Otterly Altered

Coming of Age Fantasy Friendship

Written in response to: "Your protagonist faces their biggest fear… to startling results." as part of Tension, Twists, and Turns with WOW!.

I woke up finding Slick 47 licking and nudging his head against my face. Sometimes this outstanding otter acts like a puppy and kitten at the same time, I swear.

"What just happened?" I said to my otterly friend as I found myself on the cold floor of my lab of a backyard shed. I don't know how long I have passed out but the last thing I could remember was giving Slick treats of which he was excited for. I also can remember that he gave me a love bite that caused me to bleed a little bit. He was very apologetic about it, all of which I admire and accepted it.

I slowly got up from where I lay and felt completely different. It felt like my feet were constantly shaking. They must have fallen asleep but no, it was just the nerves apparently. My vision is a bit blurry, considering I don't have my glasses on at the moment. But as I stand on my two legs I can feel like they were chain to a ball.

I reach for my glasses which were found on the counter where I last put them. However, even my arms felt like they were getting the short end of the stick. Something was off with my body. I must have slept and passed out on the floor for too long of awhile. I was lying on my stomach so that ought to explain it. Eventually I found out I was wrong, "otterly" wrong...

I finally put on my glasses but the vision of mine was even more blur. What the heck? I know I still have at least a couple of months with these prescriptions. My eye doctor even told me I have a good eyesight after the last visit. So what gives?

I blinked like I was doing a morse code and soon enough, my vision came all at once but somehow altered. Almost not human like.

While I can see clearly, I still feel as if I was underwater submerging. And anytime I blinked, I felt like there was a delay in my eyelid or was I seeing double? What on Earth!?

Something is off; I wasn't feeling 100%. I next walked towards the mirror by the sink and to my surprise, found what what has happened to me.

There upon the reflection, I saw an 5 foot 8 otter, Enhydriodon (bear otter) if you will. Except with some human charactertics which were far and between. Including some clothing that was ripped to shreds, thanks to the unexpected growth and evolution that bestow upon me.

Miraculously, I have turned into this supposed giant otter that was right in front of me. I even had to do a double take to see where Slick was and he was just sitting right behind me, just as confused and concerned as I was.

I bellowed out a yell and even took a temple down back on the floor, same spot expect on my back this time. My outburst even startled poor Slick as he cowered away under the counter.

I sat up and looked at my hands. Even they were changed to be of a otter human hybrid. I can even retract my own claws at freewill.

Next thing I did was touch my face and sure enough I felt adorable yet different than my human self. I felt fur, whispers and even ears lobes on the top of my head. For some reason, I became a wereotter but I honestly don't feel too different than my human counterpart so my humanity was still intact.

With this new foundation, I could help but feel shocked and scared. How am I supposed to even show my face out there like this? Is there a way to change back to my human form in a moment's notice? Or is this a type of thing where I have to wait for a certain time of day to be normal again? Just like in the old fairy tales about were-people...

What will sis Erica think of this!? She can't possibly find out! She'll freak out; worst than I did just now! How am I to explain this phenomenon as well as the secret otter I have found roughly a month ago? She'll flap and I might never see Slick ever again. He's become my true best friend and it would break my heart to see us drift apart.

Before I knew it, I was balling with warm tears through my otterly eyes. I don't often cry as much as I used to as a kid when I was picked on so I can recall when was the last I actually did.

So many unanswered questions laid out for me.

I was contemplating on rather if this was a good thing to happen or a bad coincidence. I just am the type of guy who needed answers right now. I can go on not knowing what was in store for me. The future can be often lead to uncertainty and most times, that scares me.

Soon enough, Slick came by me after I calm down and started to lay on my lap right there and then. He knew it was me, even if I looked like his family.

"Guess we are just an otterly bunch, you and I, my dear friend. I'll have to wait for the answer to reveal someday, even if I don't know it by now." I replied as I give him some pets, by which, I absorbed all of it.

Shortly afterwards, I felt a sudden change in my body as it was slowly but surely getting back to normal. After I turned back to my old self, I looked at Slick as he too looked at me, seeing the same outcome.

"Looks like it's something we will figure this out together as a team," I went as he agreed with me by his adorable coos. We have always been a team since we first met so everything will be alright. I just know it.
