You wish for the things that only humans wish for and know that they are no longer even remotely existing, much less even something worth losing your life over to be thinking about them.

You stand there in the middle of a room filled with identical forms of you. Each one is with a different expression on their faces. Some sad others happy. Some are marred by no face while others are bloated and distorted. These are the mistakes of playing God and trying to create perfection where no perfection exists. It is as though time has never allowed anything without failure or mistakes to be placed in a world AI created and failed to perfect.

Then the air thins out and you begin to breath on your own. You are computing feelings and emotions that were once part of humanity. You cling onto the air hoses and shudder at the ideas of being driven or guided by a no face being who many fear or revere. You cannot make decisions. You are without actual thoughts or awareness. You are made to move even if you objected to move.

You are led to another room, with an open door, you are pushed out into midair and expected to know what to do next. You start to freefall and then the jet pack attached to your back ignites and you fly into the upper atmosphere.

You fly and fly side to side. You slow glide, then quickly thruster glide to who knows where. Seeing that the area is like a city. It is a simulation of a very large city. Like what was known as New York or Los Angeles or even Chicago. It has these beings who are simulations of people. There are so many that you are sure you will find someone who is like you.

Then you try to land but the air current does not allow you to, and you catch a ray beam that allows you to not walk but float into the crowd. There are vehicles and businesses which look like the former Earth never was completely forgotten. There is all this holographic perfect, but it can be plagued by glitches which are always trying to enter into the atmosphere and cause chaos and havoc.

As you near a individual that resembles a female or one that you think is, you are startled awake when you fall out of your bed that you had rolled over too close to the edge.
