To Kill a Giant or Two, Maybe More

Coming of Age Fantasy Fiction

Written in response to: "Center your story around someone trying to resist their darker impulses. Whether they succeed or fail is up to you." as part of What Goes Bump in the Night?.

WRITER’S NOTE: This is a retrospective through the eyes of Pepvin Mace contemplating on how to kill a giant. Passage can be found on Chapter 27 towards “Prince Gabriel of Alladornis”. Some minor spoilers ahead so proceed with caution. Enjoy the reading.

Gerlard transported himself and I to the edge of the Giant’s Valley. From there, we could see gigantic buildings, equipment, and the villagers who resided in the valley. The buildings were wrapped around a much provided huge lake.

Attached to the lake was a river that flows through the northwest given from the mountains and ocean. The giants used this water for everything and anything they would need just as the Swamplanders would use for their river resources.

Upon the village, the two of us can see the Giants treat their buffalo like pets. To anyone, the buffalos looked like a hairy version of a chihuahua in comparison, all thanks to the Giant’s stature.

“Are we planning on burning this village too?” I asked while I looked upon yet another peaceful village. I couldn’t help but think how we would put a fire off given how tall the giants were. They could easily step out any fire and squish us in the process.

“No, my dear boy. We are going to poison the water supply,” replied Gerlard, nonchalantly.

As his young student, I gave my Master a confused look as Gerlard knelt down along the side of the river. “Make here thy source, a poison of one’s force,” chanted the Dark Wizard.

After he chanted the spell, Master stood up from where he knelt. The water from the lake remained the same as it was before. “Now, for your next task. Are you ready, my student?”

“Yes, Master, I am,” I replied, changing my face.

“Good, cause now all I need you to do is kill a giant.”

“Wait, what?” I asked dumbfoundedly.

“You heard me. Do it however way you want to do it, but you must kill a giant from the valley.”

“Okay, Master. I shall do whatever you say,” I said automatically. Instead of asking my Master the questions found in my head, I simply bowed to him.

“Good, now, go! We must make haste!”

“Alright, Gerlard.”

“That’s still master to you.”

“Right. Master Gerlard,” I said as I bowed again, more apologetically.

“Much better. Now, get going!”

I then went on ahead to go do what I was told. It should be mentioned that the two of us were still in their disguises while doing such evil deeds.

I successfully stepped towards the Valley of Giants, without anyone noticing. After walking quite some distance among the tall grass found alongside the river, I stealthy stepped towards the Valley of Giants shortly afterward. As I walked, I could feel the land shake as giants did their daily routines and business.

With the Swamplander’s prediction, that all changed once the Master and I burnt their livestock and village. “But we mustn’t think about that or else Gerlard would do the unthinkable,” I said to my lonesome self.

Upon arrival, I could see the Giant’s flag all marked with a buffalo as their main stronghold and proud animal. The Giants here still stood at about 25-30 feet while others were at least 10, give or take, considering some were the elderly and children.

I was amazed to see these giants all living comfortably in the valley as I was in complete stealth mode. Eventually I came across my first legitimate hiding place, which just as happens to be the first hut I stumbled on thankfully. One of these peaceful looking giants is who I didn’t want to necessarily kill. However, considering I do want to see his loved ones and become the next Dark Wizard, I have no other chance in the matter.

I continued to sneak around the valley looking for a target, at least the easiest one to take care of. When I came behind the fourth hut, I could hear somebody snoozing.

I then went up to the window by climbing up a giant rack of logs and a huge crate all filled with hay. Once I had gotten up to the window, there before me slept a giant upon a huge bed.

The next thing I did was climb down into the hut from the window, and landed myself softly onto the bed. Once I was on the mattress, I slowly came by the giant who was still sleeping. I was trying to figure out a way to kill this giant, considering it would be the easiest to do my task at hand. I know my one and only mace won’t work nor do the trick, especially with the size of it alone.

I desperately looked around the giant’s bedroom and there on the other side of the bed was the sleeping giant’s sword. I walk over there as I proceed to tiptoe around the giant.

After what felt like an eternity, I finally came over to the other side of the bed and reached for the weapon just to touch it. Thank goodness, there’s nothing else to do after doing so. “This manifestation spell is pretty useful and versatile,” I said all to myself.

Once I had touched the sword, I was now able to do his manifesting spell in quick fashion. The sword was there one moment, and the next it was gone. Now, I acquired a second weapon even though this one was quite bigger than I was. The sword had to be at least 8 feet in length.

I turn around and look back at the sleepy yet peaceful giant. Next, I manifest the sword out of thin air above the giant’s chest. I then held it downward vertically as the sword hovered over the giant. I moved to the window as I was placing the sword where I wanted.

Once I was on the windowsill, I quickly pierced the giant’s heart while the giant painfully groaned but came silent instantaneously. I couldn’t help but cry only mentally for what I had done. This was my first murder!

However, I did it; I had killed a giant!? All for the sake of seeing my family and getting more recognition. I quickly took back the sword by having it in my inventory, then headed back to Gerlard with quick haste. Once there, I told my Master about what I have done.

“Job well done, my student,” grinned Gerlard. “I knew you could do it. Now, let’s get going.”

The two of us then disappeared and left the edge of the valley without a trace. I still felt guilty after doing such a cowardly and awful deed, but kept it all to myself. I just need to put it on the back burner or else Gerlard would read my thoughts without permission, which Master tends to do a lot.

Being a student of the Dark Wizard does have perks but is it all worth it in the end when you have to kill innocent people, no matter the size? Unfortunately, I won’t be having any answers any time soon.
